  • Chris and Brett compare two different point and shoot film cameras against each other and compare the results. The Ricoh GR1 and Olympus mju are loaded with Kodak ColorPlus 200. The film in the Ricoh is being shot at 100 iso and the mju at 200 iso, box speed.

This is a really great video showing the capabilities of the cameras and I especially loved how Brett composed the shots! Really showcased the image quality of the lens and what a way to fully utilize that 28mm! Learned a lot from this video, thanks so much guys!

I mostly shoot a Leica M2, but I have has a MJU for years. I recently got a GR1 and have to say it wipes the floor with the MJU. I had previously sworn off point and shoots, but I was blown away by the GR1 negatives.

The Ricoh GR 1 features a 28mm 2.8 lens, which was later built as an Leica screw mount version as well

lol Really felt bad for the mju going into this shoot; really can't hold it's own against the Ricoh. It's just SUCH an impressive camera... I've done a lot of point and shoot research, and the GR1 is by far my favorite P&S of all time...
That said, I actually LIKED some of the darkness that came from the mju under exposing some of the shots. Gave the photos a brooding, mysterious tone... Goes to show that any camera can really shine under the right circumstances...
Loved the laid back feel of the video. Great music! Some really nice shots in there... I've never shot with ColorPlus, personally. I'm more of a Portra man, but I do love experimenting with different films. Not a huge fan of the reddish cast some of the darker shots seem to take on, but other than that, it seems like a promising film stock...
Please keep making videos about film, and film cameras! It's a dying art...

Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and for the feedback. You're right on both counts the GR1 is an excellent point and shoot but any camera can be used to good effect in the right hands. I'm with you on the reddish cast, not my favourite film stock.

One of the biggest issues of reliability centers mainly around the 'motorized' lens movement in these Point & Shoots. With the pop-out & tuck-in action happening so often, the 'paperclip' effect begins to kick-in (the flex wiring communications break). Fixed non-pop-out lens units are best. - - -
i.e. The Yashica T3 & Nikon L35AFW (after service hardening, the Nikon becomes extremely reliable).
