Date Filmed: 31-05-2018
An abandoned level crossing outside London Gateway Port in Thames Haven, Essex. I presume the railway line was used by freight trains in and out the port but alternative lines have closed this one. One of the warning lights was knocked over and, underneath the rubble, I managed to pull out a cracked halogen light lens. The company name is printed on the outside of the lens, this lens, being used as a colour filter for the halogen bulb. There's also a control panel so I presume this crossing was operated by a train crew member with plungers.

The old abandoned crossings are strangely fascinating and a tad eerie.Can you imagine if it activated though? That would be very eerie!

There's another one nearby in Arctic Avenue! Great video and on GM in 2009,the fallen Wigwag can be seen but it's now removed

Ooh, some of those old triangle back-board lights & some old 3rd Generation GWE's. These are the same type of lights that were at Canterbury St. Stephens, Sandwich Woodnesborough, Lancing & Dunster Sea Lane L/C's (to name a few).
Yeah, I found out these wigwags were likely GEC Elliott wigwags as says the printed name on one of the halogen lens I took (pics at end). It was definitely an interesting find 👍

Yeah I did after I had a little look underneath the fallen light. It looks very unique seeing it in the state it's in

Yeah I've seen the one at Birkenhead online. I find them fascinating too and I'm going to try and visit and film a few more this year on my travels.

The only train that went on this line was probably Thomas the chav engine only once and never again.
Great find and video! I'm willing to bet that the GWE gate mechs have bells in them. And interesting how the bases of the arms are still there.
Thanks David 😎, not sure if this crossing has bells in the barrier units or not. It's possible although the small audible speaker on the old control panel with the button might have been the alarm.

you should check out the March-Wisbeach line loads of abandoned crossings there as well as the lichfield mothballed line has one too,
Yeah, I need to visit that line at somepoint as not much has been done with the abandoned crossings. I believe the line is slowly being restored however.

Yes, you made your point, 10x over, that this crossing is no longer used. The fences look like prison fences.
This is around London Gateway Port so I guess they need decent sized fences to stop trespassers and individuals walking on private port land.

No I don't. In my opinion, talking over videos like these kind of ruins them. My audience is worldwide and watched by different age-groups so it is easy just to not include any talking. I usually include brief information in video descriptions sometimes.

Old branch line around the London Gateway port that's no longer used
It was made for the extensive Thames Haven oil refinery before closing in the 90s. Now it is redundant because the London Gateway port doesn't use the line, and doesn't go that far. I am local to this so if you want any more info, just ask
