- Facebook's Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg delivered the keynote at Barnard College's 119th Commencement ceremony. Addressing approximately 600 members of Barnard's Class of 2011, Sandberg implored the young women to "never let your fear overwhelm your desire. Let the obstacles in your path be external not internal. Fortune does favor the bold and you'll never know what you're capable of if you don't try."
Sandberg also received the Barnard Medal of Distinction, the College's highest honor, alongside: Sylvia Rhone, President of Universal Motown Records; Roberta Guaspari, renowned advocate for music education in public schools; and artist Jenny Holzer, celebrated for contributions to the American conceptual art movement.

This is for all women and girls out there, aim high and lean in.
Everything she says is so sincere and true. I've read her book, and though I'm only in high school, I see that everything she says applies even in the classroom. Women and girls need to believe more strongly in themselves, and thinking that you're awesome is one of the best ways to do so. It's all about attitude, and Sheryl Sandberg is absolutely correct. It's inspiring to hear her, and so meaningful to Barnard's girls that she was able to speak.

A well done inspirational keynote address. The stats are accurate and I truly hope that the young ladies from this graduating class and those to come from schools across the world will reflect on Sheryl's words and "take action" to meet her challenges...the future for all will be far brighter if they can take her advice, "Don't Lean Back.....Lean In"

Sheryl confidently shows her vulnerable, naturally feminine side, and is authentic and powerful. Our energy is different: Women are collaborators, men are competitors. She leads with ALL her strengths. "It is the ultimate luxury to combine passion and contribution...a clear path to happiness." We can be leaders in whatever we choose to be: lead a company, work in a job that fulfills us, or raise your family. The key is to make it our choice, and to "Lean in to your success." Live your joy.
@ewingful Equality doesn't mean we all do the same thing - it means we all have the equal opportunity to pursue a life that is right for us as individuals. I also have different roles than my husband, but they are defined by who we are as people, not by our genders.

Love this! She's awesome and inspiring. I love her point that women make small decisions along the way to put their career second. Of course, we should each follow our hearts, but Sandberg points out that we are making choices early on, before we even realize it, to marginalize ourselves and let our work take a backseat.

Does anyone have a link to these studies that “show that as men get more successful and powerful, both men and women like them better,” but the reverse is true for women? I’m just curious; might be able to use them for a research paper, but obviously not without attribution.

@leiferiksson - My argument still stands. The biological motivation to breed that evolutionary psychologists attribute to all human behavior falls short. The larger number of female college grads vs male alone suggests that young women are biologically motivated to compete and succeed. Sandberg is simply helping women know how to keep that natural motivation when the responsibilities of children and family crowd it out.
@leiferiksson - Currently, only 2.4% of US CEOs are women. In Europe, women account for 11.7% of board of directors. Norway, which has some of the most family friendly policies in Europe, has women in 38% of those positions. Notice the trend? As more businesses realize the importance of adopting family friendly policies to keep female talent, the numbers will change.
BTW, if your college experience involved mostly rote memorization and conformity, then you did not get much of an education.
What would I do if I weren't afraid?
I am inspired in a sense, but there is no such thing as equality in the world of men and women. Women and Men have different goals...as they should. God has made us with awesome differences that at the end of the day, It balances the world, The home, and the business world. A women can be as good as a business person as a man. But we are wired differently ..It is what it is! I am a business woman and I have different roles as my husband. I am thankful for that.
Great Vision! How to we make it come true? How about a couple of practical measures?
1. Let our daughters know that cheerleaders don't make leaders. Encourage them to PLAY sports.
2. Ask our corporations to have Family Support department to free up employees from mundane tasks. Would Facebook lead the way?

@leiferiksson - The point is not for one sex to dominate over the other. That's exactly the type of thinking we're trying to move away from. The restaurant business requires grueling hours to get ahead. Its much easier to balance those hours if you have someone else taking care of the kids, as most male chefs do. Chess? Who cares about chess.
If Sheryl is the future of womanhood we are ALL in trouble.

her gestures are so over-exaggerated they appear disingenuous and it honestly makes it hard appreciate whatever message it is that she's trying to convey...

I could mention accounting, which is now over 60% female vs. wall street, which is dramatically male dominated, and then mention that accounting firms have drastically more family friendly policies than wall street does. Yes, women are making inroads. But, even if no field was currently dominated by women, it would not prove that women cannot compete, especially when women have only recently been allowed to compete in the first place. Your demand for an example does not prove your argument.
I'm a girl and a woman and it gives me chills to listen to her overly rehearsed words and tones. She's flaunting her accomplishments in the corporate world and projecting it on all the women. What if climbing the ranks is just not women's thing? What if it takes too much of a toll to "lead" and you really can't have it all? Men and women are biologically different and everything else comes with it. Her shoving all of that into young women's face is a relentless exhibition of narcissism

Great speech about equality for women. But.... there was hardly a black graduate in the crowd. We need to focus on that too. I strongly disagree with Sheryl's statement that the majority of housework/childcare FALLS to women. I believe that many women take it upon THEMSELVES. Far too many women go into relationships with men assuming that they (the women) will have to do everything, and this becomes self-fulfillling. Expect (not demand) more from men in this vein, and so it will be!
the fact that you're giving the word "feminist" a negative connotation certainly says something about you. and don't for one second think that you know how women think/feel or how they should think/feel. also, she reports studies in this speech; she doesn't simply conjure up her statements from thin air. it was probably unsettling for you to hear the truth for once, but that's not her fault. i don't know any man who has a problem with this speech, so maybe you should reevaluate your outlook.

Evil patriarchy? Are you 19? We're talking about concrete things here. Natural selection theories do not adequately describe real life. Not all behavior can be attributed to the reproductive drive. You'll find more women in position of power in countries that have more family friendly policies. Board members are appointed but must have professional success to merit appointment. Norway also has more female CEOS btw. Women were only given the chance to compete in the last 100 years.Patience.
