This is so comprehensive and helpful. I have been struggling trying to put all of this together, and your explanations have helped me clarify it all in my mind. Can't wait to get out on the court and put it to use! Thank you!
would love to see more lessons with active drills included. It's nice to see it inaction and understand what you're trying to do on court. But don't know how to go about practicing it. Also home exercises or drills for those who can't spend as many hours or days on court.
Another fabulously clear and helpful step-by-step instructional video. I teach at the University. And this is definitely an A+ - and without grade inflation.
Simon, I have a decent serve. How do I build up my serve and volley skills? Any drills I can practice with my doubles partner? My club coaches have told me I should S&V more since my serve is decent (for my level) but I have a tendency to hang back at the baseline. Thanks
Very helpful, thanks. Can you do one for doubles volleys? When already at net, what to do when comes fast and hard at your body, not beside you? Where best to aim when there are two people to get past, etc.? Basics are the same, but must be some differences.
Here is a recommendation for the future videos: 1. Record and present tutorials on some play strategies that players level 3.5-4.5 could use in tournaments. This is something that very few focus on, and it s fundamental to happy tennis life. 2. Record and comment your own tournament plays 3. Publish series of videos on how can players advance their levels of play (for example, most players never advance past NRTP 3.5, so it would be good to have a video or series of videos focused on guiding what it takes to advance a level)

Always great content Simon. I’ve had a question I’ve wanted to ask you for years now. I’ve notice (even in this video) that your grip size seems to be very large on your main racket and smaller on other rackets you use. You mentioned that you’ve recovered from an injury and was wondering if you’ve ever had golfers elbow (not tennis) and if grip size has played a role. Sorry for cluttering up your comment section with this question!
Hi Simon, this is a really nice tutorial, and my backswing was way too long, so I adjusted, but i happen to be on a lot balls, fh and bh, too late, still. I really don't know how to pinpoint the ball, should I try to read the opponent or should only concentrate on the ball, i cant figure out 😞
Hi Simon - Great video as usual. I use the same racquet as you, and was wondering what strings you find work well with it? I’m currently using Volkl Cyclone Tour. Thanks!
Hi Coach SImon, I'm in a group tennis class tonight. Our coach taught us to use volley method to make return of serve, esp effective with powerful serve. Is it true?
I'm a 68 year old 3.5 level doubles player and volleys are the weakest part of my game. I find myself hitting the frame quite often on my volleys.....any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
This channel has plenty of honest work, but after 5 minutes of the video, you are describing something that you are not doing in the examples. Not catching like a net, but opening raquet and pushing in a very short swing. I think those are a proper and clean technique, and also the tip is useful to stop backswinging. I don't want to sound rude at all. Thanks for the lesson.
Sorry I disagree back leg bending and unbending going forward , rather then the step I’d the important issue .how about the open space volley which is even more important . The most important theme is upper body stability all else is secondary . Good wisdom on going down the line on low volley. Thanks

@@arunjetli7909 No thanks. I've got thousands of clips of the best players in the world hitting volleys, have analysed them and watched over the footwork patterns. Why would I want to watch some random guy to see how to volley? And coached by you, someone who struggles to spell the names of players like McEnroe?
@HasteCakes Have a good look at the grip you are using? See often that players are using a forehand grip instead of a continental grip because it makes the many higher volleys they get on their playing level easier. Big drawback is much weaker backhand and low volleys because they are either rotating their wrist or have to switch their grip to compensate the angle of the racket face.
I disagree with your footwork. I teach step out with outside foot while pushing off with the other. I arrive quicker and better position to hit accurate
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial You are clearly better trained and more experienced than me but it's not 2 steps. I saw your 2 step part. I prefer to push with inside and step w/outside and repeat if needed. Or step over but arrive on outside foot. Less complicated and it definitely gets you to the shot quicker. And ready for a reply. Btw I'm 66 years old so I need help being quicker. I am subscribed and love your work.
@@boblewis902 If those patterns work for you, then stick to it. However, it sounds like you're using an open stance to volley with, which wouldn't work for 95% of players

Hi Simon ! Can you shoot a video how to body volley ?
Thanks for the 1-step vs 2-step distinction, Simon! I've had perhaps 100 volley lessons and no one has so simply described that moment of choice.
Thanks for watching and good luck with the improvements Ken 👍
this is simply the best volley lesson I have come across...thanks Simon!

Great instruction as always. But the highlight I must say was Alex's quiff in the ad! Love it! Great work guys. Keep it up.

Fantastic advice that is logical and easy to understand. I plan to use this ASAP since I miss "easy" short balls often.
Good luck with the improvements

It sounds like imaging you are hitting a lighter ball (such as badminton/table tennis).
Stepping is dependent on where you want to place ball. It is not arbitrary
Hard to cover ground without moving, unless your opponent is very kind…
