    You need to interview nonwhite people to get a better understanding of racism in Japan. You interviewed 3 white people and 1 brown person. Japanese aren't typically racists toward white people but are very racists toward other Asians and black/brown people .

      Like everywhere else: ...... But the frequency of experiencing discrimination in Japan would obviously be lower than in other countries. The data on return visits to Japan over the past 5 years shows that the tourists who come to Japan are mainly Asian. They come back to Japan 2-5 times or more because they enjoyed their trip. If they had experienced racism in their travels, why do we have over 60% repeat visitors? Even with false data in the media, people will decide if they want to travel to Japan again based on the experiences they have actually seen when they come to Japan. You, too, should drop the stereotypes and experience it for yourself. There are at least some racists, unfortunately, as there are in every country, but there are obviously not as many in Japan as in other countries.

      @@MatthewSlocum-j5z I'm willing to bet those repeat visitors are mostly South Koreans, Taiwanese and Mainland Chinese. They face discrimination in Japan but much less than the SE Asians, Indians, Pakistanis and other South Asians and Africans. I noticed when I visited Japan many times, Taiwanese are really liked by the Japanese and vise-versa for some reason.

      Are you seriously suggesting that racist Japanese aren't racist towards white people? Would the racist Japanese be happy if their family married white people? Japan has people from Korea and China for generations and they are still treated as non Japanese and second class citizens. It's not about Black or Brown people. The racists in Japan are against any non Japanese people

    Im an African American and I've visited Kyoto but for a couple of days with a group. I personally haven't expected any racism but then again i wasn't visiting for a long time to feel it people were polite just like people in Tokyo and Osaka.
    I will say i enjoyed Tokyo and Osaka a bit more for the activities but Kyoto is very reserved but also so beautiful with different culture and more calm ❤.

    It’s amazing how foreigners who visit Japan experience no racism and foreigners who live a long time in Japan experience a lot of racism. For me I’ve lived in Japan for more than two decades and I think it’s the most racist and xenophobic country I’ve ever lived in, but my family here are Japanese so I stay for them. And I’ve lived all over the world including in apartheid South Africa but I still think Japan is the worst for xenophobia and racism.

      @@MatthewSlocum-j5z I can see both sides of the argument. You can fit in and marry, have kids, be kinda accepted, but you will always be a Gaijin, no matter what happens. You will never be fully accepted. Japan is an amazing country for sure and you can have a brilliant life there, better than most places in the world, but you will always be an outsider when push comes to shove

      @@MatthewSlocum-j5z I like that the world has Japan. I like Japan. It's neat that the world has that. It would be a shame to lose that. I hope they don't give into the bullying and guilt European nations and America are attempting to leverage against them to get them to open their borders and change their country. That would be, frankly, evil.

    of the two times I been there, both times I was mocked and stared at just because I was white.
    I was redirected from restaurants who wouldn't serve locals, and hell while i did not partake, the whole sex industry in the country hates foreigners as well.
    I still remember going to a spot in osaka's food districts with friends and being told they had no tables when half the place was empty... then there was the time I almost collapse on the street. In my home country half a dozen people would have checked to see if i was okay... In japan? they just walked around me...

    Thank you for the great learning topic........The way I was raised as a black man, my mother made a statement, right after I joined the U.S Air Force when I was young, never forget that you are a black man but also don't worry, the others will certainly remind you. As a black man who has visited 13 countries, including Japan, I would say that its a mix of reasons. However here is the main reason for racism, anywhere in the world. Most people were not truly educated (when they were very young) about the origins of mankind or modern humans/homo-sapiens-sapiens. Most people only learn about their culture but not about how mankind migrated from out of Africa, to all parts of the world. If everyone was taught the truth about our human species and how much we all have in common (avg. 99.9% of the same DNA, we are one scientifically one human race) then maybe they would be less racism, xenophobia, discrimination, prejudice,racial profiling etc. Japan like many other countries, wants to be respected and welcomed in all parts of the world but they are less welcoming towards people of color and that is a fact (I've been there). Nobody seems to care about a few brown/black foreigners here and there but let a few thousands come and then you'll see the real truth. Racism is a social construct by what they were taught and in their earliest years of education from schools, families and social constructs. If you told a Japanese person that your culture is from Japan but not your most original ancestors, actually migrated out of Africa as black to all parts of the world, around 50 thousand years ago, they would be shocked. They should also know that as early as 10 thousand years ago, most modern humans were still dark skinned (or considered black in today's understanding) and gradually developed different and lighter pigmentation's an other human features, all due to their stationary habitat (over thousands of years) group environments, UVR's, diets and vitamin D. Although I have experienced racism, discrimination or racial profiling in every country, most of the people were still wonderful, good loving people.

    • @overthewebb
      @overthewebb 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That was a great comment although some things I will disagree with you on, for example that racism is a social construct and I think you are classing that what we class as racism seems to being shaped by what happened in the West. You are speaking about how there would be less racism if people knew that we ultimately come from Africa, yet any person knows this with basic education no matter what country they are from. Racism or bigotry is inbuilt into us in some way as humans. I'm not saying it is right, far from it, but we evolved to be wary of people who look and act different for good reason for survival and this came as long ago as when we as humans came from Africa and to wary of the tribe next door who may kill us. How do you explain all the tribal conflict in Africa right now, with people with similar skin colour, but different races fighting? Yes I'm saying races, as an Ethiopian or Somalian is a different race to a Nigerian. In the same way a Greek person is very different to a British person in Europe.
      Racism was inbuilt to save each of our differing waring tribes. Tribal warefare that has happened across every part of the world. The only difference now is we live in multi ethnic countries in the world now, so this is not needed anymore. People naturally gravitate towards people who are alike naturally. If you see someone on tv who looks like you and is from your country, I promise you will back them over someone who isn't 9 times out of 10 as long as they are a good person. We also back each other as countries against each other in sports no matter the skin colour etc. White people in Japan do get racism against them. White people in some African countries or in South America will get racism against them. It's human nature. Now racism is wrong. 100%, but it's not as easy as you are making things out to be. African Americans have issues with Black South American coming over the Southern border for a reason right now and I'm not American. I have family from different parts of the world and I loved your last sentence, take care brother

    I think you’re conflating racism with xenophobia. Racism, the deep seated hatred for a group primarily based on skin color, is a uniquely European thing and doesn’t really exist in non-white societies. You may experience xenophobia in Asian or African Countries, but actual racism is very rare. Many non-white people will tell you that they weren’t aware of their race until they travel to predominately white countries. Because the concept of race was invented by Europeans and is (I’m sorry to say) essentially apart of their culture since it has existed within their societies for so long. It’s a complex topic, but it’s important a differentiation is made.
