@@zachariahadams Oh snap! Fixing now.
omg I had bought this marantz 40 to use with my klipsch ref premiere, will sound good? I see you don't recommends with klipsch only b&w etc
@@thiagodelgado3128 No worries Cinema40 sounds fantastic with klipsch!
Andrew, you are giving a sence that you skip calibration because you have some pride calibrating manually. I think that is wrong, and you are way to biased in that regard. You really should try and give Dirac a real chance, and use it for a couple of weeks or even up to a month. I'm sure, when you go back to none calibration mode, you will think, how the heck could you live without! Switching between calibartion modes quickly is not a good way to judge anything.
Dirac Bass Control and ART is coming later this year, and it will accelerate away from your beloved SONY even further. Great review!
I got the 40 because of the remote, features and looks. Sony 7000 looks old remote looks bad. The 40 is just a beautiful piece!! Sounds great with keff r3 meta indigo blue! Just starting my theater setup.
Great video - thanks. I have realised while watching this channel that I enjoy the interactions and dialogue between you and Kristy just as much as the nerdy details about the equipment on test - it's a real testament to the chemistry as partners and a great way to differentiate your channel from myriad AV channels available. Well done!
Really love that you discussed the whole Marantz line-up.
There’s always something about your reviews that is just so satisfying and informative - thanks so much for your effort!!
Glad you like them!
Thanks Eric for your feedback
Thanks for the hint at the very end of the video! Looking forward to that B&W 606 S3 review!! can't wait!!!
I loved the review and I have been waiting for months to hear your non biased review and opinion. But, I am highly disappointed that the Marantz C-40 was not compare to the Denon AVR-X4800H which is in the same class. How much longer do we to wait for you to finally compare these two excellent reciever side by side?
Thank you, bought this receiver and I must admit that the sound quality is so much better then my previous Yamaha 775 receiver with Magnat 1109 speakers as fronts. Stereo music is much more controlled, details in the upper frequencies sound nicer to the ears with more detail. Surround effects with movies are stronger and have a more surround sound then before.
I bought the Cinema 40 and like it very much. I'm still using a power amplifier via pre-out to an Emotiva XPA-200 gen 1 powering a pair of Kef R3 fronts and matching R series center channel. Using LS50s as surround speakers. I have the Kef R3s sitting on top of the SVS SB3000 subs using iso stands. The sub is tuned using Cinema manual setup and tuning. Sounds excellently blended and the optional directional L and R low frequency signals make it a great stereo experience. I'm using 80hz crossover to the subs. I could probably use 60hz crossover but I like SVS sub being more involved in the frequency curve.
I'm so happy with Bose 600 and surrounds thanks to your review. The dialog is crystal clear. Love your videos. I'm someone who owned Mark Levinson and Magneplanars. But recently I went the simple way. Thx!
Hey Andrew great video from you guys, good to hear about home theater receivers and how they perform on various types of uses. This is great to know , especially for an daily driver rig separate from your higher end more elaborate specialized systems
Yep, Audyssey for first setup followed by ear after some break in and updates, as I have an off center great room. I do need the 8015 for the power as I am driving large speakers and mounted heights. The 80db is perfect for 7.2.4 and it runs cooler than my old 7010 did.
I bought the Cinema 50 a few weeks ago - a little nervously as I had been waiting for this review of the Cinema 40 and didn’t want to feel I was missing out. No regrets at all, and I didn’t need to purchase Dirac. It’s only a 5.0 surround system and Audyssey worked wonders.
Thank you...this review TOTALLY reinforces many reviews of Marantz previously sought out...just LOVE the aesthetics, BUT like the sharpness and attack of a Sony or Pioneer (SC-09TX).
Great review. Just got my C40 a week ago, preowned less than 5months for less than $2200. Using it to replace my NR1710. My setup includes pairing it with Mcintosh MA5300, Sonus Faber Lumina III and Lumina Center. Still using my old sub from B&W AS608, and the surrounds and atmos speakers consist of DALI SPEKTOR2 and SS-CSE. I am still only using Audyssey for my setup, however i notice this time round the bass calibration is different from the NR1710, and the results were very positive. Overall bigger soundstage and details when watching my usual streaming stuff like Netflix, Amazon & Plex. My only wish is they can make it not so heavy in the future lol.
I went that rabbit hole . Loved my Marantz AV 7005 . When it was time for repairs it was dated . Unable to get parts I had a big brick .The price of a new precessor is over 3.5k I went back to 2 channes.
Loving my flawless C40
Nice review the both of you I am still using a Pioneer VSA-AX10Ai bought in 2005 in the Netherlands 34 kilos was in that time one of the best it is now already 15 years in South America with Xanadu AW 18 for the same speakers 105cm tall and the same style Center speaker and a Release 205 Subwoofer painted in the same Xanadu red RAL 60 color but has no wifi bluetooth .
But like I heard you saying the Cinema 70 is my next receiver some day the moment I can buy it over here ! Keep doing the great with every review !
As Pauly Fuemana (rest in peace) said: "How Bizarre". I asked the very question about the 70 that was partially the subject of this video! First, thanks for answering my forum question. Second, seeing this review reinforced my decision to take your recommendation on the 70. (However, I ordered the 3 channel Emotiva BasX amp due to the expense of the Xpa series. What a great help you have been to me.) Twice!
I really enjoy your channel
Thanks for another great review. These new marantz look killer in silver.
Currently deciding how much i value having surround sound in the future, aka, deciding between the cinema 70s + amps and the model 40n. Both set ups are appealing.
I love this idea! I have the Marantz Model 30 Integrated and am using an old Outlaw 975 ht processor/pre (putting the M30 into Power Amp mode for home theater only. All other sources go directly to the M30. This seems like the Perfect update to the aging 975 for someone like me who really only needs a 5.1 for HT, but desires a higher standard for audio (analog vinyl etc). I hope they keep this series.
Thanks for the video. I have been saving and I plan to give myself a new sound this Christmas, especially for watching movies at home. I have heard very good reviews of Sony, but when you invest so much money you want the best in quality/price and your comparisons are the best.
Great review and I was happy to hear the positive feedback. I'd be content living with Marantz.
Andrew, your hair is looking sharp. Congrats. That's a road I could see myself going down one day.
Ooooo idea for another video…”Home Theater Lingo” in other words, what do enthusiasts mean by words like “bright, weight, warm, depth, range, full etc.” That could be fun and add to our knowledge a bit…
A bright sound usually means the highs overwhelm the rest of the sound. A warm sound usually means the highs are not as prominent. Weight and full usually means the sound has a lot of punch or force behind it. Depth usually refers to the midrange where the singer and instruments are in their proper space from front to rear. For instance, a forward sounding midrange will make a singer sound closer to you than the recording engineer intended. Imaging refers to a singer and instruments belonging in their proper space from left to right. For instance a singer should sound like they're lright in the middle between the speakers, in a good system, if you concentrate on the singer the left and right speaker will appear like they're not even playing. In a great live recording, you may hear the singer's voice move left or right as they move across the stage.
Range usually refers to the ability to accurately reproduce sound from the lowest lows to the highest highs.
Hope this helps.
@@marvinmurakami8828 that’s a fantastic and helpful explanation! Now help me with my taxes…😄😄😄
@@michael-4k4000 pro calibration uses a machine that is highly sensitive to light and color, coupled with a computer to read the results and help you to calibrate to a baseline.
E.g. what is red? I could show you thousands of variations that you would call "red", but there is a pure baseline 'red' when we talk about calibration. Like music, movie and film are calibrated to a specific color balance, specific white balance. They use calibrated equipment so the baseline is standardized and so when we say that hat should be red, we know specifically what we're referencing
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Warm
@@marvinmurakami8828Thank you! This was excellent !!💖
Thanks for review.
Thanks for the info
Interesting that you prefer the sound without Dirac. I found that a few days listening to my front floorstanders and careful positioning to optimize 2 channel listening, then moving on to the entire multichannel setup and then running correction - it was the cherry on top to reach AUDIO ECSTASY.
Great video as always! One note. A discussion of the reported bugs with the new Sony AVRs (from the 7000 to the an1000) such as reported hiss and loud clunk noises would have been nice. I tried two an1000 because I liked it for the same reasons as in your review but both units suffered from terrible hiss and clunking noise. This is widely reported on forums. I ended up with the x3800h and it has been flawless.
Great review my brother You went back to old school laser display AC3 formats
Great review 👏
Expected a comparison with Denon x4800h and some technical information about audio processing side like DAC ....etc
Andrew, I tried this Marantz and the Anthem at home and kept the Anthem. There is more clarity and easiness of driving speakers from Anthem that made me kept it. Needless to say about Anthem Arc and supplied microphone usb-c calibrated.
Most excellent review. I would like to see this compared the Denon anniversary 110 😊
Just another great review Andrew, well done. Can u please , please, please get your hands on the Denon A1H. I would absolutely love to get your thought on this piece.
Buying the Cinema 40 later this year and I’m looking foreward to use the Dirac
Very good thank you very much very helpful. I’m trying to decide to get what kind of new lamp so thanks.
Can't wait for you to review EMOTIVA BASX MR1 receiver!
yeah, someone had bought that and the cinema 40 and he was downgrading his living room home theater after spending what he called a Porsche Turbo S amount on equipment in his other room for music.
He was very impressed by it but he was also impressed by the Cinema 40 but you're relying on eArc and your consoles need to be plugged into the TV. I think he was disappointed that the MR1 couldn't bi-amp which you'd want to do with a powerful AVR when you have 5 channels to unleash the dynamics of the front speakers (I think he had B&W 702S2 which needed that power like my B&Ws also do). I also spoke to Emotiva about it and they said you wouldn't want to bi amp because they use some high quality components and it delivers 160 watts into 2 channels but clearly they have never heard a B&W bi-amped.
Anything else can go into the AVR since HDMI 2.1 is for 8k and gaming.
Another great video you two. I'm one of the people you referred to, bought the Cinema 50 for Dirac capabilities but have yet to use it since it sounds so good without any correction. No regrets on spending extra for the 50 though, always a Marantz fan. Can't wait for the next review.
Personal reference ,,,, love it
I wrote they would release something in October and they just announced the stereo receiver 70s with 6 hdmi inputs and one out wow. 😂 @ 1000$ is probably not enough but could be good in the bedroom as slim as it is. Will still be waiting for this review, thank you!
Great review! One question:. Apple to apple comparison straight external amps, can I assume 40 and small 70 sound the same? That will save you a lot if you have some multi channel amps around.
So I've watched this review in its entirety and i must say...i love it. I've tried the cinema 40/50 and rxa8a. I love the yamaha but my choice will be the c40. The yamaha voice in movies is the winner but there's something about the c40 that distinguishes itself from the others... albeit small but still to my hearts content.
Lovely review by the both of you and only wished that you guys touch on the independent subwoofer option.
THE review we've been waiting for. Thank you Kristi & Andrew.
Our two channel music only system is complete. Want a video/movie centered receiver with Atmos and have gone back & forth between Sony AZ5000ES & Martantz Cinema 50 for a month.
Choosing the Sony ES to pair with Emotiva XPA-5 to power Monitor Audio Silver speakers and Sony amps to power Atmos ceiling speakers for a 5.2.4 system.
That was as honest & direct a review that I expect from you. Thank you again. 👍
Do you get hiss with spatial audio when they are supposed to be silent?
@@techsamurai11 Sony is on order
I like Dirac used in the XMC-1, but an extra $400 for the Marantz 50 when Integra DRX 5.4 is no extra cost... The Sony ES line has always been a quality buy and I suspect they will release a firmware update for the "hiss" issue with some, but not all owners.
"that lil sumn sumn" THAT'S why I love watching yall!!!!!! LOL
I'm curious how you would stack the Denon X4800H against the Marantz Cinema 50/40. Are you planning on reviewing that model?
I went with the Denon x4800h which is similar to the Cinema 40. I got it for Dirac which was able to bring some depth back to my speakers that I need to have on semi enclosed shelves (compromises). Huge improvement over no eq and Audyssey no matter how much I tweaked it. Sony 7000 interested me but early buyers were finding software bugs though it had a false start where some retailers were selling it before others. So maybe it just wasn't ready yet. Happy with the Denon though!
I wish you would have covered the setup and config of this receiver. With additional settings such as Dialog Enhancement and dedicated 2-channel mode you're leaving a lot on the table regarding the capabilities of this excellent AVR and I would have liked to see how some of those options compared to the Sony, Onkyo and others.
I do like the sound of marantz as a brand. I’m struggling to keep the numbers straight but if I were getting one of their receivers I might consider going all the way up to the 40 as I still own all my old games consoles and having them just work would be nice.
Hello Andrew, a Marantz stereo 70 has come on the market. I hope you will also make a review about this. I love your channel.
thanx for fair review !
appreciate !
My pleasure!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews waiting for the next !
Great review! How is the stereo sound quality for music listening of the cinema 40 compared to the model 40n?
I've been longing for this video for a while. I need a "today's" comparison vs the rxa8a. I haven't watch the video yet but I'm pretty sure it's probably mentioned a bit... but a small video between the 2 flagships would be perfect. I'll watch it on my big screen like it's a movie when i get home.
The Cinema 40 is made in with better components and is made in the Shirakawa plant in Japan. I'm been curious about Dirac but I think I have a nearly optimal sound figured out without it.
Hi Andrew and Kristi I am new on your channel and I'm having a blast! You both are interesting, entertaining and wholesome! What are your thoughts about the Monolithe THX T365 30lbs "bookshelf" speakers by monoprice? Or any thoughts on monolithe audio products? Thank you!
Very good video. The only thing that sends me to the Marantz 40 is the silver option. But listening to your comparison, and knowing I'll use it mostly for home theater, I'll go check the Sony!
Hi Andrew, great review, as always! If I'm debating between the cinema 40 and the anthem MRX 740 8K, for me the music quality is more important then dts and I need analog phono amp built in. which one should I go with?
Thanks for the review :) It's really a shame that we can't get the Sony STR lineup in Europe.
I went with the Cinema 60 in order to stay below the $2K mark. It was about twice what I paid for my last AVR and it sounds amazing. Best user interface of any AVR I’ve ever seen! Your video on the first 2023 Marantz you reviewed (I think it was the 50?) was a big part of my decision, so thank you!
Another great review. Andrew u need to review anthem avm90, arcam , audio control before u say the 14k marantz pre/pro is worth that kinda money. Audessy at 14k for that stack is crazy town. I picked the integra drx 8.4 over the marantz 40. Dirac is worth more. Xlr in/outputs worth more, bigger internal amp atmos surround duty work. I like the sound better. In the real world more people will benefit from dirac than 4 sub outs.
I just replaced my old Marantz and really do like this receiver. The one thing I don’t like is when it is switching audio formats the screen cuts out for a second, so to workaround you really have to send the picture to the TV and just audio to receiver.
noticed this too occasionally have some issues.
I really only use music stereo modes but DD DSP for some content and the first DD DSP for movie content. I use multi channel stereo for certain dance music.
Glad to hear you mentioning Denon. Gets little attention, in my opinion.
Hey friends hope you have a wonderful long weekend! I'm definitely interested to hear which came out on top for both of you. I still think I most want to hear a Sony AVR in my own theater, but my Pioneer (Onkyo) isn't going anywhere soon. By the way love the new intro. Keep up the great work.
The Marantz is a looker. I was thinking the 70 with an outboard amp too! Do you have any reviews on amps to pair with it? Thanks!
Interesting review and as usually a good one. Did you also try the Cinema 40 with an external amplifier e.g. like the Audiolab 8300? If so did it bust the stereo performance or did you only experience small improvements not worthy mentioning? Thank you in advance. Brgds Johannes
Hey! I’d love to hear what you guys think about the Model 30, and the SACD 30n!
Thanks for doing this Sunday morning thing! Love the connection and your great content!!!❤
Really appreciate the support Leezah! I'll get you those streamer recs in just a moment.
Thank you!!
Streamers with screens that will show cover art that I recommend are; Cambridge Audio CXN v2 and the Eversolo A6. If you DON'T need cover art, the Audiolab 7000N and Cambridge AXN10 are both solid and more affordable (though the CXN v2 is on mad sale right now). I can't vouch for the HiFi Rose because all of our samples arrived broken and we've been sent 3 at this point.
Thank you so much for this information. I will research both the CXN v2 and the Eversolo!@@andrewrobinsonreviews
Great Review, thx 4 that. Is there a Receiver that closes the gap to the seperates? Like 4K or 5k max which is reliable in usage and without HDMI problems that tops the Sony and Cinema 40?
Video idea: audyssey vs Dirac sound comparison :D I think a lot of people run room correction, sets it and forgets it. Curious how the sound stage and dynamics compare with each other and against no eq.
Another great review!!! I've been torn between the 40 and the SR8015 and now you brought the Sony... Lol I'm currently in an apartment but once we find our house I want to do a dedicated home theater. I wish the 8015 had more 2.1 inputs. Would you pick the Sony over either Marantz? I would like to do a 7.2 and if possible 4 Atmos speakers with B&W 700 Series possibly. Still working on the details after getting the receiver.
Thanks again!!!
Thanks!
Thank you!!!
The receiver looks amazing - best in class looks. Thinking of going with the Sony 5000ES. What are the pros and cons compared to this Marantz 40? I would be looking to get speakers too - a floor stander pair and center maybe from SF lumina line and a sub. Please let me know if you have recommendations.
Thanks so much for all the hard work you both put into these videos. The hard work comes across clearly as pure quality!
Andrew, when you do these listening tests, receiver vs receiver, what is your A/B listening approach? Are you using a speaker level switcher to take the receiver speaker outputs and do a side by side?
How does it compare to the 8015 which was reviewed a little over a year ago? Looks and Dirac aside, the big difference is the lack of a toroidal which puts the Cinema 40 closer to a 7000 series.
Hey Andrew
Thank another insightful review. You mentioned playing your music Apple TV 4K. Does this give allow gapless playback? Feel free to mention any other benefits of listening to music this way please.
Regards
Loyiso (South Africa)
Hi Andrew. I am an older fan of stereo and electronics. I don't qualify as an audiophile, but definitely a bit of a snob and willing to pay more for quality. I used to build Heathkit products as a kid with my father who passed on his interests and love of music to me. Things have changed so much that I am not quite able to keep up. I do understand the concepts so I find your videos a great resource because you help sift down to the basics that help me grasp what's going on. I am from the old school where a lot of companies were highly respected such as McIntosh or Nakamichi were top of the line. I think that some of the old companies are not the same. We are going to buy a new system and I actually got my wife on board. We listened to the B&O Harmony and it sounded great but I couldn't help but wonder if putting together an entire system would be the better way to go. I found your channel and now I love your reviews. A salesman at another shop had me interested in the McIntosh but at about $8000. After hearing your reviews sanity has taken over and I am looking in the range of the Marantz Cinema 40, Sony 7000ES etc. That leaves me more money to upgrade the TV and speakers. Now I need to start thinking about speakers. Thank you for your great work!
Thanks for the review! What is the best stereo sounding AVR?
That's subjective. That's why there's so many choices.
@@davidjudd951 are there any other options than Arcam? The requirements are perfect stereo sound, HDMI 2.1, 8K, Dirac. Does NAD have any plans to upgrade its T778? Anthem still has software issues. Thanks!
Well the 3,000 dollar receiver market is not in the cards for me. Not that I couldn't afford it, but they really are overkill for my needs (smaller room). But you have me seriously considering the Cinema 70 series to replace my aging 2005 Denon 2805. It's still alive and kicking but horrendously outdated at this point. Plus I have recently purchased a Cambridge AX35 for 2 channel use and I think mixing this with the 70 would be a great match. Great reviews Andrew and Kristi. I think you are one of the better channels for layman audiophiles like me. A good mix of moderately high and low end reviews with plenty of detailed info to make an informed decision. Keep up the good work!
I wanna see a dedicated video on Sony Spatial Mapping vs Dirac
Love my M 60 🎉
I got the Cinema 50 and Dirac should have been included with the purchase.
Hello - did you make a review of the Denon AVC A1H ? That looks great with everything on board.
They still have not sent one.
Thinking and thinking some more about going Marrantz cinema 50 and a ones in a lifetime Amp10 behind it. Then add another B4s makes 2 subs placed to the back of my couch. Moving my B&W 703 s2 to the back and going for B&W 702 s3 in the front. It’s going to take a few years of thinking and then thinking some more!🧐
it’s got to be done!
This is the way!
I have to say the design is very tasteful.
Good morning, excellent review as always, regards
Thanks!
Do you prefer class AB , D or G/H amplification ?
What a great presentation! You got a new subscriber! Thanks!!! (What AVR would you recommend for my setup: I only have two front speakers, 685 S2 and an AS608 subwoofer. I listen mostly to music, Classic Rock. I am old school and don't like rear speakers, however, I like to see the files on the TV screen. I was thinking about the Marantz Cinema 60 or the Onkyo TX-RZ50... thanks again!)
Why are you considering an AVR when you only want two speakers. Surely a stereo amp would be more suitable
Hi Andrew, thanks for the nice detailed review. If possible, please do a comparison: SR8015 vs. CINEMA 40. Thanks a lot
Not needed comparison of both units...the SR8015 sounds better due to better components circuitry copper things...and above all the toroidal alim...
I've got both: my takes are:
C40 has the advantage to allow consumers playing with Audyssey and Dirac... but to me the overall sound is less precise accurate than the SR8015 and I have to add a MCA325 for the LCR else I found it a bit restrained...
The SR8015 is indeed less futuproof than the C40 but as the overall sound is better theses future proofs stuffs are not a selling point to me as I don't use 8k and/or play games so...
@@JJJ-dz1he And dealers still have new 8015s at discounted prices.
I really get a chuckle hearing that 1970's silver components really get your motors revving!
I have the SR7015...equal of the C40 in specs...in my main living room and a 70 Slimline with Emotiva 3ch powering the LCR's and an Emotiva 4ch filling the rest of my base layer in my larger entertainment room for $2200 all in. Sonically and with distinctly more scale if my two systems got into a fistfight the SR7015 would leave with a hole punched in its chest...good job by the way, as always....slick
I think the Cinema 70 and 50 are the best options for most people. The 70 has as many channels as the 60 but less power. But with the money saved, you can buy a multi-channel power amplifier and still get to roughly the same price as the 60. Also, it's form factor is more approachable and will fit into more cabinets. Increasingly, a lot of TV stands that aren't purpose built home theatre media consoles don't fit these larger receivers. Or just upgrade straight to the Cinema 50 and get more channels as well. The 40 is quite a bit more expensive than the 50 without offering too much more.
Would be really curious how the Cinema 30 will stack up to the rest.. Seems like that one packs even more.
And then there is that beast, the Denon A1H.. However that thing is pretty much twice the price of most receivers here.
Thank you. I will buy Sony Spacial sound best in the world
Would love to see a review on the Emotiva MR1 released this year and how it compares to these high end receivers
Yeah - in the meantime if you're interested you can go to their forum and read some comments by balthazar2k4 who bought the Cinema 40 and MR1 and compared them. He had the same issue as I did with bi-amping the LR with a premium 5 channel set up. You can also see my questions about their Room EQ and some great tips on microphone measurements and what surfaces are good to avoid reflections.
Love the APC mentions! Josh Freese is a magician
I caught the sneaky - you're reviewing one of the new B&W 600 S3 speakers next!
I stick with my Marantz SR7013. It does everything I need and a ton I don't need. If I was in the market, the 40 would be my buy.
I recently upgraded my receiver and was going to go back to Yamaha but decided on the Marantz cinema 40 over the Anthem and Denon. My local shop sells all these makes and Sony never came up, even though they sell it also. So I was surprised by this review. I think most view Sony as tier 2 electronics. Friends and family have had lots of trouble with Sony quality as a brand. I would not consider it for that reason alone. Great reviews though.
I am wondering why you have not review denon x4800h? Well I know the x4800h is almost the same as x3800h, but i really want to know if there is any good between those from your point of view. Hope to see your review on x4800h in the future. I also like to watch if you will review the audiolab 8300xp too. Thanks a lot.
Can you review the Philips Fidelio FB1 soundbar?
