  • Rare Preston Docks Level Crossings and Swing Bridge, Preston Docks, Lancashire on the Ribble Steam Railway.
    Location: Navigation Way, Preston
    Date Filmed: 29-10-2016
    -
    Trains:
    BR Class 14 D9539/1965 + Hawthorn Leslie 3931/1938 ‘Linda’ (Ribble Steam Railway)
    A video of the two level crossings at Preston docks, found on the Ribble Steam Railway. One of these level crossings runs along the road, over the Preston docks swing bridge. The swing bridge occasionally opens for vessels coming in and out of the marina. There's a pedestrian level crossing beside the swing bridge, allowing pedestrians to cross the line. All the equipment seems rather old. It is very interesting to look at and quite awesome seeing a steam train travelling over the bridge. Something very unique and rare in the UK.
    I have noted the fact that the footage was rather shaky (as told by many people in the comments section). This is an old video (from 2016) and many of my newer, more recent videos are far better.
    Thanks For Watching!

    I am aware from all the comments that this video was a bit shaky. Its quite an old video on my channel (filmed in 2016) and I didn't take much consideration into how stable the filming was. My more recent videos (from 2018) are better quality and more stabilised. Thanks for your understanding 😎

    Intriguing how the alarms do not blare on the swing bridge crossing but they do blare on the rail crossing.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are alarms for the swing bridge but they are only used if the swing bridge is in operation. This is because there isn't actually any point where pedestrians can cross the railway line on the bridge, and since the barriers are only blocking the road here, no alarms are needed. There are alarms at the other crossing with warning lights and the footpath crossing at the other end of the bridge (shown in the middle of the video).

      It's weird indeed. It seems that a lot of these particular wigwags (Forest City Halogens) seem to have different flash phases. These wigwags are very old and probably date back at least 30 years or so. The old equipment on heritage railway crossings rarely gets touched. Looks cool though and I see what you mean by being 'messed up'. Certainly looks a bit.

      I was rewatching this video when I noticed something. The gate lights on the crossing at 0:25 appear to be American Lantern-style gate lights made by WRRS (or Western Cullen Hayes, depending on when they were installed, but WCH has never bothered to change the molds on the bases so they all say "WRRS" on them), which is rather odd, especially since Lantern gate lights here in the US tend to be rather rare!

      The wigwags aren't *that* old since this crossing was most likely installed in the 1980s. There are some crossings with older wigwags. The railway is private here so there was a range of diesel and steam locomotives. I just happened to see these two pass. And since it was Halloween, a face was hung from the front of the steam loco.

    Can I ask in what way is it rare to see a train crossing it? It's in use every week at least twice for the bitumen trains. When the steam railway runs it's used numerous times a day.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When I meant "very rare", I was talking about the level crossing and not the frequency of trains. The crossing runs over a swing bridge which is very rare to see in the UK.

    Since the road enters and exits on the same side of the railroad track, I propose that we call this a “level tangent” instead of a “level crossing”.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's pretty cool. Level Crossings without barriers (open crossings) are gradually being upgraded / renewed with new barriers. You will mostly find non-barrier crossings on private railways like this one.

    Why aren't the other lights sounding an alarm?

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The other lights control the traffic going over the swing bridge, so for the train crossing over that bridge, no alarms are required

    Do ALL the gates in the UK go all the way across the road, here there is a gap on both sides, allowing "gate jumpers" to wiggle across (not recommended) .

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some crossings have half barriers with barriers across the left side of the road, and full barriers with barriers across the whole width of the road.
