Sundberg's speech is such a push for women to fight for themselves, to stand for their own rights and to own their own success. She is such a motivation not only for adults but also for young girls to establish song feauteres to fight for the equality, to be able to achieve high peaks, not looking at unfairness of some people and companies. She recommends 3 basic things for women to do.
    1. "Sit at the table"
    2. "Make your partner a real partner"
    3. "Don't leave before you leave"
She explains all of the above-mentioned steps and encourages everyone, especially females, to try to follow these steps.

I am laughing at all the negative comments. This talk was perfect, it did not blame men, it did not blame the business structure. It looked at the true cause, we are raising our women to be subservient. She didn't say that physically men and women are the same, she just asked women to stand up for themselves.

She made fair points; I don't disagree with what she said.
However, what was UNsaid was one of the key reasons there are mostly men in high-level positions...
is they're prepared to utterly devote themselves to the job and grind out 100 hour weeks at the expense of all else.
Now here's the thing to understand:
While VERY few women are prepared to do that, not many men are either.
      Reasonably so.
But of the people that ARE prepared to put in that kind of insane commitment,
      they are almost entirely MEN.

Have you heard the tale of the famous myth of the Amazonians? Long story short there were a feminist tribe who treated men as if they were demons. Also since they had to have kids to pertain their satanic tribe, they raped innocent men ( I know that is hard for feminists to believe, but history does not lie) and did not let the men ever see their children again. Now if it was a boy the woman would sometimes let the father keep his son, but never a daughter. And you are accusing men of being evil?

That is incorrect, men are drawn to smart and successful women. There is no negative perception of successful women in guys corner . All the judging that is done towards both men and women is generally done by other women. Women judge other women about everything, how they dress, where they work, how much they work, how clean their house is, what clothes they wear, if the purse matches the shoes , how they raise their children etc. This list can go on, they meet together in little group and they start gossiping and judging other women. Men do not do that, men 80% of the time do not talk about women, and in the 20% of the time they do, they talk about women in admiration like, how pretty this girl is . She mad a very good food etc.

I don't mean to sound sexist, but in my opinion the reason there are more men then women in leadership role is due to (1) emotional management (a) as boys, since a young age, we been told stuff such as boys don't cry. While girls on the other hand people are more tolerating towards it. Despite been able to express one's emotion can be better for personal health, in the long run, by 14~15 boys in general increasingly become better at emotional management compare to girls (b) Boys don't need to deal with the mood swings associate with PMS. As harsh as it sound, emotional management is important in higher positions, there are time, when its alright to be emotional, but other time, letting emotion cloud our judgement can have horrible effect. Been overly emotional, when you cannot be emotional can have horrible effect, especially while in leadership role. Even take a look at culture. The Chinese once talked about pre age of enlightenment Europe and post Age of Enlightenment Europe, one thing they say is, if you look at European text since the fall of Rome and before the Age of Enlightenment, all their artwork and poetry is about romance, while after the age of enlightenment it is all about science. Take a look at South American countries, these countries are very much over indulge in emotions of romance, and they are poor, western Europe tend to be more in favor of rational thinking and they do well, even romantic countries such as France, people are only romantic during their off time. When its time to be professional, not so romantic. Asia been the most powerful region for most of the last 2000 years, despite it suck for a while, it quickly climb back up after the 1950s, and Asians are the less romantic people in the world, In all of China history only one classical novel is romance, while with Europe, a lot of classic is heavily influence by romance. The same boys don't cry principle, in Asia to a certain extend it was even been apply to girls, where some parents make their little girls sit in the naughty corner for crying, in the west, when their little girls are crying it is all hugs and kisses, if the dad is a bit of a thug, he probably go try bash people up. If Asian parents are that harsh with their daughters while crying, you can image with boys, I remember when I was a little boy, I use to get slap for crying. (2) women are more likely to leave the workforce to take care of children, it is human nature, all men wants to be an alpha and all women wants to be with an alpha. It is an evolution instinct, due to alpha male are better providers. As a result, even with the speech of, it is alright for the wife to work and husband stay at home with the kids, most couple are reluctant to do it, even when it is the logical choice, most of the time when it happen it is due to e.g. the husband is a working class guy that had a major injury at work and no longer able to do heavy lifting and now can barely make minimum wage. The wife is a college graduate that can get a decent office job, so, now, it only make sense for the husband to stay home with the kids, while the wife work. Those are very rare situations. As a result, with more husband working and wife stay home with the kids, the result is nature, more likely men get into leadership role, due to more women give up on their career.

True feminism is about equality. It's about making people equal, and since women aren't equal we fight for the right - but a real feminist doesn't want to take away rights, they just want women brought up to the same level as men. So, her speaking on an agenda that makes humans equal and self-confident is 100% what true feminist agendas are, it's the newbies and the femi-nazis who gives our movement a bad name.

I agree, feminism needs to stop demonising men for being born, we're bored with it now and women are complaining that we are leaving them alone as demanded by feminists for the last 50 years.
      which is it you want?
oops, no one is listening anymore, the blame, shame, vilify game is completely self defeating, and yet it's up to those whom have been vilified to do something about the intersex relations feminism destroyed?
I thought you were supposed to be so independent, what happened?
telling men to 'step up' is ridiculous, we didn't break it, we don't have to fix it, in any case, we no longer have the time nor patience to pander to women's demands and pouty fecetious whims, in case you hadn't noticed : life does not give free rides.
men have allways been aware of this, now it's your turn to learn the hard way.
feminism is a quasi-religion of misandry : sexism is sexism how ever one wishes to colour it.
I don't interact with sexists, male or female, bigotry of any kind disgusts me.

No, it is not women's problem. She is not a slave to work, to take of the house, and of the children. It is also the husband's responsibility and duty to do housework and take care of the children. A marriage is a union and the husband should do his part to make that union work. The woman is not his servant, but his life partner; a child is not a toy, but a living being that has needs; a house doesn't clean itself. I'd say this is all men need to consider seriously before thinking of marriage.

This is a very eye-opening Ted Talk! I was very intrigued by the part about women systematically underestimating their abilities. As well as the women workforce tends to refrain from negotiating for themselves. Lastly, attribute their success to external factors as opposed to themselves which oftentimes causes major issues in the workforce for our women. I think we as a society have to encourage and instill more confidence in our women. Whether it be women boosting women up or men boosting women. The work from you (Sheryl Sandberg) is what we need more of to break these characteristic patterns practiced and that have been instilled into women.

The same goes for women composers in the film industry. I do notice how my male peers tend to be more assertive and certain of their abilities whereas women tend to question their talents and abilities and run more insecurity. The number of derogatory comments on this video towards this talk and women in general is disgusting. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a woman standing up for herself, asserting herself, being confident, and dominating. I feel like many people deride feminists because they think we're trying to say that women are superior to men, and that's not true; we're just asking for equality. There exist these female stereotypes of women being innately demure, domestic, weak, and not competent in fields that are supposedly "masculine" (such as STEM fields, business, etc.), that have proliferated in our society for so long which many people ignore or simply accept to be natural, and that needs to change. Some of you might say that women who fit those stereotypes do exist, and I agree, but I also think that there is a large percentage of women who are molded to be that way simply because that's the place our society locks them into. The fact that all these negative comments below exist only goes to show how ignorant our society is today. I'm ashamed of you all.

Women need to own their own success, stop waiting for a man to provide, but be a co-provider as a partners. Men and women can work as a team. The problem with our culture as obviously stated is that majority of young girls who become women do not think highly of themselves, or pursue ambitious roles because they have been relegated to the background so much that they do not feel welcome in challenging areas filled with men.

But what women don't realize is that being a CEO *is extremely stressful.* It's not fun and games and play time and you are held *accountable* and accountability is something women run screaming from.. women want a dictatorship and that's what they think a CEO is .. held accountable by the shareholders and the board and can be thrown out in a heartbeat.
Nor is being a CIO, COO, CFO, director, etc. fun. So the reason only 2% of women are CEOs, 6% CFOs, COOs, etc., is because when they actually DO get into those positions they quickly quit or get fired. 'I' wouldn't want to be CEO! No freaking way! All that pressure?
And this women Sheryl whatever (like it matters) isn't a CEO, she's COO and sure enough, I read she barely even comes in to work like so many women. I believe what all girls and women need to understand is that this is a male dominated world and we need to start creating big goals for ourselves. Yes people don't expect us to earn a lot of money, looking pretty is enough but it isn't and shouldn't be enough for us. I think women have way more potential than the world taught us and only through self examination, self-awareness, self-love, reading, educating, getting fit, becoming strong by learing mma or boxing or knowing some important tricks to protect ourselves, being alone and smart while taking care of ourselves we will reach our potential.
About having kids I think men and women both should take care of the child. Isn't it so weird the woman takes care of the child most of their life and the child gets surname of their father lol so we should value ourselves and put only that much which our partner will too. Add your surname to the child too because it's your baby and never ever ignore insults. When anyone threatens you, become strong and show them your power. Best of luck to all the women in the world, may you realize your true potential and never settle for less.

Unfortunately, for some reason, women tend to undermine themselves for absolutely no reason at all (hypersensitivity to superficial messages in the media!) If you want credit for what you do- man or woman- you need to OWN it and act like you belong, no matter what you're doing or where you are. Why should someone give you the trophy if you don't claim it?

I'm sorry you were stuck in an unprofessional environment. Doesn't seem like you were in the caliber of work environment to be able to meet talented people, which makes perfect sense from the impression your comment gives about your lack of character.
From my experience, I have met women and men alike who have been exceptional leaders because of their people skills- empathy, humility, thick skin, and ability to ask the right questions in the right situation. I just happened to notice that women usually put more effort and energy into really understanding who they're working with on a personal and emotional level, a method of relationship building necessary in business and in solving complex, people- oriented problems. Business runs on people who understand people- you obviously do not.

_I'm sorry you were stuck in an unprofessional environment. Doesn't seem like you were in the caliber of work environment to be able to meet talented people, which makes perfect sense from the impression your comment gives about your lack of character_
Lol 'An unprofessional environment,' like I've only had one job. I've worked for over 20 different companies over the last 25 years and currently I work in corporate sales for a company I've been with for 8 years and all the people I speak to everyday are in other companies, _hundreds_ of them in every industry there is.
I meet more people in a week than you do in 6 months. You have _no_ idea what you're even talking about at all. And all of these people are CFOs, CEOs, COOs, CIOs, IT Directors, VPs, the best and the brightest and there are very, very few women in any of those positions. Only 4% of CEOs are women, only 6% of CFOs, 3% of COOs, etc. www.investopedia.com/articles/financialcareers/09/top-female-ceos.asp
Not because of 'oppression' or 'sexism,' but because those positions require huge amounts of responsibility that women run screaming from as well as stock holders holding them accountable and women are incapable of human accountability and don't even know what character is, demand respect instead of earning it like a man. They only want to work part time, never start their own companies, are extremely flaky and unreliable and are petty and bizarre. They fire themselves with their extreme incompetence and extremely immature, infantile behavior, I've seen it a dozen times.
Putting anyone, a female or minority in a position like that is just stupid because you are only setting them up for failure because you're not putting them in that position because of qualifications, but because of their gender or race.
_From my experience, I have met women and men alike who have been exceptional leaders because of their people skills- empathy, humility, thick skin, and ability to ask the right questions in the right situation. I just happened to notice that women usually put more effort and energy into really understanding who they're working with on a personal and emotional level, a method of relationship building necessary in business and in solving complex, people- oriented problems. Business runs on people who understand people- you obviously do not_
What a pile of steaming empty buzz words and catch phrases that are completely meaningless. I doubt you've ever even had a job and just read too many feminist articles in women's magazines or on Jezebel. And you're way behind the times, even _women themselves hate working for other women._ There have been numerous studies done about this:
*Women Prefer Male Bosses Even More Than Men Do:*
      www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2014-10-16/women-dislike-having-female-bosses-more-than-men-do
_To "And women just need to give up" You are either a man who has no mother, a man without a penis, or someone with no love in their life_
*84% of women today in the U.S. want to be housewives:*
      www.forbes.com/sites/meghancasserly/2012/09/12/is-opting-out-the-new-american-dream-for-working-women/#7a51e3aa3095
So let me get this straight, because most women today clearly state that they want to go back to the kitchen and have given up on Feminism that means I have no penis, love no one and do not have a mother according to your 'logic' - and you _wonder why people don't take women seriously and why women fail consistently in business._ You're idiots.
Oh and btw, Cheryl Sandberg's position at Facebook is 'COO.' The COO is tasked with the day-to-day administration and operation of a business and I can guarantee you that she isn't doing her job there and someone else is having to yet she still gets paid.
How do I know? Because all she does is travel and give these incredibly stupid, cringy speeches to pathetic and delusional women like you. Men having to do all of the female employees' work for them because the women are always out, too slow and too stupid. Sounds like just another day! Women in the workplace are a joke.

I learned something important recently from a staffing organization, men are more likely to still apply for a job not meeting 100% of the qualifications listed (and still get it because they bothered to apply) but women won't. We feel we shouldn't apply for a job because even though we have the degree and three years experience, it says four, so we skip past it. We don't even try because we think we'd be looked over anyway or it would be wrong to "not follow the rules." Men still apply. We need to be more self-assured, like men, because I did that just now, I applied one term short of my B.S. and I got the job AND they're working with my last term of school in the fall. I asked the hiring manager why, he said I have the experience and talent, and I asked why then ask for the list of qualifications and he said, "It weeds out those who don't feel confident in their ability because a confident person applies anyway." I was blown away.

There is also this mentality of, "A rich guy will take care of me." Which could be true. (In some cultures perhaps that is the prayer due to lack of privileged opportunities available to girls/women.) But I would rather bet on myself getting rich than on someone else providing for me. Also, when you're financially independent, you can make better negotiations in your relationships due to the maturity and leadership skills that you developed as you built your financial freedom. In whatever job that you do (in the corporate world, as a mother, as a daughter, etc.), be your best and become an improved version of yourself every year. You don't need to be in a corporate setting to have a fulfilling life's journey. But if that is your dream, you must make strategic decisions to help you fulfill that dream or else you won't be ready for the challenges that will come your way. Without such preparation, you cannot weather for storms of the demanding corporate world, family or self-care. And always keep a question in mind, "What if no superhero will come and save me?"

The 2 nations which have had empires over the last 100 years, Britain’s is dead and America’s is still going, have propelled 4 women to the very top of Government or as close as possible. Thatcher, May, Hillary and Kamala Harris, not a single 1 of these changed (or in Harris’ case, appear to want to change) the institutions for the better.
Maggie brought in neoliberal capitalism to the U.K., which we still feel the effects of. May was responsible for the hostile environment when she was head of the Home Office, Hillary has admitted to creating terror groups in Afghanistan in the 80’s and Harris has said the Dems won’t ban fracking.

What an important conversation. Thank you #SherylSandberg for the critical role you play in it. As a woman who has been in leadership at various nonprofit organizations and also a mother of three (now) adult children, I know the heartache of the crying child on the leg and the “guilt” that is apparently simultaneously birthed with the first child. I attended an all women’s college-which I now understand helped me to embrace the concept that my voice matters and that I do belong at the table. I was blessed to marry a man that shared both parenting and home responsibilities (50/50) and I agree 100% that the benefits of this type of approach to marriage are AMAZING even after 28 years! I have always loved encouraging young women to live out their purpose and calling and to lead fiercely. I have sometimes intentionally and others times without knowing it served as a mentor to younger women. Sadly, I have worked with very few women in leadership who appreciate and support strength in other women in the workforce. I’m reminded of the dove commercials that highlight the ways we value certain attributes/qualities in men and hold the very same attributes/qualities against women. I hope we continue this conversation so that the changes begin with us and ripple out into our spheres of influence. My three adult kids will tell you that although mommy has always loved her work-she always loved them more...They are doing great by the way, and we all still treasure the limited time we get to enjoy together.

I ran into 1 woman leader my entire military career. She was my senior, a bit overweight, but had a smile sexier than Janet Jackson and an even sexier character. She knew "the books" inside and out, and welcomed all challengers. It didn't define her. She kept the office running like a Swiss watch and I spent time prepping her for her wedding. I wish I did not loose contact with her; it was a big mistake. That kind of character was as unblemished as a white crayon in a full box of colors.

I do also think, however, that this step she has taken is short of a stride. She has ignored a lot of social inequalities in endorsing this ineffective "trickle-down feminism". I feel as if her brand of feminism is of any use to the elite. So what I am saying here is that, her success is incredibly praiseworthy, but these speech has basically reduced feminist principles to that of a "self help" book.

But what I will say is that they are at the very least linked via both racism and sexism being forms of prejudice, in the same way apples and bananas are linked via both being fruits. They're not quite the same thing, and bananas are not derived from apples, but they share an indisputable link. Personally, I find that whenever I have encountered racism, I have usually encounter sexism too. That's a personal matter though and shouldn't be applied to everyone. My point was that overcoming all prejudice, such as racism and sexism, will lead to an equal society.

What a lot of people don't realize is that women and men are inherently different. Men and Women aren't just different physically, but psychologically as well. For example, women tend to obsess over people whereas men tend to obbsess over things. (There are outliers.) Women tend to choose jobs that have a focus around relationships, whereas men tend to focus on jobs where they can focus on a task. This is backed by studies on humans as well as primates. That's just how we're hardwired.
The arguements presented by the speaker don't appeal to female vs male biology. I understand the points she's making, but without sufficient knowledge on why these things happens, how can one pose a solution? I personally see this arguement as lacking sources and background knowledge.
When the speaker mentioned that all the men had their hands raised for the duration of the questioning period and the women didn't, I thought that had more to do with biological impulses rather than anything else.
She brings up solid points, I just wish they were backed by something other than feelings. Sure, it sucks to not have your questions answered as a woman, but women and men just have different struggles. I bet that many men struggle in areas where women thrive. Women's and men's successes cannot be compared, so why are we looking at a man's version of success and applying that to women? Why can't women be successful in ways men aren't (and vice versa)? We're completely different creatures, and that needs to be acknowledged within discussions like these.

Well GM has two female leaders at the C- suite running the company. I think the only company in the automotive sector. Barra and Suryadevhara , CEO and CFO respectively have really changed the course of women working in top tier challenging sectors. This will indeed be an inspiration for many.

A well-established man-hater telling you to blame men for all that ails the world and that women are eternally oppressed is not sound advice. Hoping your mind has expanded beyond this closed realm.

We definitely need more women in leadership! This is an amazing talk! And one needs to choose how they consume the information.

I am a mother, a "successful" career woman. To be honest, I do not feel like to have a C-level job ( I had C-level jobs for years though)if I do not have to, I will be more comfortable if I focus on family and do some other job I enjoy, will not cause conflicts with my nature often as a woman, a mother and a wife. I like to be a writer, a consultant, a teacher, etc. some roles that provide me flexible time and space to keep a balance between my life and work, and still can influence other people in a positive manner from my observation and experience as a woman, different from a man. I believe this is a natural way to respect the bio-difference between a woman and a man, we have different expertise, and it is important to take care of our family. Mothers play a crucial role for children at home. If a mother is too busy at work to spend quality time with their children, it may become the root cause of insecurity inside of their children later on. I am happy that I spend time with my son and left my business for a while, I am comfortable if I do not have to make hard decisions at work as a "boss", I am delighted to be a freelance and enjoy the harmony both at work and family-peace of mind.

Some people say it's important to talk about this stuff, they say you can't fix something unless you acknowledge it's a problem. In many ways, I actually think talking about and always hearing how big of a problem it is that women are not in leadership actually makes it worse for women. Constantly hearing how the odds are stacked against you if you are a woman, black, or whatever creates an unnecessary mental hurdle.
Imagine if an athlete training for a fight had to hear throughout their training camp that they have a 70% chance of losing. They hear it from their coaches while they train then they go home and hear it in the media. Obviously, this would be a huge disadvantage. So why would we teach in school that women make 70 cent's on the dollar compared to men or tell them they are less likely to end up in leadership? I'd have to think this only holds them back. If I was a woman I wouldn't even entertain these narratives for a second.

Great point. Complaining about anything just creates more to complain about, no matter how sophisticated and intelligent it sounds.

Why is she blaming it on men, it's the women's fault for not wanting to be that profession, different genders have different tastes, accept it.

Right.... I agree that "genders" have different tastes, because gender is socialized. Biology is not...

Casey Swanson And even before we're socialized we tend to be interested in things people think that gender will be interested. Baby boys are more interested in toy trucks than dolls. There's nothing wrong with that and people like Sheryl who think that are terrible for it.
