*To Storytime With Jeff* I live in northern Ontario, Canada and we get winters that are -10 to -40 celsius on average and one tip to keeping your place warm during cold weather is to seal your windows with plastic. I bought a roll of 1 mm thick plastic sheeting for $25 about 5 years ago and just finished it last winter. It makes all of the diffeence and if your not sure where your losing heat from just light a lighter and hold it close to windows, gaps, vents, cracks ect., when the flame flickers you found your air leak. Also never rely on landlords to fix anything, as long as its not costing them money and you are the one suffering they don't give a shyte so you need to learn to do it yourself, just don't spend a ton of money.
Great advice, that's how we did it too. Last year thermal cameras got cheap enough that I bought one and found a ton of areas we were losing heat from. Even found a squirrel nest in the attic that showed up as a big hotspot through the drywall from the inside of my room.
Though, if you fix any issue in an apartment you could be considered in breach of your lease most of the time, as the vast majority consider any kind of non-approved modifications an immediate void of the lease. So I understand many people's hesitancy to do such things.
@@Mehiall1 If any landlord was dumb enough to try and go after a tenant that had to modify their home is a non harmful way to make it comfortable and within the framework of the law and health and safety then that landlord is going to have a very, very bad day in court because the judge will look at said landlord and ask "Why is the tenant who is paying several hundreds to several thousands of dollars of rent every month having to do the repairs and work that you, the landlord should be doing to ensure their home is comfortable to live in?"
People really underestimate the cold, I remember being homeless during "The beast from the east" in the UK years back and it got to 7F for a few days, I'm still amazed I and those around me made it through, though I only did because I found a closed down shop with a shed around the back with lots of rolls of carpet underlay I shored up around the walls, the door, above me, essentially making a pillow fort of underlay. I would absolutely start a tenants union, and hopefully you have pictures/recordings of the temperature to report them to whatever ombudsman or whoever you can/should report them to. You sound like you're very bunged up & congested. Feel better bud.
In my experience, the answer to “Why does an apartment complex have so much bureaucracy?” Question is quite simple: *It probably doesn’t.* Some people let even a little bit of power go to their head, and that front desk lady is one of them, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s making most, if not all of it up, ESPECIALLY with that whole elevator thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if that whole ‘appointment’ thing was just a way for front desk lady to make some extra cash, happens all the time, especially in ‘hood’ areas.
While it would have been a bit less efficient than just keeping them on you, you might have been able to put up some blankets over the windows to keep some more heat in. I'm not sure, but I think some Inuit peoples use furs as doors. At least that's what Avatar: The Last Airbender taught me lol
@@storytimewithjeff My dad did something similar one time but with insulation and foil We left the blinds on the window and sealed the frame, when we took it down in the winter the blinds were melted, but it kept the hot air out 😂
Congrats man, you now experience what we experience in less cold countries when the temperature drops. Here where I live, it can get to 0°C sometimes and my windows have cracks in it when it's closed. The first layer of the window has holes in it for ventilation (can get to 38°C here in the summer).
Tip: use paper (newspaper, scrap, clean toiletries) to cover windows. Also try to use as many quilts, jackets, clothes or even paper to cover yourself in severe temps. Ensure all electronics are disabled (personal) as it can damage certain parts due to temp. Also, if you are blessed with curtains close them. Try to move to a room near more heating and away from windows to keep in as much heat as possible. Also, conserve water and food. You never know when you’ll need it. Same goes for electric charge and gas.
I feel you. It was 87-93 degrees in my apartment for 2 months during a heat wave. I was pestering the landlady the whole time, and they eventually fixed my AC, but again, feels illegal.
I live in a massive wooden house built in like the 1800s, we also have the single pane window problem. But we just put a woodstove on both sides of our house, so now in the winter its just unbearably hot
I work as a volunteer in a transitional housing facility - which is a step above an emergency homeless shelter, but a step below an apartment - it’s maybe just below a ‘Halfway-House’ because we are not under the tenancy and landlords act here - we are not tenants( even though we pay rent - or many of us residents are gov’t subsidized and don’t pay a nickel, or we pay half and the gov’t pays half). We signed lease agreements, but our zoning laws classify this building as a motel because the town does not want this to be under the tenancy act and be an apartment complex - even though everyone here has lived here for a year…what motel or hotel has had EVERY ROOM booked by a single person for a year straight?! Anyway, I’m in a tight spot being I started as a resident and was offered free room and board to be a Night Auditor/Caretaker/Security detail for the place, 5 on, 5 off - another resident has the same deal. Myself, the management and board of directors always shirk off meeting me to sign the lease agreement I was supposed to sign when I moved in here. Staff were on holiday the week I was moved in, and it has been a year, I’ve been moved to a new room that ISN’T a cinder block prison cell, now I have 3 walls that are plaster, and one remaining cinder block wall…no power to the A/Cs… It is near impossible to get out of this as I am a fucking zombie during days and nights, I fail to report any records of income or lack thereof within the deadline just from being mentally or physically fried and failing to be awake to do so - my sleep is dictated by when 30+ mentally handicapped folks aren’t banging on my door to reboot the internet or get them Kraft dinner or coffee or whatever…I’m borderline a slave, and the only other option is find a way to power through and manage to pull up my bootstraps like Papa Bezos and Elon Musk say we should do - or go and live on the streets and be homeless. I haven’t worked a paying job in over a year - I also haven’t been able to sign a contract stating I work here, I’m not paid…so it’s debatable whether I can count this as employment or if it’s just a volunteer thing - which still leaves the massive one and a half year gap of unemployment time - this gap is what I believe contributes to my lack of being hired elsewhere, being visibly in poverty doesn’t help either - I’m not a Raggy Crackhead lookalike, I’m “well put together” but I’m right at that level of looking like I make enough to stay barely afloat and be a normal citizen - but with super dirty or lazy living habits - another contributing factor. I am the asshole that will be put in the penalty box for giving you your stuff if you ask for it when “actual staff” (whom are also unpaid volunteers - I have keys to the place too…) are not around. Only, I won’t just have to find another job and have had valid documentable work experience to at least transition me steadily into another job or a house to go to - I will be put on the fucking streets. I consider myself 100% a slave - whips exchanged for threats of death in the cold, or an indentured servant at best. 2024 and Slavery still exists, but I’m young, maybe I just “don’t get it”, maybe you all think I’m over-exaggerating by calling it Slavery…but if I look for a job elsewhere I’m on the streets, if I do not I’m stuck eating a single stale hamburger bun per day…I’m 6’0” 120lbs…I have recently been stealing food from this place just to stay alive and they’re catching on…I might snap and murder these “fine compassionate and morally righteous Pentecostal Catholics” just to have a warm prison cell to sleep in and some bunghole to keep my dick warm - in this place we have a no visitation policy. I haven’t had a weekend off in two months, I haven’t had a day off in two months - to these people our “day off” means shit. This isn’t volunteer work anymore, not by my account of Canadian work law. I might kill these fucks for pushing me to legitimately consider suicide…attempts caused by depression were unjustified - THIS is a reason one would almost be justified to kill themselves or another…fucking LITERAL modern day slavery. Regardless, I’m sorry I’m not allowed to give you a blanket to prevent you from freezing - I’ll freeze to death on the streets of Canada if I do…at least if we wait till staff get here to help you, we both have four walls to protect us from the wind. …fucksakes I’m going insane here…a non-livable minimum wage would be a better deal that no wage or food at all. Slavery never left, Whites didn’t enslave solely Blacks, they also sold Whites as well - Jews sold Jews into Slavery…Blacks sold Blacks…every culture did this shit- not my point…point is, Bureaucratic Policy, Laws, and Bylaws enable Slavery - not the legalization of slavery itself.
