Steve (who adores Chaka Kahn) clarifies that this tune is much more profound than just a rock song. It's a call to seek an elevated sense of understanding and compassion towards ourselves and others around us - thus referring to this would-be state as 'higher love.' Who better than the amazing Chaka Kahn to sing with on this spiritual song. Great reaction, guys.
Nile Rodgers from Chic on guitar. I love Steve Winwood. His Traffic era awesome. Dear Mr. Fantasy, Empty Pages (you'll like this la), Freedom Rider, Glad, Rainmaker, etc. Forty Thousand Headmen is a really cool Traffic song. This song works so well bc Steve & Chaka are both such powerful singers
Great reaction, guys. It’s hard not to smile while listening to this one. This album was a beast in 1986. Chaka, James Ingram, James Taylor, Niles Rodgers, Joe Walsh, Steve Ferrone, and more. It was sort of Winwood’s comeback album and people lined up to be a part of it.
I saw Steve and Eric Clapton together in concert about 2007. They played Traffic, Spencer Davis, Cream, Blind Faith and solo hits. It was truly amazing!
As a little kid I remember hearing this song and liking it. After hearing Dear Mr. Fantasy on an ESPN ad I got really into the band Traffic. At that time the 80's were just starting to be played on the oldies radio stations. When I heard "Higher Love by Steve Winwood" I couldn't believe it. It goes to show you good artists evolve. He always kept the blues/soul going though.
England's child prodigy--you played him earlier singing "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" at 15 years old (you wondered if it was dubbed!). He plays every instrument, is a top 5 singer of all-time. You might want to listen to his very (very) eclectic work with his band Traffic and also with Blind Faith (with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker from Cream in a short-lived supergroup). Here he is fairly recently alone with an acoustic guitar singing his Blind Faith era song, "Can't Find My Way Home": th-cam.com/video/eoSn2Y-b6wI/w-d-xo.html Enjoy!
One of my favorite artists of all time! The man brings an extremely high quality with his vocals, keyboards, and guitar! There aren’t many that can do that at such a high level!! I am going to see him in a few weeks opening for the Doobies. I am sure he will be incredible, just as he has been every other time I’ve seen him!
Nice! My fav Winwood solo tune. Plus Chaka Khan and Nile Rodgers and more. Just think about Chaka more and it should sound better in the Cutlass. Nice reaction
Hey fellas from ol Spanish Ned. Yeah, this is a banger and Stevie, Nile and Chaka are fantastic. Secret weapons include the great Eddie Martinez on guitar and John Robinson on some mighty drums. John was in Rufus, played for Michael Jackson and on thousands of other hits. Synth bass by Phillipe Saisse who is also a major player.
Steve Winwood is a musical genius. One of my favorite, puts on an amazing show. Fact: album Arc of a Diver (while you see a chance) he wrote every song, played every instrument, recorded and engineered himself at his recording studio at home. His encyclopedia of work with Spencer Davis, Traffic, Blind Faith and solo speaks for itself.
Always astute fellas ... although dressed in 80's garb, this tune has some real essence to it. Great seeing Chaka, anytime. Your Rubber Soul reviews are excellent ... though I know these tunes so well, seeing them work their magic on you two knowledgeable dudes reinvigorates interest ... A blast of fun everytime. Keep going ...
CHAKA!!! I love Steve Winwood to death, but it's Chaka who lights this song on fire and shoots it into the sun. Thank you for the reaction! And P.S. - Yes, your mother knows that's Chaka. Believe me. 😂
Please please oh please react to 'Empty Pages,' by Traffic. Steve kills it on keys, backed by one of the most in-the-pocket bass + drums grooves you will ever hear. You two would dig it.
Through all of Steve Winwoods Bands and solo career he has been consistently great. Chaka Khan added the feminine fire he needed to this great song. Loved the reaction. 👍👍👍
I remember when this came out and Chaka Khan was everywhere. Although I had heard her in the 70's, when I saw her in this video and her videos, I thought she was the prettiest person I ever did see. Beautiful singer, fantastic voice. This song is not a fave of mine, but the lyrics are fabulous and her voice really adds something to it, JMO.
Most definitely Chaka! Love this song and video! If you haven’t already, check out Steve Winwood’s Roll With It (original video) and Back in the high Life - awesome songs! Winwood was involved with the making of records for so many other musicians and singers besides himself. Another favorite of mine is the soulfully sad My Love’s Leavin’ (off of the Back in the High Life album, 1986). The version of this that I actually heard first was a cover by the jazz group Fourplay, featuring Michael McDonald on lead vocals. (2006). I remember my mother was very sick at the time and I would sit in the kitchen with headphones on (when I could) and I’d get lost in the song. When I found out it was a Steve Winwood song, I went back and listened to the original version. I fell in love with both versions. The cover is very true to the original. Winwood’s has more synth in it - Michael McDonald’s is jazzier (especially towards the end) but both versions are fire 🔥
There may not be a better opening line ever…”think about it, there must be higher love”…great review. Still waiting for Dialogue Pt1&2 from Chicago…a song in the same mindset!
Steve Wijnrood went solo in the late 80's and early 90's and released some great music!! Arc of a Diver is a great album and song! thanks La and Che! Nile Rodgers produced and played guitar on this video.
Oh fella's you've blown my socks off again, It's been too long since I pulled this album off my shelf. When the ladies come in with the chorus just floors and inspires me every time . Great pick from a great album
One of the better albums of the 80’s. Also, a true comeback project for Steve that worked, and he deserved. Chaka, for us, was the icing on the cake. 👈✨
Steve knocked it out of the park when he returned in the 80's with "Back in the HIghlife Again." One of the few old geezers who in 2024 can still sing and play without missing a beat. Thanks for doing this guys. Love your channel.
Thanks so much for playing this long forgotten tune! It’s very interesting listening to the words as a 62 year old woman compared to when I first heard it at the age of 14. Keep the tunes coming!
I remember when this album came out. I played it over and over and so glad that Steve Winwood had returned with this gem. The whole album is wonderful. Thanks so much for reacting to this.
80s were good to us. 🎉 Chaka was showing up here and there. ❤ Moving away from rock and disco into pop and our music idols moved with time. We still had metal, hard rock, hair bands, girl power and GREAT music every day, always had music on in my house. Today, I'm not gellin!! 😢
What a talent he was❗ His other bands TRAFFIC and BLIND FAITH were revered by everyone.🎵🎵🎵 " Can't Find My Way Home" by BLIND FAITH is one of the prettiest songs from that ERA ,and covered by so many other bands. This song you're playing now with the funky bass horns, and backup vocals was classic 80's. A Banger then and now❗
Mr Winwood, in my opinion, could sing any genre!! The man can SANG!!😂 As always, fellas, you do not disappoint 👏 Thanks for the excellent reaction 😀 ❤🙏
So .. I just knew the ending lyrics , never really listened to beginnings,,(always dug this song)was just rockin out partying. The two of you have caused me to listen in a new way, songs I have heard 100s of time are refreshed, thx, born in 1964
Steve Winwood has always been a favorite of mine. I loved him back when he was with "Traffic". Then he shows up in "Blind Faith" ..... one of the first "super groups" . Take care....
One of the most talented musicians in decades. And a nice man, too. Coworker's sister was (is?) married to him, but that was 1987 in Memphis. He lived in Nashvegas at the time. Woukd actually play piano/organ at church on occasion. ( should have gotten with Rev Al Green!) Al Green would be an awesome listen, men!
talk about going to CHURCH my dears!!! So sublime....You need to go down the Steve Winwood rabbit hole guys! 'The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys' from Traffic days, and 'Arc of A Diver' from solo days just as an appetizer...he encompasses decades of good music.
J.R Robinson on drums become instantly famous for his drum performance on this track. I believe .the black gentleman wearing the hat on the guitar is also a famous musician/ producer of this era .I can't remember his name .Chaka Khan speaks for herself, what a beautiful women ..
Ok so y'all have to update us on if Mama knows Chaka Khan sings backup in the song. This video came on all the time in the 80's so I knew she sang in it.
I was just dying waiting for you guys to figure out it was Chaka singing. I caught it waaay earlier than you the first time I heard it. Braayng me a higher love.
Steve Winwood has a long history in the music industry. He started with The Spencer Davis Group in the late 60s, Traffic in the 70s, one album with Blind Faith which included Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker, and a successful solo career. In his home studio he recorded ‘Arc of a Diver.’ An album on which he played every instrument.
La & Che, I ❤ you guys. Your joy for music is the reason I watch you guys. Also, doesn’t Steve Winwood just bring the joy? “I can light the night up with my soul on fire. I can make the sun shine, from pure desire.” Spice it up with Chaka Khan! Irresistible. What is better than music? 🫶🤘
One of the great rock and roll voices of all time! He sang hits in the Spencer Davis Group, in Traffic, in the supergroup Blind Faith, and then as a solo artist.
What a great rabbit hole to go down- Steve is SO good. Talking Back to the Night is one of my favorites. Arc of a Diver, Valerie, Roll with It, all bangeres. He really respected Chaka, and asked her to be on the song.
Great song from a great album. Chaka sang background, appeared in the video and inspired Stevie. Perhaps one of the most versatile and underrated musician in second half of 20th century.
Great reaction again from you two lovelies. Steve Winwood is a great singer, cheeky bit of Chaka Khan in there, love her ❤ have you heard of Groove Armada? They have a song with Richie Havens called Hands Of Time its on the film Collateral and i really think you'd like it.
I saw Winwood live in the early 90's. There were 2 drum kits at the back of the stage and at one point he got behind one and did an extended drum set with the other drummer. After a while, I turned to my friends and said they were probably going to segue right into Higher Love. I was right!
Steve (who adores Chaka Kahn) clarifies that this tune is much more profound than just a rock song. It's a call to seek an elevated sense of understanding and compassion towards ourselves and others around us - thus referring to this would-be state as 'higher love.' @@clifton8929 amen Clifton... always wanted to do this song in church
@clifton8929 Great comment. Very thought provoking.
The Stevie Winwood comeback in full swing with the 80s twist.
Chaka. So incredibly beautiful. National treasure ❤
FACTS!!!
Winwood won 1986 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for Higher Love.
This guy does it all, sings, plays piano and a truely great guitar player ❗️❗️
Super Spiritual song. I think of Jesus every time I hear it.
Chaka sang backing vocals. Love this one and Valerie.
Me too!!!
A couple of weeks ago you reacted to The Spencer Davis Group and said the lead singer sounded like Ray Charles. That was a 15 year old Stevie Winwood!
Love Steve's style, admire his career. Arc of a Diver, Valerie, his time with Traffic.
Steve’s “Roll with It” is the only song I remember from my wedding reception (‘89). 💜💜💜
Love Steve in the band Traffic, such a talented guy with a truly unique voice.
I saw Steve and Eric Clapton together in concert about 2007. They played Traffic, Spencer Davis, Cream, Blind Faith and solo hits. It was truly amazing!
