My husband lost his job a couple years ago. The Amish community we were friends with helped us learn to can. They talked us into getting a Kitchen Queen wood stove. We love it. It already paid for itself heating and cooking in our farmhouse . They came and made vegetable soup and canned chicken. We baked bread and pizza. I love them!

This is a very educational video however it's the first Amish family I have ever seen with a electric amenities the Amish culture around my area is still more Rual where they have a wood-burning stove and the refrigerator runs off of kerosene and they still wash by hand

THAT sounds like how I’m living 🥰👍. I saved my wood stove which is rusted and bought an oven that sets on top and you can bake in it. The wood stove was just for heating- not baking. My house burned down, being on my land 40 years, and no money to rebuild I got a camper !! I live in it with my husky and lug water and couldn’t be happier … I’m trying my hand at water bath everything like the Amish do. No pressure canner for this girl. Nope

I remember being invited to an amish canning party one time. It was to help a new family that just had their first baby. We was told to come at 5 in the morning. So we had breakfast super early before we headed out. I kid you not there were over 100 people already at their house when we arrived. My husband joined the men in splitting firewood. They asked us to bring our log splitter with us. The kids went to work in the garden picking what was left while the women were inside prepping jars and the designated canning area. At 11 we stopped working had lunch and fellowship. Afterwards we were back at it cleaning up and by this point the girls were helping and the boys were helping stack firewood. We left at 9pm and canned over 1,000 jars and had over 30 ricks of wood split and stacked for the family. It was an awesome feeling and rewarding.

I grew up in an Amish area. Attended an Amish Bible school. My family got produce, milk, eggs and sometimes we were invited to share homemade ice cream with the family. This video was so appreciated and the ladies were so gracious to allow all of us to be invited to learn and get to see their wonderful lifestyle. Giving us insight into how being sustainable and growing your own food, living off the land more simply is not only healthier; but gives you a sense of accomplishment.

This reminds me of growing up. My mom and her sisters loved getting together to “can and visit” as they called it. We always made tons of applesauce and applebutter in the fall. We had a very large 75 gallon brass kettle and metal frame that we made applebutter in outside over a fire. Mom used applesauce in pancakes every Sunday morning and made “fried apple pies” which are hand pies in the winter. Miss those days so bad as they have all passed away. Thanks for sharing.

We have a good selection of bulk ingredients available at the Mennonite store, including Thermaflow and pectin. I keep buying more and more jars, and my grandmother sends them to me in the mail. Apple season is here, and I will be canning spiced apples and pie filling and apple butter and cider here soon. I froze them last year in plastic bags, but that wasn't the best. We have a great selection of fruits and vegetables for canning at a good price here, so that definitely helps.

Pressure can jars of water, it's cheap because a jar that won't seal costs nothing. Watch when removing jars as they are still boiling when you remove them. I bought gloves made to remove oven items as added protection. If you leave the pressure canner until it is room temperature and you can't remove the lid don't panic like i did and i removed all the hardware i could on my all American canner so i could pry the lid off. Instead just turn the heat on under the canner and as it heats up the internal temperature will pop the stuck lid. It doesn't take much. There are great TH-cam videos out there.

Thank you for sharing such an amazing video. I found it unusual that the canning jars weren't filled to the top and had so much extra room in the jars.

I live North of Lancaster Pa and shop primarily there even though it’s quite a drive, I’d rather my money go to their businesses, the true Amish or Mennonite places that the actual people shop at, not any kind of touristy.

Wish I had a separate area for canning. My kitchen is always a mess in August

Sweet lady no apologies needed at all. It’s so kind that you did. This is such an interesting video. Their home and landscaping is immaculate. So lovely. The hydrangeas are beautiful. The bedroom furniture is just amazing! The quilt is one of the most beautiful ones I’ve ever seen. Such skill. I love the crocheted doily. It reminds me of my grandma. She made so many. I have one on a table right now. Thank you for sharing this experience. They were so very kind and helpful to share a part of their life. ❤❤ God Bless 🙏
