Lovely job VTR. Another vintage toy saved! Repro v original, that's an interesting and a very divisive discussion! Things, like you say, are never black and white. What do you want, a toy that's almost broken but factory 'fresh' or a toy that's been repaired with new parts that make it work. For me, I'm with the latter. You'd certainly be a brave man to do a video on the subject!
Thanks Dez!! 👍 I'd love to have a conversation on repro cause I think it's a broad topic touching on all aspects of collecting. But that conversation has always been focused on pro vs anti repro and as you say it that leads to divisive discussion (and abuse) very quickly! 😎
Cheers Chris! 👍 Yeah, he sounds pretty good considering his age 😎 I'm hesitant to talk about repro but perhaps over time, may get deeper into the discussion! 🤘
Dave! This video was a pure delight. So satisfying to see your restoration project. I was very entertained to watch you work. R2 looks as good as new. Those Jawas could learn a thing or two from you. Five Star Video, my friend ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You'd be surprised! For example, o-ring replacement isn't always welcomed. For some including myself depending on the situation, value history over condition.
Hi dave, i have been watching your vids for a while, its fantastic what u do,the restorations that you do are just great, love the original patina that you keep, and some things just have to be replaced, and thats the way it is......keep up the great work, and i always look forward to a video update👍👍
Great video Dave, and I agree on the repro grey area. It's all about context, you can't just sit in one camp with your fingers in your ears, which seems to be the case with vintage star wars.
Another excellent instalment from the VTR library. Brilliant video as always Dave, love watching these, and 100% the correct decision to change that band! Keep doing what you do my friend 👍
Cheers buddy!! 🤘 Maybe, possibly, perhaps there might be a small chance of doing a repro video in the future! Well, maybe not 🤣 Thanks for the support as always 👍
This is genuinely so relaxing watching this, I’ve often found fixing and repair toys relaxing but tend to only tackle smaller jobs. Why did I never know that they had mini record players in these things lol. Amazing stuff Dave as always Also no harm in replacing the electric band etc, it’s like people going crazy over new o-rings in Gi Joe figures, nothing wrong with it imo etc, for me I’ll rather have a working item or Gi Joe that actually stands etc
Thanks Adam! 👍 Quite a few of them had record players - like the Imperial Troop Transport, KITT etc and yeah, replacement o-rings are no go for some!! All depends on context! 🤘
Thanks Delvian! 🤘 Now, I had to look up the Ship Of Theseus! How have I not known about this before - I've had the same thoughts myself - in particular with classic cars! 👍
An absolutely fascinating video, Dave. Incredibly entertaining to watch and also very relaxing. Very well produced, sir. I would love to have seen what you might have done had you not had yours to use as a template for repair. 😂 And as far as the repro or original parts thing goes, I think you should do whatever you want and other people should just mind their own damned business. It's just toys. Thanks for a great watch and sharing the journey with us on this one. You have way more patients than I do!
Hey Paul!! 🤘 Ha, so what you're saying is you want to see me struggle even more 🤣 I'm pretty sure I would have got there without the reference, but it's surprising how difficult it can be sometimes to re-assemble things. That's why I always take pictures as I'm disassembling! As for repro, I'd love to do a deeper dive video but it's such a divisive subject!! Cheers 👍
Another great restoration, congratulations! I agree that reproduction parts are necessary especially on rubber parts, and if you want the toy to be in full working order and not just a display piece. Some parts are also rare and prices for the original pieces are in a premium, or are very fragile and underengineered. In those cases reproduction parts are a good and affordable option, in my honest opinion.
Interesting restoration video! These record players look like a nightmare to reverse engineer. Good that you had a version near hand that was not disassembled. Looking forward to see how you will restore that other R2 with 3D printed parts! I think that 'spring button' on the record player can certainly be printed.. Wil take some testing to get the right 'spring tension' on the part of the button that acts as a spring. I would start by laying it down on a flatbed scanner (in combination with measuring ofcourse) and trace the contours in my cad program. Than slice the drawing of the piece in half to print without supports. 3d prints can be glued with CA glue. I have printed many buttons and restoration pieces on my machine at home. If I can help out with anything on your restoration, feel free to let me know!
This was a really enjoyable restoration for Gav (@OneEyedYakFace on Instagram). Thanks for watching and your support as always! 👍
What an awesome restoration! 100% agree on replacement parts of and when they make sense. Super excited about the next one! 😉👍🏽
Cheers Gary! 🤘 I've started the research, gonna be a fun project!! 👍

Very cool Dave! Thanks for sharing!
Cheers David!! 🤘
I agree with your decision to replace the rubber band 👍
Thanks! Yeah, I was never gonna leave it running fast!! 😎
Fantastic video yet again Dave. R2 is looking great.
Thanks!! 🤘 Pleased with the result and always fun to learn about a new item. Gav is pleased to have it restored too 👍
Brilliant job, as always!
Thanks Mark! 🤘
Another great one Dave! Keep em coming!
Cheers Flux!! 🤘 Working on the next one already 👍
Love it!
Thanks Adam!! 🤘
Great repair 👍🏼
Cheers Kenny! 🤘
Excellent restoration, saving this r2d2 so we can hear him once again the way it was intended. 100% agreed about your repro parts point of view.
Cheers Chris! 👍 Yeah, he sounds pretty good considering his age 😎 I'm hesitant to talk about repro but perhaps over time, may get deeper into the discussion! 🤘

Hey SteveO!! 🤘 Glad you enjoyed this one! Yeah, you gotta keep an eye on those Jawas 🤣
Dave I think you have the perfect voice for audio instruction manuals. So pleasant when you speak.
Are consumables or perishables really repro? I'm not sure there.
Ha! Thanks GForce! 👍 Funny thing is, I still don't like listening to myself 🤣
You'd be surprised! For example, o-ring replacement isn't always welcomed. For some including myself depending on the situation, value history over condition.

Hey Rick, thanks for the very kind words. Really appreciate that. Comments like this help keep the motivation going. TH-cam can be hard at times!! 👍

Thanks Kev! 👍 I would love to a deep dive on the subject of repo but honestly wouldn't be able to handle the feedback, well abuse 😎
Dave 💪🚬🤠

Brilliant . Looking forward to sandcrawler video.
Thanks Matt! 🤘 Might be a little while before I dig into the Sandcrawler - need to find the time 😎
A lot of work but great results with the restoration of R2D2 Classic. Nicely done, Dave! Sounds good.
Thanks! 🤘 Yeah, he does sound surprisingly good... once slowed down 😎

Really fascinating watch, thanks Dave. Interesting debate about the elastic band - reminds me a little of the ship of Theseus!
Thanks Delvian! 🤘 Now, I had to look up the Ship Of Theseus! How have I not known about this before - I've had the same thoughts myself - in particular with classic cars! 👍
Another masterful repair Dave! Also I am with you 100% on the repro issue. Context is important. Great video mate!
Thanks Nate!! 🤘

If folk are losing their minds over swapping a laccy band out you really all need to get out more!
It's a minefield!! and you're right, I need to get out more, regardless 😎
brilliant stuff
Cheers! 🤘

Thanks Seth!! 🤘 Will definitely take on board your advice and follow up on your messages when the time comes to tackle 3d printing! 👍
I had the Kenner one, until I lost it
😒
Oh no! Scavenged by Jawas long ago 😎
Springs are not your friends?! Springy the Spring Sprite does not approve! See MS3K Spring Fever.
That's brilliant Mark!! 👍 I have never heard or seen Spring Fever before!! 🤣
