Steve has been doing this since he was fourteen and with the Spencer Davis Group, then the band Traffic, then the band Blind Faith, then back to Traffic and then his solo career. This is a fine tune, and with Nile Rodgers on guitar and Chaka Kahn with backup vocals lending their talent, you can't go wrong!

.I don't want to sound like a punk. But, when I see people today in 2024 getting their spirit lifted hearing music from my generation it gets me very emotional. It means the music from my youth survived time and decades to come to touch people years later. There is no better feeling than watching this type of GENUINE reaction to my music from back in the day. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I like that you used the Swedish/Yiddish word. It’s extremely hip. “smorgasbord”
    1. a buffet meal of various hot and cold hors d'oeuvres, salads, casserole dishes, meats, cheeses, etc.
    2. *an extensive array or *variety of things.
The company has a smorgasbord of employee benefits.

This is one of a handful of songs that can lift my spirits and even get me dancing from the get-go. It builds, which pulls you into the song. Then you have the horns which take you higher, to church even, like a blast of hot air. Then you have the rhythm section grounding you, pulling you into your feet where you feel the funk and bass. Like you said, it's the PERFECT song with all the right elements that work. I personally like Chaka taking a back seat on this one, because she adds just enough effervescence to put highlights on Steve's vocals. Thanks for reacting. You are always so enthusiastic and I love it.

When Steve performed this on Letterman’s show, Paul Shaffer whom I respect tremendously as a musician was making excuses ahead of time in case the band screwed it up and said it was one of the hardest songs they had ever had to learn. The video is on TH-cam. To be honest, they, not Steve, struggled to keep up. But they won my respect as a musician.

It is unexpected, as one of that area, to hear Chaka Kahn being referred to in any way as a "backup singer" in this performance. Chaka Kahn was/is a Superstar in her own right. Whenever I see this song credited, it is by Steve Linwood, Featuring Chaka Kahn. I would suggest that instead of the term "backup singer", the term "Co-Star" or "Guest Star" to be a better fit. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing you experience this for the first time.

Massive talent since he was a kid.14 when he joined Spencer Davis Group.
I mentioned it when you did Roll With it, but you gotta find the video for Keep On Runnin' from them. Steve was 16 or 17 and it was their first number one I believe. Fantastic performance!
Another one from this album is Back in the High Life Again. Valerie is another later solo worth checking out.
Arc Of A Diver is a recommendation from the album of the same name that he did everything on as mentioned before. He's a singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and more.
As others have mentioned, along with exploring his early days with Spencer Davis Group - Traffic and Blind Faith. Clapton always gets the spotlight in the early groups he was in but he wanted to be in a group with Steve and that's how Blind Faith supergroup happened,
    Great reaction! Thanks. :)

When you're ready for more from Steve Winwood check out "While You See A Chance" from 1980 as well as Traffic "Freedom Rider" from 1970. Also check out Chaka Khan at 21. I'm sure you've plugged into Spencer Davis Group with a young 16 years old Steve Winwood singing "I'm a Man" or "Gimme Some A Lovin". Stevey cut his soulful chops in that Motown era and through Traffic, Blind Faith and his long solo career, he is beyond compare, a class of his own.

Chaka's label wouldn't allow her to be a co-artist against her wishes. Right after her run of 3 big hits in 84 to 86. What you see and hear is probably the limits under her contract and she probably had to fight for that. It was a #1 hit in the US. Another bad call by record execs.

EVERYTHING about this song is great! I have loved it since it first came out. The instruments/music/beat, the vocals (by BOTH of them), the lyrics (& meaning). EV-ER-Y-THING was good with this - (although the music video was not as good as it could be, as they tried to take away the meaning visually by making it human love. This happened ALL the time in the 80s. Can't have a song with any religious overtones to them - God (haha) forbid!)
It would NOT have mattered to us teens whether it was religious or not! As long as it HAD good music, good vocals & a good (usually energetic & uplifting) beat, we were happy! - religious or not religious - (& NONE of the groups specified any God or belief over any other anyways!)
