I first saw "Vintage Voltage" and this super fast EV Conversion of that lovely Octopus Energy sponsored Beetle! A little late, but congrats to Moggy and his team! I am an expat of the UK, and visited the UK during February 2020, for 21 days holiday ( I reside in Sydney Australia). BUT Covid struck the UK during March 2020, and I got stranded in the UK for almost one year (363 days before I saw my Sydney home again). But I thoroughly watched every "Vintage Voltage" in my confinement in the UK. I must say that 'I was inspired' to go EV with my 1971 Super Bug way back in 2018. But my dream turned to reality during April 2020, but I was deeply frustrated - not being able to see - or drive my newly-converted Electric Beetle, and being confined to the residence in a Bolton (Lancs) street!! I finally made it home, to Australia after 2-weeks held in quarantine when I landed Australia. My first job- was to take a taxi to the factory that completed the EV Conversion, and see AND DRIVE my new Super Beetle. Finally, I love the commentary, the scenery, as Moggy feels thrilled with the Car that he has created. Also, my experiences with my EV Beetle matches with everything that Moggy has said. The weight balance (with added Battery Mass at the front) has definitely removed the "twitchiness" from the steering, as most Beetle owners would agree. The car feels more 'planted' on the road. MY EV Conversion was done exactly the same as the Octopus Energy Beetle. (Tesla model 'S' Battery Pack + Netgain Hyper 9 Motor. Every time that I drive my EV Beetle, I feel lucky, and wear a smile too! I had exactly the same 'teething problems' with the setup of the Inverter Computer as Moggy. All fixed and the car has been 100% reliable. Car goes to Shows, the last one being "Fully Charged" at the Darling Harbour EV Show 2023. It is on YT, and is the only white 1971 EV Super Beetle there on display. Car also goes to the VW Nationals, held in Sydney on 28th May 2023. An Essay, I know, but that is my 'happiest' personal story.
Watched you on Vintage Voltage.... It was a decent series that I feel deserves a second season. What a gorgeous Beetle that in all honesty I would have left original. Oh well, never mind.
A very interesting video Peter, nice one! In my eyes, electric cars have yet to feature on my radar, there's just something about them that hasn't clicked with me yet. This Beetle however, is a different story; a classic car with an electric motor would be on my driveway in a heartbeat! I love it!

One of the most memorable times in my life was living in Newtown in, 92 - 93. Part of the team that built and commissioned Wales' first wind farms. Nice Bug!
Nice video Ped. My Dad had a 1970s Beetle when I was in my teens, would love another. Very impressive work from Moggy and the team. Much easier doing it on a freshly restored car, different story when all the bolts are rusty AF (it's a Beetle) and snap off!
Isn't the hyper 9 a dc motor? I thought dc motors could not get regen? Also, the beetle is the most converted car on the planet. And its great, but as an old car enthusiast, can we see some other configurations converted too? Perhaps inline front wheel drive/4 wheel drive (audi/subaru configuration), transverse front wheel drive or the most common classic configuration of front engined rear wheel drive.
What do these cars cost? do you have to buy the petro beetle first and then hire someone to convert it for can you buy them already done. I'm in Canada. thanks.

will it work safely under heavy rain and if it ran through a puddle in a flooded street after a heavy rain night, what would happen? will it work safely with a lot of water frim beneath as well?
I can answer your question. On date 15th February 2021, I had to take out my Electric Beetle (converted in exactly the same way as this video). The rain was absolutely torrential. On a three-lane highway, I had to cover about 15kM on flooded roads. The Nearside Lane (which I used), had about 100mm of water depth, (in parts where drainage was very poor) and the passing cars also gave my EV Beetle a good soaking! The truth is that my EV Beetle never missed a beat. I wouldn't normally take out my EV Beetle in such extreme weather, but on this rainy day, I had no option. Trust me, the EV Beetle performed just the same as if it was a 'dry' day.
I think the government should offer all classic car owners some funds to convert their old machines to EV if they want to. I think the classic beetle was a great car but the engine was never anything to write home about, now with the improved handling and miles better performance this has become more reliable and less costs to maintain I think it can live on for another 30 years.
Conversions range from £20k to £65k depending on the motor used and the size of the battery pack. ECC do a kit for a Beetle which makes it a bit cheaper 👍
To put in the motor you can remove the two transaxle bolts and tilt down the transaxle just a touch. It works and you can then re-torque the transaxle bolts. I do this so I don't have to cut any metal. Im putting in a double stack AC-35 from HPEVS into my Bug. Ive had two different motors in that beastie and the AC-35 will be the shortest in the bug. Easy to mount.
I have one question. Is it possible the battery pack could be smaller. Like say a lithium ion type of battery. And next idea is the charging system could be maintained from one of the rotating wheels...
It gets some charge from regenerative braking. If you work out how to fully charge the battery from a rotating wheel then you will be a billionaire before you know it as you will have invented perpetual motion 😜👍
@@PetrolPed The 1972 1302s was my first automobile. And the Auto Mechanic was my first trade l learned from the German Automobile School. One interesting thing l learned about the beetles is the way the speedometer clock work's. And this was connected straight from right front wheel to center of the speedometer clock of the dash board. And so from this same principle using the left front wheel. A unit similar the electrical controller can be created. I called this the Alternator Controller box. This key unit l am inventing is responsible for the purpose of maintaining voltage level of the electrical batteries in supporting the electric motor function. That was one of my idea

I did watch this program on Quest probably 6 to 8 weeks ago, why I remember it the registration SMB are my wife's initials if I remember correctly in the program you presented it to a young girl accompanied by her mother after it had been completed and you test drove it yourself and at that time I didn't realise you was presenting electric cars on Quest although I do remember on one of your own programs PP that you had stated that you was going to do programs on electric cars with a friend who had been at University with you, but you both went your separate ways..

I have a Beetle 1300 and I have been tinkering around the idea of going electric. Wonderful video and great achievement.

Perfectly fine. Everything is sealed. In fact it should deal with deep water better than an internal combustion engine 👍
