- Anyone familiar with either the vintage Grand Prix scene, or with some of the older Gran Turismo titles will of course know all about the stunning era of streamliner racing, and one of the best known names in that scene was of course Auto Union, or as we know them today - Audi. The Type 52 was a proposed top tier exotic intended for the road and born from those 16 cylinder GP monsters, and had it not been for WWII, it would have doubtless been one of the fastest cars in the world in its time...
Now in 2024 though, we can finally see this vision come to fruition thanks to builders Crosthwaite & Gardener, who were commissioned by Audi themselves to finally build this aerodynamic beast using its original sketches and blueprints, albeit with a longer wheelbase, higher weight - and a whole lot more horsepower from its 6.0 litre supercharged 16 cylinder engine. What a monster...

Projects like this are extremely important in my opinion, cuz it's preserving automotive history, and I'm so happy to see Audi's effort in trying to rescue or replicate the lost Auto Union cars (some of them were destroyed in accidents and the others were captured by the Soviets during the split of Germany after the end of WWII), because one thing that makes my heart hurt is seeing historic cars and tracks being lost forever (which btw would be a cool video to do), like Reims Geux, Aerautrodomo di Roma, the Lotus Mark I, the original Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, among many other important pieces of history gone forever or for indeterminate time.
@leomux2004 . Jobs, just imagine how many unemployed people, worldwide, would be happily employed in the supply and craft chain for this car and other "classics" that are digital-free, therefore much less complicated to make. Imagine.
Some of the old Silverware Arrows cars were scrapped for their metals to feed the war efforts.
Silver Arrows, stupid autocorrect.
@@trappenweisseguy27 Didn't knew about that, that's interesting... and sad as well...😔
@leomux2004, the practice happened in just about every country. I have heard horror stories about pre war luxury and race cars being scrapped for their metals just in the USA alone.
A hypercar dreamliner of it's era. It's drop dead gorgeous in every angle.
Everything about this car is a superlative.
With that engine layout, the horseshoe grille and the overall silhouette, this car is what Bugatti Veyron/Chiron would have looked like in the 1930's
this is the kind of stuff i would want to have in my garage if i could. it's classic, it's timeless, it's a monster, and it's amazing.
Beautiful. One can dream of driving this in GT7.
Preferably on the Grand Prix track of Tripolis, Libya !
❤
@@gordonspencer6186 AVUS, Indy, Monza banking!
Probably would cost 20 million LOL But it would be cool anyway...
That looks incredible! Thanks for sharing this!
The similarity to the Bugatti Atlante is striking.Pleased to see that fundamental petrol headness still exists despite that media, governments are trying to ban loving it. Please continue!
Wonderful that this happened. Making history here.
Looks like they took an Auto Union F1 car and designed a passenger car around it. Fantastic effort just the same! Love the interiors of cars from that era. Magnificent!
Sheer astonishing Craftsmanship.
I had no idea that so many incredibly beautiful cars were either built or conceived during the 1930s. It's like a whole new world opening up to me. Thank you for showing it to us.
That is a mobile work of art
I only wish that one day we return to an era like this for cars and I'm alive to see it.
I hate to break this to you, but its literally happening now and has been since the the mid 80s, we have super/hyper cars that are the modern equivalent of this, they just look different because it wouldn't make sense to make cars like strange yet gorgeous cubish teardrop shapes again, as we now have computers to see that its not an efficient shape aerodynamically, and way better materials and manufacturing processes. Be happy you're around for them, you think the same of them as people thought of this car at the time, and you don't realise how special they are, and you won't until they're gone, none of us will, until its too late.
@@Elbowbanditest2003 a lot of cars nowadays aren't low-drag mainly because low drag shapes tend to also be unstable at high speeds. A computer-defined shape is certainly fascinating but there's a very real human element in older cars that's thanks to the technological limitation of its time.
To be honest, after 2012, I think we are finally "too late"
There is an artistic elegance to this era of automotive design that is missing in todays offerings.
Great Audi, you can build a car that never existed, but can't supply spares for one of your cherished and iconic models, the Audi UR Quattro!
Haha sounds about right
Wonderful video, Mike. Great production and narration. Can you imagine what this car would be like in Gran Turismo's GT7 VR mode? The interiors :-) As it is we are getting the 1955 Mercedes Grand Prix car. I can't wait to drive it on the Nurburbring.
Would instantly purchase a modern version of this that had a small 4 cylinder engine. Such a great looking car. The dash is spectacular; love the giant gauges. One of the most lovely machines i have ever seen.
Stunningly beautiful and a true statement of craftsmanship
And it is shod with Blockley tyres! I have a set on my vintage racer, great choice.
OMG, Ferdinand Porsche's GT wet dream is made reality! Damn!
Schönheit auf Rädern! Danke fürs Teilen!
certainly see the Beetle shape going on again in all the VAG products
This is amazing to see, they did a phenomenal job on it and here you are educating me😂 Thanks Mike loved the video❤
Wow-Wee, it's retro sci-fi looking. It has a very cool stance.
Absolutely stunning!

This side view is so beautiful
Cool Video
The centre driver's position was found in early Panhard X77s 1936/37...
Finally ,art deco ! Superior design!!👍❤
I really feel that manufacturers cold shine here if they offered cars from there history books that they couldn't produce due to constraints....or wars or embargo's on fuel times are better and people want to buy uniquely different cars .
I certainly wouldn't complain if I could afford a reproduction Talbot Lago.
You forgot to mention, a little: because it's so streamlined, it must be staggeringly fast flat out. That rear section is so much optimized for high speed.
Just great, and off course Striezel Stuck is aboard.
Cute renders... that's all.
Its a real car shown at Goodwood.
Yes, Audi didn't make that car, but Tatra did. Because of today's situation and the position of the brand, they turn out to be superior. But that's pure marketing. Tatra was then a space satellite for Auto Union. What kind of cars were they... (even the Germans copied them)
Greetings from Serbia✌️
It's not a Tatra inspired car. Tatras were rear engined cars, Auto Unions Grand Prix racecars were mid engined and were inspired by the Rumpler Tropfenwagen.
@@MichaelAMVM Yes, you're right. But I didn't say that, but that Tatra made a serial car, and Auto Union only drew it.
Greetings✌️
Hans Ledwinka designed the car which became the VW. Ferdinand Porsche stole the plans. Look it up.
NOBODY made this car until 2023/24. Nobody knew of this car until 07/1989 when an article was released in "Oldtimer Klassik".
Porsche designed this car as a "Type 52".
Sure it somehow looks like a 1935 Tatra. But one can say Ledwinka influenced Porsche or vice-versa.
I also see some influence from Porsches' earlier work, let's say the NSU prototype for the Volkswagen.
This real "Type 52" is just a testiment of that time.
I applaud Audi for having it built.
imho, his car is just as cool as a Tatra T700 !
🥂
Handling...?🙄
It is hard to imagine that this thing has more horsepower and weighs less than a 992 GTS, with a manual too ❤
Awesome. What fun.

As bucks go, we really have a 12-pointer here.
Amazing car! Put it into production NOW!
Much too late!!! No one coult affort this expencive car.
Reminds me a little of the Adler Rennlimousine
Well done Olly Crosthwaite and probably Eric Neve for the gearbox.
Never seen it like this, and specially in Zwickau from the Horch Museum.
i'm digging the retrofuture airplane look.... How much is an oil change? Tires?
Way cool
The butler did it.😮
I think engines will became something like swiss watches for good money.
First VW Bug I’d buy😂
It would have looked cool if they did the back door in carbon like the R8 trim.
500hp on bicycle tyres. Racing, the only sport which needs two balls.
Looks like a cross between a Tatra and a Bugatti.
It looks like a Veyron if built in the 30s
es el abuelo del Audi Avus.
And yes, it has the wheel in the middle. It is a dream of mine.
Corrr! Just CORRRR!!!!!
More information about the original design you can find in the book 'PORCHE', written by Karl Ludwigsen.
The backdoor were for storing wheels and spare parts indeed, although the Porsche also considered a model with two seats in the back.
Those tires scare me for a car that is supposed to go over 100 mph.
Just crazy. What were they thinking ??
I don't understand why the VW-group bother with the Bugatti name when they could use Auto Union? Bugatti Veyron should havr been named Auto Union AVUS.
(Well, probably because Bugatti is the only name recognizeable for the Gucchi crowd..)
Porsche's Super Beetle
Looks like a Tatra. Which by no means is an insult.
Basically a Tatra on steroids
@@TechTonic420 Like a lorry ran over a 1954 Bentley Continental R from the rear. Its beautiful.
I wish The Joker could have a car of his own.
Audi team; Say less🗿
So all other cars look to this one and feel inadequate.
Looks like a Tatra on steroids
Is it ULEZ compliant?
If it were the actual age it would be exempt 😂
Powerd by Tatra . Schön abgekupfert
Audi Auto Union V16 Type C Streamline -Gran Turismo 4 - you had to get it from the Nissan dealership for some reason
Road legal auto union type c
Well, i found something different compared to the Blueprint. The Muffler was more modernised compared to the Blueprint. And, it had 300 HP more than the proposal. So, What do you think about that
Rear engine and rear wheel drive?
Will they take a trade in 😂
Dang I thought the mclaren f1 is the first 3 seat supercar
Tatra is much better with its T-77 and T87 models, even though it only has an eight-cylinder engine. It has a much more aerodynamic and elegant body
Can you offer it in a VW 1.0 3clynder with plastic components and a CVT so normal people can use the looks?
I never knew Audi was into lead sleds
If you see photos of the Type 22 GP cars (the inspiration for the Type 52) you could say Audi was into FAST lead sleds!
A .I failed to create exact before years human history
They had good reasons not to build this monstrosity back in the thirties.
Would this qualify as steam-punk?
Made by the same people who did the W125 replicas a few years ago. Identical to the originals but without the Mercedes logos.
“296 mph” or kph?
Great video - thank you!
The Rosemeyer crash? I recall it being either 290 mph or 260 mph, insane either way. iirc it lifted and flipped on a section of autobahn
@@HSGAutomotive His official record was 252mph and crashed while attempting to do better.
Just checked on a memory hunch and it was correct: The 290 quote came from GT6, so we can thank PD for that inaccuracy, lol. ''The top speed of the car at the time is said to have been 479 km/h (298 mph)''
When car designs are getting lamer and lamer and more generic this is so refreshing to see. I hope other companies will do something like this.
VERY nice.
Why can't EVs have stylish bodies?! 🤔
Exactly what I always say, there's no reason why a floor battery EV couldn't look like a 1930s woody etc, and people would love them much more. Replace metal with plastic and wood with vinyl etc to keep costs realistic and improve impact safety. Its very doable
@@HSGAutomotive
Also to reduce weight for greater efficiency
Auto Onion. Lol.
the long rear looks great, so vintage. the front looks clumsy, they should have made it a bit more pointed, my opinion. 500HP is to little for 6Liter displacement, it should do like 1300HP with a turbo. the rule of thumb says 450HP per 2L displacment with a turbo.
A few points to remember:
1. The nose of the Type 52 generally copies the nose of the Grand Prix car that inspired it, the Type 22. Of course difference is that the 22 is an open-wheel racecar, whereas the 52 is a road car.
2. The engine. The V16 used in the Type 52 is essentially a road going version of the Type 22's V16 engine. As for the boosting, in the 1930s, when this car was on the drawing board, supercharging is the prevalent way of adding additional power to an engine. Performance brands of the day used superchargers as well (for example, Mercedes-Benz and Bentley). Turbocharging at this time was primitive and experimental. Turbocharging really started to gain ground during WW2, when the demands of high-altitude combat aircraft necessitated accelerated research.
As they appear to have stuck with the contemporary wheel/tyre widths available when the car was designed, it's probably best that it doesn't have 1300HP because it would be a tricky swine to keep between the ditches and shiney side up.
Like 500+ HP are not quick for those fat bicycle tires, drum brakes and camping chairs hehehehe. It is supposed to be and old engine too. Some other videos mentioned some changes in the suspension layout and some other major components. I bet they make the car better and easier to drive than older real era cars, but this is an old design brig back to metal, not a new design. Why this car need 1300 HP?
Audi v16
The McLaren of the time? LOL no. The luxureous Duesenberg SJ, produced between 1929 and 1937, beat this next decade 1930s Auto Union performance by nearly 10%. The Duesenberg SJ's far simpler, therefore more reliable, straight-eight boosted 320 HP thanks to its supercharger, an innovation that Auto Union did not apply, making the Duesenberg SJ go up to 130 mph. While the Auto Union desperately needed all those beautiful aerodynamic curves to reach 120 mph and would have been a straight to private museum car, the Duesenberg reached 130 mph while being practical, its engine maintainable by most shops, obligatory dents fixable by the better local metal worker.
A V16 supercar?
Like the Bugatti Tourbillion.
The car specifically mentioned in the video, yes.
Interesting for sure, but the baby sleeping music on the background has no added value, quite on the contrary, it makes listening difficult.
Aw, poor diddums
McLaren build the same car without a traditional workshop 90years ago
520hp on skinny wheels lol
Rear doors for carrying the drivers nuts around 😆
looks like Tatra on steroids
One last hurrah before we're all forced to drive cars powered by garage door openers.
Yeah, lol. Although I'm happy to see multiple brands working on synthetic fuels, including Hyundai and Porsche, and some marques are recognising the EV dead end coming (I've predicted it'll be the next diesel in that way) like Mercedes walking back their development
Mercedes did a better job with their streamliner , looked so much better !
No safety belts...
No snacks either
TH-cam is like the little girl, with the curl, in the middle of her forehead. For those who don't know this. When she was good she was very very good, but when she was bad she was horrid. I think some old timers like me will know this one. Let me know if you think it applies to TH-cam. This is an example of when TH-cam is very very good.
The driver's position is in the center, so you could take your wife and your mistress out at the same time.
Why do you give all the measurements in non metric bananas? It’s a German car, so it’s metric, not pounds and quarter apples or what ever you’re talking about.
Don't cry, you'll be okay
A fake Tatra as usual
"Very unique" is there any better proof you talk rubbish.
That is horrible
