- L&T, a construction giant with a long history, came into the defence business only at the turn of the 21st century, thanks to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam who roped in companies like the Tatas and L&T to build some parts in the Integrated Guided Missile Programme in the 1980s.
At the beginning of this century, the government opened up licensed defence manufacturing for Indian companies. Then L&T decided to obtain defence licenses. Since then, it has been a thrilling ride, a bit of a roller coaster, says Arun T. Ramchandani, head of L&T Defence in this chat with Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale in the latest episode of On the Shop Floor.
Looking back, he says because L&T started from a core R&D base it has been able to build at least 250 products for the armed forces. About 35 of them are in serial production today. Gradually the company also got into warship construction and has made a name for itself in designing and building submarines too. Watch the full episode shot at L&T's Talegaon complex.

Not really. It's highly misguiding bcoz "personal views of company" are shown. For e.g. recent HAL interview, the chairman spoke about HAL Tejas demands in 5-6 countries and ongoing talks. But in reality they have rejected Tejas (as it is not War tested + doesn't have FOC clearance+ Not used by IAF itself as Mk1 is under upgrade right now) - Nigeria, Egypt went for Rafale while Cameroon, & Others went for Gripen.

I amazed pleasantly to see the level of capabilities L& T has indigenously developed. Our Engineer can do anything. Just support them with good projects. All the best for them to conquer the world not with war but with technologies to defend of a need if unfortunately arises.
I was always a fan of defence and defence instruments. Always want to know how they made, the process behind them, the engineering and everything. Today I was so happy when I found this channel. This type of long conversation with defence experts and builders is very fascinating.

Very happy to hear that L&T had 50 percent of the components of K9 thunder being made. Their Light tank design and production is very critical as it will pave the way for and ingenious MBT and cover all the mistakes of Arjun tank. Hopefully their tanks will take over the retirement of T72 tanks from the army.

As for the simplicity our leadership and engineers are so simple we need highlight or train them on cyelber and honey trap by our IB. Most probably they must be doing it.

I liked this video. But I have a suggestion to this interviewer. Instead of pampering the interviewee the interviewer should allow the interviewee to tell as much as possible so that our youngsters can be influenced by it and thus progress their careers on defense so that Indioa would benefit down the road. Why does Nitin only talk to the top brass, like CEO's, or CMD's? Sure, these guys have big picture information, but it seems they want to hog the limelight and not share media space with their employees. Typical Indian mentality. It would be nice to hear floor managers, R&D staff, ordinary workers talk about their roles. There are not enough graphics, historical information, balance sheet information, sales projections, comparisons, etc. Sadly, this is a very shoddy production, with Nitin only parroting what he hears, and obviously not doing his homework.
Why not build jet engine for ciilian aircraft?

Large companies like L&T, Adani should develop marine engines for small/medium sized fishing boats, speed boats & merchant ships.
Indian military lacks vision that's why there is no mid/long range rockets in the armed force. They're stuck with same range pinaka for 2 decades & even older soviet systems. If India had varieties of rockets ranged 40km, 100km, 180km & 240km ; total defence exports from India could easily outshine Israel/ Turkey/ Spain.
