Thank you, I have my mother's house dresses. She passed in 1990. No one wants those dresses, so now I will be making these for holiday presents. Thank you!!!!

This is the greatest idea ever!!! I have made a couple now and I love them. I save a load of scraps, cut them up, my daughter loves to braid the fabric, I use all of my scraps up and organisation for the whole house. I have made small ones for all my sewing bits and large ones for the kids toys, I will never waste any fabric again.

Making a braided rag rug felt overwhelming, but a little basket is the perfect project for this coming weekend. Thank you for sharing your beautiful talents!!!

If you do Not own a sewing machine or you don't use a sewing machine..You can also Hot glue the rows of braids together...Then you can also make your baskets larger....Also if you want to get the circles of the baskets even, try wrapping your braids around a wastebasket....Good Luck....

I have two hooks for hanging baskets which i want to use for hanging braided baskets. They would be lovely for artificial flowers for each season. Also, great gift ideas for special events. Great for doll clothes, teaching kids to organize their stuff and clean up after using. I may even try braided rugs. Haven't seen them since the sixties. I am retired and spend a lot of time at home. I do not watch TV at all but am an internet groupie. Even use Alexa for an assistant. I can entertain myself while I engage in hobbies and YES, it brings my blood pressure down. I like to listen to Joyce Meyer on my CDs and watch her on youtube. Hope to see you braid out on youtube! What a joy that will be for me. I am finally learning how to slow down and smell the roses. Any ideas for braiding decor to put on the walls...like flowers and trees? Let's get creative with nature!!!! How about braiding an inside playhouse or fort for rainy days? You inspired me galore. Thanks!

Yea! I was looking for alternative to making basket with diy cord or wrapping clothes line but need it to be sturdy. I’m going to use old jeans I have in scrap bag for two legs of braid to make it sturdy and my scraps of quilters cotton for third leg to give it the color I want.
Your voice is so great, very smooth. Good tutorial and I will look at your others too.

What a great recycling use of scrap fabrics. This would make a nice doggy bed, of course I would use safe washable fabric to make it so that I can wash it over & over again. Excellent idea, thank you!!

This is amazing! I think its also a good project for a beginner like me. I keep seeing such baskets in shops like target or Marshall's for 40 or 60 dollars and I always wondered how it's achievable (not the stitch but the cloth) realised from the video it's a plait and it's so cool! You made it look so simple 🙌🙌 thanks for the inspiration

I love these baskets! I have made tshirt yarn baskets out of stretchy fabrics (I used an old mattress cover too - great tip to prevent those to go to landfill) and I planned to also crochet some old bed sheets I cut up. But I didn't like the look of it, but maybe braiding them like you have done would be the solution?

Couldn't you sew them by hand (like old-fashioned braided rugs made from wool)? Love this tutorial... very easy to follow! Thank you!!

  • @butterflytraveller

ok. So I tried my first rug but it warped into a basket by mistake and I broke 4 needles in the process and jammed the machine, but I am happy with the results although stressful! I tried again and gave up half way but made a very cute mini oblong mat. Going to try again tomorrow. Maybe my braids were too think?

Thanks for this tutorial! I have hand-sewn a couple small baskets but will use the sewing machine (with a needle for leather - good tip!). Also, instead of braided twine, I've made twisted twine; it holds together very well (I just knot the end loosely when I've cut off the amount I use) and tends to look a bit more "slim-lined" (neater)...

Can I ask how many yards it took to make the big baskets? I’ve started braiding all the old clothes I have but was wondering how much I needed lol.

Megan, thanks so much for this video. Your baskets are lovely and I can't wait to make one. I have been learning how to do toothbrush rugs. Just made my first one, which actually came out as a toothbrush bowl. Haha. I am excited to try this method of braiding and sewing the strip to itself on the sewing machine. I'm trying to use up my old scraps of quilting fabric!
PS Make more videos. You are amazing.

My machine's on the fritz, so I've been trying to sew a braided basket by hand. It looks okay so far, but my fingertips are wrecked! Trying to get used to using thimbles, which help a bit. So fun creating though, despite the pain! ;)

I've been making one of these and a piece of advice is to make sure your fabric is no wider than one inch when you're braiding. I got lazy-ish with this and then when I went to sew the braids, the fabric was much too thick for my machine. I had to unbraid a bunch of my braids and cut down the fabric.

I love this!! Thank you for the video :) I am making my braid currently, but am wondering - when I go to make my basket, if my braid is too long, how should I finish off the basket? Just slice my braid and sew the ends??

Anyone know how to prevent them warping? I’ve tried 3 times and I can’t get the bottom to be flat, it turns up immediately even though I’ve tried multiple tensions and I don’t pull, it’s driving me crazy bc they are sooo cool and I just want them to be flat and big! Lol. I keep making minis bc they turn up to much and my daughter steals them for her american dolls lol!
