Sometimes I’ll do this when grilling Tri Tip. The only problem is it takes 2 chimneys full of chunks and a long time to burn down to get rid of the rancid smoke.
Yes, most because of the cost. Bag of lump can cost less than a bag of wood chunks where I live. But when I have wood chunks I use those to start my smokers.
I just used them to start my fire. I was smoking a brisket and added logs after that. But I do now add some to the bottom of my fire stater for the bottom charcoal and it works great.
I do this quite often, its a good way to use the leftover chunks that i have after sizing my splits for my smoker. I pile a bunch of chunks in my weber and start it with a full chimney of prelit chunks then let it burn down to the point where im able to start cooking.
@BigDawgFi215 True, but I did not have any charcoal, and that's why I tried it. However, it did light fast, then most of the lump coal that I have used.
@robinjohnson2749 if you mean coal from the ground, then I would cook with open flame with it. Now, if you mean charcoal made from trees, then go for it.
I’m ashamed to admit that I discovered bbq chimneys at my 35 years…so many years missing with this great invention
I discovered at 31 😂 a few days ago
Simple genius! Thanks for sharing
@@cardinalpoints2839 No problem.

So did you ever try grilling or smoking with the wood chunks? If so, how did it turn out?

You just made lump charcoal , they sell it already cooked so it can light automatically and won’t give off all that extra smoke

WOULD COAL DUST BE SAFE TO EAT
