I know to not judge a book by its cover but man...this is on thin ice. Looks like a good-natured facebook mom took a meme too literally and made a show about it to support her lgbt+ kid. It's trying to do something and not intentionally mocking anyone but if you know you know. I mean, I can say I've seen worse (trailers) but that's not exactly a compliment.

They need to release better trailers, then!!
Firstly, that's that entire point of a trailer; for you to make a judgement about if the piece of media, in question, is worth consuming or not. But secondly, how are you gonna release *these* trailers, but throw a hissy fit when we point out how ridiculous they make the show look?!
I'm tired!! I can count on one hand how many times a show/movie fronted by trailers this awful turned out to be good.

I’m a huge fan of edgy humor and dark comedy myself, but I’m sick of seeing SO many adult shows being like “the joke is that it’s offensive”. It just feels like lazy writing. I’m a firm believer that basically anything can be joked about, but ultimately the way in which a joke is written can make or break it.
One movie that I feel does dark humor very well is Jojo Rabbit. While it does touch on extremely dark topics due to the nature of being set in 1940s Germany, the humor is an integral part of the storytelling and has depth to it. It serves to show how ridiculous the N@zi ideology really was, and accurately portrays how a child might perceive being indoctrinated into those beliefs.
While it’s very different in nature, Brandon Rogers’ way of writing edgy comedy (both in his original works and Helluva Boss) is also an example of good writing. While he may write jokes based around gay characters, it tends to go beyond “he’s gay- that’s the joke” and instead explores the comedy surrounding the relationship dynamics themselves, never really confusing orientation for personality. While his comedy style is very in-your-face offensive, there’s a lot of nuance within the writing itself to make it genuinely funny.
Hopefully I’m wrong about Q-Force, but it seems like most of the comedy comes from “here’s a stereotype: isn’t that wacky?” rather than exploring the comedy that could come from breaking stereotypes or group dynamics. There’s no subversion of expectation beyond “gay people spy show”, which makes it fall flat almost immediately.

Come on, “adult cartoons” get it together!

    • @eattheasslikeitsgrass5113
      @eattheasslikeitsgrass5113 3 ปีที่แล้ว +99

I think sadly alot of adult media use the "dark humor" as a way to be bigoted or push bigoted politics (ie Rick and Morty defneding the r slur despite none of the writers being neurodivergent or mentally disabled, or Seth Mcfarlane's body of work being a bunch of -isms, and the vast majority of adult shows punching down, Pen & Teller mocking disabled people's rights). And many adults unfortunately arent educated on topics like sexism, ableism, homophobia, etc. (or at least not to an extent that they can truely grasp all the microagressions and abuse minorities suffer). There's no maturity, it feels like stuff I woulda watched when I was in middle school. Only aadultthing about it is saying cusses.
But at its core children's media's goal is to educate, it avoids the kinda dark humor that punches down (The Owl house and queer rep/having an episode dedicated to not trying to "fix" people's disabilities, Infinity train and divorce, etc) in at least modern kids cartoons (older series have the same issues as new adult media.)

It’s definitely a valid concern over media showing black women as hyper masculine, but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have any black lesbian or stud representation at all. Like yeah a lot of straight ppl think lesbians are all masculine, but there’s actually very little butch/stud representation period in media, especially one that’s not a joke. It’d be nice having a character that’s unapologetically a stud while also not being 24/7 aggressive angry black woman: butches/studs can be sensitive and sweet! I would like to discuss the black lesbian, as a well black lesbian, and to put it simply I agree with you and I’m glad you brought it up. It’s exhausting as a black person especially for black lesbians to see stuff like this because we are more than beefy, buzz cut, strong, masculine ppl, I’ve seen this stereotype every fucking where and it’s annoying as hell. Like I cut my hair recently and I do have a buzz cut, but it is annoying for someone to just come up to me, look at my hair cut and be like “omg you got a buzz cut are you like a lesbian?” Like yeah I am a lesbian but I didn’t cut my hair to be perceived as a lesbian. I didn’t cut my hair to scream “LOOK GUYS IM A LESBIAN” I did it for myself because I thought I would look and feel nice. To end this if you’re gonna write a black character or in particular a black lesbian asks black lesbians lmao because these stereotypes hurt us and our community more than you think.

My take as a black sapphic. This is going to be a rant. Although I wish we had more varied representation than the hyper-sexualised ultra femme fetale or the ultra masc aggressive stereotype, I wish we treated black female or female aligned mascs with more respect in this discourse. Because we don’t insult the ultra femme stereotype as we do the masc one. Because masculinity has been so forced on us (and not just masculinity - an animalistic form of masculinity that is associated with blackness) we can often try so hard to get away from it whilst stepping on black female mascs unintentionally. I wish we had a black female masc that wasn’t aggressive or extreme but that’s just the way she lives her life without being the target of bullying or being viewed as unattractive by everyone. I just think we as black sapphics deserve better and we deserve to embrace whatever qualities we want to without being fearful of our existence being a nuisance and pulling back the community. Okay my thumbs are tired. Love this channel btw.

@@imaneclair4836Very much agreed. In part. Stereotypes have their place and are constantly used on tv as the means to something familiar to the audience. The LGBT community, while important, is NOT the bigger part of the world and viewers.
Let's look at Totally Spies as exemple. You have 3 stereotypes:
Clover is the girly girl who lose her mind on boys all the time
Alex is the sport/tomboy girl with short hair and extrovert atitude
Sam is the shyer smart girl with A+ academics.
They are all stereotypes, but they are also more them that. They can kick ass, go to the mall to shop and have fun with a great friendship.
The Q-force show actually have this on their favor. The blond just-out-of-the-closed guy has the actual incentive to push foward, The Lesbian is clearly the voice of reason and realistic of the group, the non-binary/trans/ace/still confused about Stats is the one with sarcastic and pessimist of the group and the twink is the comic relief all shows need to aliviate on too tense moments.
They have 2 big problems in my mind: The first is Twink dont having a real name. That put him in a bad position to those on the audience to futher the stereotype just like you said. If he had a real name it would fall on his actual personality and fun traits instead.
The second is the advertisement. If they had focused less on diverse propaganda and more on action fun they'd actually get the audience. Just look how much better the people found the second trailer.
There is a video someone made 'fixing' the trailer and is basically just the actions part cut on. Watching that video made me WANT to watch the show because it has everything we need: Color, action, fun and excessive explosions.
People just shut down on something that was to advertise themselves on ''diversity' instead of the actual premiss of the show.

    • @Tpeaks

harsh criticism is hard for people to swallow. I get it. But oftentimes it comes from a genuine place of communities wanting people to do better. They have a right to hold creators to a standard when the stories deal with their communities because we know what happens when communities are misrepresented. Its the same with any other community (me talking from the lens of a POC myself). We are harsh critics because we care and we are also tired of having to voice our concerns nicely because people will do whatever they want anyway. With that said, god bless freedom of speech. These creators can do whatever they want, we can criticise all we want, and we can enjoy whatever content we want.
I will also say there is a lack of respect for creators so I agree with your statement especially the last piece. People dont realize how hard it is to write entire scripts or storyboard entire animated shows. Critics often dont care about that. But i think it would be nicer if just people in general remember that these creators behind the Netflix shows work very hard. Even if we do not like it we should always acknowledge the sweat blood and tears they pour into their creations. And thats me speaking as a creator myself.

27:07 What I'm afraid about the character with "the secret" is that she might be trans or gnc, which would be Not Good™ !!! It'd be another "The Crying Game" in that a trans person's transness is treated as such a huge deal, such a plot twist where the other characters may feel betrayed because they view the trans person as if they'd been lying this entire time. And this again plays into the harmful belief around disclosure that if a trans person chooses to be stealth, that they're a liar. When oftentimes trans people choose to be stealth out of safety and survival, not to be mysterious or some shit like that. And it reduces a trans person to one part about themselves instead of a whole complex person. But i mean every character in the trailer seems to be so horribly one dimensional

Satire-the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

Yes, the show plays with steriotypes from the community, the characters can be somewhat shallow and everything is so exaggerated, but there is also a genuine message about standing up for yourself and not settling for less, conversion therapy, homophobia in the workplace, misogyny etc. I think we need to keep in mind the show was meant to be comical and satirical, of course it is not gonna be the promised piece of media that will perfectly represent all LGBTQ people that we keep waiting for. I think that at some point we deserve to be able to laugh at ourselves a bit and roll with the stereotypes while being mindful and critical about them, and I think the show encourages just that through the sheer absurdity of the jokes and characters.

I personally love dark humor, but I think a lot of people (especially those who get super offended, but including the ones who engage in it) don't understand that there's a time and place for those jokes. It matters who the audience is and you have to read the room. You can make tons of messed up jokes with family or partners that makes you guys die laughing, like I do, but that doesn't mean you go to school, work, a public/social setting, or even certain online communities and make jokes that are insensitive or harmful. I hope that makes sense. You predicted that people who like dark humor go too far but I wouldn't say I do. I think people should be able to laugh at themselves and others when it's appropriate; not everyone feels that way and that is FINE, I don't go out of my way to say things that make people of other communities uncomfortable, but with my inner circle, I love me some mean jokes

I have a friend who's sense in humor is racist, homophobic, and sexist. I hate it and tell him to pls not tell me those jokes bc I dont think they're funny. I like dark humor but not when it's used to make fun of a group of people for existing. If you're gonna use a lot of humor like that maybe target it towards communities that yiu are in.

@@idiomatic444 It is normally communities that I'm in, but it is NEVER in front of those it may offend. No one needs to hear jokes about Mexicans (which I am) while walking down the street. It's only with people who I know will laugh at it. As someone who grew up in a family where some people say DISGUSTING things that are really upsetting, I've learned firsthand what simply isn't funny or necessary to say. Especially as a gay person and other minorities, I understand. My sense of dark humor is different than "*says slurs and insults minorities*"

    • @lukebytes5366
      @lukebytes5366 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Exactly. The whole point of dark humor is that it's supposed to bring some sort of happiness to a shitty situation. By, y'know, making them laugh. When told to the wrong person or reduced to "heh it's because he's black" you will easily do the opposite, making the people who went through those things feel more isolated.

Welcome back to a show that says “If you’re part of the LGBTQIA+, you will be expected to be treated like shit in a job/professional setting. And we’re not going to do anything to change that” like... please. As a trans kid, I’ve been taught that I shouldn’t look flamboyant at all if I want a job. I can’t have dyed hair or want piercings or just being able to flat out say that I have they/them pronouns. I get that some stores are starting to accept change and to include pronouns on name tags and they don’t care about your hair or piercings, but that’s not what’s expected. That’s not the average, it’s the best case scenario. We need to normalize people getting the jobs they need without having to worry about how they look or present themself, and even if it’s “not realistic”, it’s a fictional show, and it could do something to pave a path to a better future somehow. It’s better than being lazy and making a “Oh they need to PROVE that they’re strong and capable to have acceptance” storyline.

To be fair to the show, after watching it, the show subverted expectations. They say that you shouldn’t just lie low and hide yourself, you should be unabashedly yourself, and other people just have to accept that. They’d didn’t change, the intolerant people either changed, or shut up.

I hate the fact that ppl is saying like "omg so much steryotipes", but lets be honest there's actual gay people who looks/acts/talks like that, don't they deserve to be somehow in screen too?
I mean, not all gay/les/trans/nb are super straight/cis passing, and it's damn ok to give them representation.
The characters are fine, they are not just gay, they have TALENTS, feelings, and a back story that we can see a little, but the story is well developed...

I feel like the producers were not expecting backlash because it was "made by fellow queer people" and for the community, but like you said, the intentions of the show are unclear. If it's trying to be something revolutionary in queer rep then hm..uh WHAT. It makes more sense as like an lgbtq+ adult comedy show, but even then if it was there should be a more diverse cast since the community is huge and it seems like they were like okay cool, look we have one gay man and one lesbian woman :)
