She does not only pay respect to it, but she is more knowledgeable than most Andalusians with respect to flamenco. She is much closer to flamenco than most Andalusians, and they should shut up. Just because you are born in a place doesn't mean that you know or respect the traditions of that place and sometimes people from outside are much better at it than locals.
I'm an American who has been dancing flamenco since I was a kid, and I've also done some flamenco singing. I can tell you that flamenco singers use the Andalusian accent when singing regardless of where they come from, it's just the right accent for the music and in fact if you don't the words won't fit into the compas correctly, there will be too many syllables (for example lao instead of lado). I think Rosalia is amazing and I think she should use whatever accent she wants to.

Im from Spain and of course she sings with Andalusian accent. Flamenco sounds so weird without andalusian accent, so if she wants to sign Flamenco is better that she uses andalusian accent. Whether that is cultural appropiation or not. Rosalia has been studying flamenco for so many years with andalusian and gypsy teachers in Barcelona and she is an expert now. Rosalía is a "txarnega", which is the term we refeer to catalan inhabitants being descendent from people from other parts of Spain, mainly Andalucia. That explains both her neutral speaking accent and the fact that her singing flamenco and using Andalusian accents are not, in my opinion, cultural apropiations; it is cultural heritage. Me being a "txarnego" myself I can assure you Andalusian culture in Catalonia is quite an important one.
Her mother is Catalan and her father is from Asturias, so she doesn't have any Andalusian heritage, but all Spaniards are in contact with Andalusian music. Flamenco-pop is on the radio all the time.

Incidentally, a lot of British Invasion bands that came to the USA in the 60's adopted a sort of nondescript Kentucky/Tennessee accent in their music. Kind of interesting. Nice upload.
I mean is an British person doing an American accent cultural appropriation? I don't feel like accents can be considered cultural appropriation because 1) you're accent can change without you noticing it or controlling it 2) accents change when in certain social groups and if she is living in the US it is definitely possible she adapting to latin American accent. 3) In most languages you need to change you're pronunciation so that the people who speak with can understand, so someone learning French might feel they need to talk with a stereotypical french accent just so they can correctly pronounce the words so others understand. There's definitely cultural appropriation when it comes to art styles and cultural rituals, and this should be addressed but accents are so tricky since the can change so quickly or blend with other accents

I'm confused about whether I'm considering her controversy to be as controversial. Obviously I don't know why she modified her accent but if she spends time with people who actually use Latin American varieties of Spanish she could subconsciously adapt to it. Every person is different and absorbs language differently. Also I have a side question - do you think it's okay or necessary to adopt a foreign accent while learning a foreign language?
adopting a foreign accent is necessary to properly speak and not sound choppy, i know people who are white americans and speak better spanish than me because not only do they have a larger vocabulary due to constant studying and years of experience but they adopted an accent to where they don't even sound foreign to most other Mexicans. I naturally don't have an accent since I am Mexican and grew up with my fam but speaking with a Mexican accent and actually trying to learn is different from when Americans make a racist joke and mock an accent.

You have to look at the whole picture, how is the personality of the person doing it (in this case she is kind hearted and is known for playing with language a lot in her music), so i wouldn't perceive it as being done with bad in intention. Also, being spanish her second language (she speaks catalan with her family) her spanish accent probably gets more easily modified by others when she is immersed in an ambient with american dialects of spanish.

My only problem here is that you are complaining about no understanding my accent and kind of making fun of it and talking in a sort of derogatory manner towards the accent. And then you turn around and say that you love catala, which is not an accent but a different language all together. And that you could learn it in 3 weeks? I see a bias here. For everyone else that is not rude and disinterested in the southern Spanish accent, there is a few theories as to why our accent is like this. My favourite is that the pronunciation came from the arabic heritage that we have in the south, when Andalusia was Al-andalus.
I am from Andalusia and I can tell you that there isn´t an Andalusian accent, there are different accents, even inside the same provinces, you can find people with different accents, for example in Málaga coastal areas people speak a lot with "z" sound but if you go 50 kms far from there people speak with "s" sound. I don´t know if you as a foreigner can distinguish the different accents inside Andalusia, but we notice them man! it is not the same a person from Cádiz than a person from Jaén, they speak differently in accent and intonation even using different vocabulary. And talking about Rosalía, I would say that she mixes Catalan and Calé way of pronunciation ( the language of the gypsy people) when she sings, not the "Andalusian " accent as you say ... Regards!!

You probably don't know that Venezuelan had a lot of Spanish immigrants during the 1930's the most immigrants in Venezuela were Spanish, predominantly Canary Islanders and from Galicia. We are influenced by the way they speak even some common words that are used in Canary island are still used today.
There s no spanish catalan accent, catalans speak neutral european spanish or spanish with catalan accent like an english speaker would speak spanish with an english accent. That being said catalonia is home for many inmigrants from all around Spain and some of them kept their family accent when speaking spanish.

I think she’s and artist and she can do and speak Spanish or any language she likes. We are all influenced by so many experiences that we’ve had including immediate and extended family. We shouldn’t put people in a box. If she didn’t explore different cultures and sounds her music would sound very different. To me it’s like an opera singer not singing in Italian because they are not Italian. She singing based on what the music calls for.

There s no spanish catalan accent, catalans speak neutral european spanish or spanish with catalan accent like an english speaker would speak spanish with an english accent. That being said catalonia is home for many inmigrants from all around Spain and some of them kept their family accent when speaking spanish.
Pues eso justo que has dicho es remarcar más algunos sonidos como la d al final de palabra se hace como una t y las consonantes son más así que suenan más neutras. Pero solo cuando la gente tiene un acento muy marcado. Cualquier catalán puede forzar el acento en castellano para que se note pero si no queremos no.
I think she’s and artist and she can do and speak Spanish or any language she likes. We are all influenced by so many experiences that we’ve had including immediate and extended family. We shouldn’t put people in a box. If she didn’t explore different cultures and sounds her music would sound very different. To me it’s like an opera singer not singing in Italian because they are not Italian. She singing based on what the music calls for.
