    When you install the outside picture frame board I think it’s best to measure back and pop a line because if you follow your 1 1/4 block and the deck isn’t perfectly straight you’ll have a bow in it wherever the deck is out because we know wood isn’t perfectly straight there for having a bow that will go the whole way back towards the house. Especially when resurfacing a deck.

    For the two extra joists installed parallel to the out edge joists, to support the picture frame, you mentioned using Simpson L70 hangers. Do you have just 1 L70 per end on each joist stub? I'm guessing on the first one, its on the outside face, and on the second one I see its installed on the inside face (looking at time 8:08). Actually, looking at that tine mark, I'm confused about the placement of the L70 on the joist stub that is sandwiched in the middle -- is there enough space on either side for its L70? Looking at building a comparable deck right now with a 1 board picture frame, and possibly this supplemental blocking method would be easier than what I was planning.

    Great presentation ! When fastening down a scalloped bottom like the Enhance Naturals deck board, as you said you need to be at least an inch away from the edge or end, but does it matter if you end up putting a screw in the thinner portion of the board... or even halfway on both the thinner/thicker portion ? Or is it just better to always screw in the thicker portion ? Thanks.

      Hello, and thank you for watching Trex Academy! On this project we used 2x10 joist material. The gap present in this video was 1 1/4". This gap can vary on a couple of things, for example how much the deck boards will overhang the outside rim joist. If you have any other questions, please feel free to call us at 1-800-289-8739. What was the length of the picture frame board on the long side (16ft) that you cut down to fit? Was it a 20 foot picture frame board? What did you use on the 12 foot side to cut down to make it fit? Very helpful video.

      Hello, we manufacture both 12' and 16' profiles of most of our boards. Those can be used for picture frame applications when using the square edge profile of the boards. If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to us 1-800-289-8739. Thank you, Trex Customer Care Team

    I'm building a Trex deck that's also 12x16' and about 2' high, just like in your video. But I'm not planning on using a ledger board, and instead will have 9x 12" cement footings (in a 3x3 formation), under a freestanding deck. The beams will be resting right on the cement footings, also like in your video.
    My question is - how can I best install the header joist (where a ledger board would've been installed) since I don't have the benefit of working off of the ledger board and then nailing in the joist hangers for each perpendicular joist etc. Should I use temporary make-shift supports installed to the underside of a few joists so I can rest the header board on them and then remove the supports after the board is nailed in, and then install the rest of joists or lay out all the joists and save the header board for last?

      Hello Allison, thank you for reaching out to us with this question. We love to see you chose Trex! For substructure installation questions, we will advise to contact your local code/building official. • @TheTrexCo
      @TheTrexCo  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there Linda! You can certainly still install the deck using square edge boards. You would just be fastening the boards down in a more traditional method similar to what you would see in the video where they are installing the picture frame boards. If you would like to still use the Trex Hideaway Hidden Fasteners you would need to use a router bit to route a groove in the board for the clips.

    Is it a bad idea to complete the whole pocture frame and then lay all your deck boards afterward so you have to use the chalk line and make that cut?

    • @TheTrexCo
      @TheTrexCo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Nate, you could install this way if you would like. It is best to start from the perimeter and work toward the house just in case you need to rip the width of a board so that the smaller piece is next to the house. For the chalk, Most colored chalks are permanent and may discolor the surface. Use only Strait-Line® Dust-Off Marking Chalk (purple), available at Irwin www.Irwin.com. If you have any additional questions please let us know. We are here to help! Kindly, - Trex Customer Care Team

    The trex hidden fastener instructions say to drive the screw flush with the clip and not into it. It is not easy to get exactly flush. I'm wondering how important this is for proper installation. One way to check is to drag the bit over the seated screw head. If there is a difference, the screw can be carefully seated a bit more. On the trex approved deck screws, the ones in the installation guide are pretty hard to find especially color matched. Any tips on sources? Thanks

      Hi there, thank you for reaching out to us today! The color matched composite deck screws that are approved for Trex decking can easily be found on DecksDirect.com or DIY Homecenter. Additionally, you can find the correct color match with Starborn's color matching tool. Here is a link to get there: starbornindustries.com/deck-matcher/tool

      Hello!! The cost of a Trex deck typically runs from $9 to $16 per square foot. Of course, that depends on where you're buying it as the dealers and retailers set their own pricing, and how much you’re purchasing. Visit our Deck Cost Calculator for a customized estimate based on a national average or use our Where to Buy tool www.trex.com/find-trex/ to find a local dealer in your area in which you can reach out and get their specific quote. • @TheTrexCo
      @TheTrexCo  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi there! With all of our 1x6 products we have done extensive testing to determine the maximum recommend spanning is 16" on center. That being said you can still do a 12" center if you would like to as the extra support will not hurt the Trex. As long as you do not exceed the 16" maximum the boards should not sag.

    It looks like the wood frame is touching to house which is something I don't want to go through again! Is there a reason trex is not put on the backside up against the house?!...It should be. Plus close off underneath with trex to avoid pests, rodents, snakes, feral animals etc. IDK...there is new steel decking out which is a definite thought.

    • @TheTrexCo
      @TheTrexCo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello. Thank you for your interest in Trex. Trex is not used against the house as it is not for structural elements. The ledger attachment at the house is one of the main structural elements of a deck build. Flashing this area is very important to reduce the chance of any rot or decay. On Trex Academy th-cam.com/video/tTtLOrC3YqI/w-d-xo.html we have a ledger flashing video that may be of help in this situation. Covering the deck underneath to avoid pests is common and done on a lot of decks but is a personal preference and there are a lot of options to doing that. Yes, steel framing is available, and it may be an option for some. Please feel free to reach back out with any further questions or concerns. Someone from our Customer Care Team will be more than happy to assist. Thank you. -Trex Customer Care 1.800.289.8739 | customercare@trex.com
