I’m watching this, drinking coffee in bed and my legs are twitching involuntarily. Working towards my target of 7 minutes, your content is so inspirational. I’m 60 and have been erging for less than a year.
@@CameronBuchan thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it and I’ll be following your progress too, trailing in your wake, a very long way back 😂
I row for my school, I'm only 13 but all I can think about is Team GB and how much I wana row for my country. As soon as the holiday is over I'm going to be at the gym doing 2k on the ergo and running 5k interchangeably so that I can become the absolute best. You are such a inspiration to me and its amazing to see someone who brings life to the rowing community! Thank you for everything you do!
That's awesome! I'd recommend getting a more structured plan for your training rather than 2k, 5k alternates. It'll help keep the motivation you have going and create more long term success! Good luck
How do you just stand up at the end? For me it feels like I'm breathing through a straw after a 2K. You're a beast. Can tell you weren't overwhelmed by your success, but you got the job done. Don't dwell on the negative, just use the experience to go forward. It's impossible to stay at a constant mental peak, just like it's impossible to remain on a physical peak.
I just bought a concept2. I've watched a few of your video and it's inspiring and helps a bit with motivation. I only get times in like the 2:30s but it's early days, and I think I could get below 2:00 with training. Definitly gonna tune in to see your 2k, as I can only imagine how tough of a challenge it will be, but I wish you the best of luck and know you can do it.
I’ve been rowing for about 5 months. I can’t even pull a 1:30 for 1sec lol. You are a beast. I’m a 52 year old trying to get fit. Thanks for the inspiration
Great work CAM, you truly killed it! Everything was spot-on except your ole' fallback of a finish where you took your legs out of the race and finished with arms pulls only. PB"S will come and go, sometimes when we least expect them, but all are truly hard earned and well deserved, and so was this effort on that erg!! Stay mentally strong and you'll recover for that next race! Who knows, maybe even another PB! "Oh Yeah!"
On it again Cam. This is what we tune in to see, Beast Mode and the training with it. Just getting back onto the Concept2 again with totally crap scores but you really got me aggressive towards hitting my own little rowing targets. Hoping you make GB squad qualification, what happens then? Funding, training, where will you be based etc?
Recently I started rowing on the erg, and dude, I have never, ever been passionate about training as I am now with getting my 2k time down. Also I have never experienced that same excitement and dread before going on erg, nor have I ever been pushed to my limits like this, and this is coming from a former rugby union player.
I was nervous for you watching. Can’t imagine the pressure. Way to perform when the proverbial lights were bright. All the best on the water. Hopefully conditions are speedy!
Been watching your videos for some time always informative and interesting to watch what you are up to that was a awesome ergo time for the 2k I am struggling just to a sub 1:30 for 500m which I have been trying to do for some time hope one day to achieve it I try and learn from your videos I really enjoy the sport of rowing keep it up Cam
Awesome Cam you looked like you had a lot more but with 5k on water to do as well great tactics to do a good time and recover, looking forward to seeing how the 5k goes, inspirational.
Great work! 👍💪 I'm looking forward to tomorrow's episode on the water. (I fell while cycling in France in August, and I've recently started cycling again. You're inspiring me to try to get back on the rowing machine (and eventually in the boat) soon too.)
what is your trainng splits and routines, because im 16 and trying to push my 7.03 time sub 7. I never train so i feel with training i could bring down my time alot
I am really very curious about ‘drag settings’. * Does it matter which drag setting is used in competition, or can each rower choose whichever he likes? Personally, I’m dialled in @ 115 at the moment for training, but I have never competed in indoor erg competition. Thanks so much for your attention, love your videos! and admire your dedication and achievements!!
@@CameronBuchan Thank you! Very much appreciated….it’s a big topic of discussion amongst my friends at the local gym….it’s natural to believe the lower settings make it easier to row a given distance fast, but that’s a bit of an illusion, as your DF videos clearly explain. 138! Omg…I am 202 kilos and 2 metres tall….maybe I’ll get a break as I’m 65 yrs old! But I’m not planning on trying out for the Canadian National team anytime soon lol Cheers Cameron, thanks again
4:48 remember to eat. My Last 2k goal was sub 7:30 and I didn’t eat anything before the 2k. Ended up getting 7:37. Really was a bummer especially since in all my training for the 2k I was able to pass 1:50 average for 500 meters easily.
In something like this is it beneficial in hold back a little because you know you have a 5k on the water the next day or does the system reward the erg more? Liked the race plan, nice job
I think it could reward you to be a bit fresher. Realistically athletes "should" be able to do both high efforts back to back. Also depends where the coach sees you going gif you get selected so water performance or erg might be looked at differently for differtn athletes
The erg doesn't reward the same technique as the water unfortunately. I'd like to say I can seperate the two but realistically each one will feed the other
That was awesome, Cam - congrats on the score and thanks for sharing. You've spoken before about your negative split approach versus flat pacing, how far through a 2k do you think you'd make it holding your average split for the piece 28/29s. . 1250? 1500? Might be a good vid in it
Thanks will. On my pb i was the closest I've been to flat pacing. Think there's a combo with the individual and the training that individual is doing. Technically I should be able to do the same but the middle k would be significantly harder. Not sure if my body is in shape to deal with the extra stress currently
Hi Cam, congrats on your time, very nice effort. I do have a question on technique. On video it looks like your arms are bent at the catch. I always tried to fully extend them so I do not need to hold against the drive from the legs. I wonder whether I am missing a decisive point here. What do you think. Nice content keep it up.
If you can, keep your arms straight. Mine bend as a result of my time spent sweep rowing and my technique deficiencies. Ideally I'd have them straight but erg doesn't really reward the best technique like the water does!
good shit, i've got a 2k coming up after taking a yr off rowing so some of those tips and things should hopefully help cause I'm stressed lol (I'm going for sub 7 which ik isn't crazy for a u18 but I'm a bit pooy on the ergs lol)
Love your videos and have been following the journey for some time. Just watching your technique in this trial, and I was thinking, your arms look like they're partially flexed at the elbow from the catch through the entire stroke. From a physiology point of view, this seems like a slight inefficiency, because you're expending energy to keep a flexed position instead of allowing straight arms to transmit the force from your legs effortlessly through your elbow ligaments. I'm not an exercise physiologist or professional rower or something like that, just have an interest. Anyway, incredible time!
Yeah arms definitely bent. As you'll have seen in the videos over the years it's something I have done most of the time and work on frequently. You might not notice as the camera angle exaggerates the bend but there is a significant difference on the right vs left arm. A result of sweep rowing for many years. It does create a potential inefficiency. Not so much spending more energy but making it harder to connect the handle to the legs. Unfortunately the erg doesn't necessarily reward the greatest technique like the water does.
Yep, you definitely didn’t seem your usual self before starting this 2K - the body language said a lot. The most noticeable difference was the finish when you’re usually “hanging out yer arse”as they would say in Denny & Dunipace, but you got up and walked off! Hope the on the water 5K went well despite a sharp turn - that’s a dumb idea as they are supposed to be testing your speed over a distance not ability to turn a boat which is where you could lose time 🤪
Hmm I felt for you at those last strokes, that would have sucked. The mental toughness you've got to physical pain is incredible though. I think you can't change your bent forearm grip at this point in your career but it seems all the pros have that same grip with slightly tensed/bent arms so I can't criticize as a couch potato garage-rower, but my old coaches always told us so many great pros had some bad habits so yeah who knows maybe it doesn't really matter. I just think legs stronger than arms so bent arms could result in more fatigue than you need to accumulate even if you don't even feel it and hey 6 minutes with kinda bent arms maybe it's not actually fatiguing you at all
Yeah completely my fault but we move. Bent arms for me definitely aren't getting fatigued, the straighter arms do help transfer power differently though. That's where I'd find gains. Work in progress and like you said, hard habit to break!
Great video and an excellent erg piece looking smooth and relaxed. Seems like a very high rating for such a tall man. Might it not be better to rate 32 and reach out for a slightly longer pull?
Great effort, and something I won't be doing again (well I'm 64 so anything under 12min is the dream) 😁😁. You can do better and if you can improve you erg technique ever so slightly you will. In fact you even alluded to this 3 years ago (th-cam.com/video/tR_dfZb9yD0/w-d-xo.html). All the best for the 5K

Would be looked at negatively
