  • On my trip exploring Cumbria, my friend and guide, Robert Croser, has taken me to Lowther Castle.
    Lowther Castle is a country house in the historic county of Westmorland, which now forms part of the modern county of Cumbria, England. It has belonged to the Lowther family, latterly the Earls of Lonsdale, since the Middle Ages.

    As a Lowther, I have prints of this castle on my walls and have visited it on occasion. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.

    £4,000 a week in 1870 was £467,000!!! (According to the web!)
    Great place, I can imagine that to avoid death taxes meant that the earls had to take the roof off.
    Back in the 1940s / 50s, the NT didn’t have the cash to take on such a building sadly

      I did enjoyed wondering around this lovely building. We did ask the girls doing the strimming to pause for ten minutes, which they did, although started at the end.

    My grandmother decends from the lowther family. I was told the contents were sold and direct decendants used the money to buy mines in South Africa and Western Australia. Big disapointment because the castle is way cooler. Such is life.

    Amazing sad story of rack and ruin. Thank you for the tour. And hmm. Highclere? I’m just not so sure. Maybe there needs to be a Lowther Castle BBC on the life and times of the 5th Earl. They could fully restore the ruin?

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No - not as grand as Highclere, but nevertheless an impressive building..

    How does one get an 'entitlement' of nearly half-a-million a week??? Where did the dosh come from??? (and who was being fleeced to make it?)
    Great story as ever Robert, about a remarkable fellow and his remarkable mansion. Today, possibly far more interesting in its current state with it's remarkable back-story ..?

      I rather like it in the ruined state. I am sure if they restored it it would be less attractive, knowing how they work these days with new fangled ideas.

    This is the first place you should go when you get your drone......the second is the tree in the Gap at Hadrian's Wall if you can keep from getting in trouble---again.
    The third is that magnificent Church sitting all by itself in the Romney Marsh.

    • @RichardVobes
