  • The Fairfield Horseshoe from Ambleside is one of the most classic and popular rounds in the Lake District National Park and it is easy to see why. In good weather the route offers wide open views and multiple Wainwrights. It is incredibly rewarding!

I know this is an older vid. But I've just watched it (Again) as I'm doing this route next weekend & can't wait . Appreciated your soothing voice guiding us through the adventures we can later follow and enjoy .Your passion and completion I will use as inspiration to make sure I complete the route when it gets tough
Also when you talked about feeling safe and secure and home !! Wow your the 1st person I've heard articulate my feelings when I'm in the mountains . I hear lots of positive talk about hiking but not many mention safe and secure and noware on earth makes me feel more safe and secure and connected to nature

Top tip. When you get back to Ambleside, order a pint in The Golden Rule. Then force yourself not to take a sip for five minutes. If you're hot and tired it sounds impossible but you will then down it in two or three gulps and it will be the most memorable pint you ever drink. A fitting end to a brilliant hike.

So much fun to see a video of a place I've been! I had a chuckle at your parking situation. My husband and I were there in 2019, and we parked somewhere near Rydal Water. The parking machine only wanted coin money and we didn't have any! We scrambled through all our pockets and the cubbies in the car to find enough to pay so we could walk along the water. Lesson learned! Beautiful walk (those descents were insane!) I hope to return some day.

Great video Abbie, myself and 3 of mates got lost in atrocious conditions upon fairfield horseshoe, low cloud, heavy rain, strong gust of wind, the like of which I've never experienced before or since, you could not breath, march 2006, only my second fell, the day before we did Helvellyn, in glorious conditions, we survived the horseshoe, a great experience, however we learned to respect the fells the hard way lol, been going up the fells two to three times a year every year ever since 👍

Happened to us last August. We got lost on Fairfield and ended up on St.Sunday's Crag in the fog. Basic schoolboy error. We decended into Glenridding in glorious summer heat. Had to taxi back Ambleside. We had forest the horse shoe 4 times as well.

Lovely hike Abbie! We recognised a lot of those fells as we’ve hiked Helvellyn & done the 10 mile deepdale horseshoe which climbs Hart crag then traverses across Fairfield crag then on to St Sunday. We filmed both hikes and love that part of the national park.

Agree so much! When out in nature, it's the best time to let go all judgments. No competition (unless you're running a race I suppose!) and let all the self-incriminations drop away too. Just be! Lovely video. The green trees and hills look like a storybook!

I was just thinking about it when you mentioned the Fairfield Horseshoe Fell Race! Many years ago I did it - got round in 2 hours 14 minutes (it sounds inconceivable to me, so Lord knows what it sounds like to anybody else!) and I was well at the back of the field! A couple of weeks ago we got to the top of Helvellyn - first walk up a mountain in nearly two and a half years and first with my newish artificial hip (performed magnificently - shame about the other bits of me that haven’t been replaced!). Very sore legs meant descent was slower than glacial but made it (eventually) and finished walking on fumes. Fortunately car was parked free, gratis and for nowt in a lay by, so no panic stricken dash to avoid a parking ticket! Which was just as well!

Well that was a nice way to start the day! What a wonderful day out in the Lakes. This hike has been on my list forever and I really enjoyed the journey you took us on - I'll get to it one day...
(I hear you about the parking. Ugh. I hate being rushed by a parking deadline! We have a few parks near Vancouver that have gates which are locked after hours and we've been caught having to race to get back to the car so we don't get locked in - or worse, trigger an unnecessary search.)

    • @nicholasmaycock267
      @nicholasmaycock267 ปีที่แล้ว

Why they can't have pay as you leave parking instead of upfront charges beats me. The technology is there and it makes it so much easier as you don't need to guess how much time you need or having to rush to meet a deadline.

So much enjoyed this video, took me back to when we did this a number of years ago (in the reverse direction). You said in the video that you were planning some more Lake District walks, have you ever considered doing the Gable Traverse? It is a hugely interesting explore of the various crags and pinnacles on the south face of Great Gable, which I think you might find challenging!

After listening to how you feel about the Lake District, and nature in general, have you ever thought about moving there?
I'm from Kent, and have just decided to move to Whitehaven, to be nearer to the Lakes for lots of adventure, and just a better quality of life! It also means Scotland isn't a massive drive away either 😊 All of our hobbies on the doorstep!

Damn, I was smiling through this whole thing. You got some of the best vibes! Even more excited than ever now after living in megacities since 2010, I'm utterly desperate for my trip there in a week or so! How difficult would you say it would get in rainy conditions (which I think it will be), given all that boggy stuff at the end? Better to avoid the horseshoe entirely in that case?

Magnificent views but for someone coming from the country which didn't razed almost all of its forests to the ground - these hills and mountains look so heartbreakingly barren. It's like a enormous monument of destruction and unwillingness to share place with wildlife and Nature.
That is probably the only thing that puts me off from visiting most of the places considered iconic in the UK.It's not the innocent beauty to me, but the land ravaged and left to die.
I'm so happy some people start to understanding it and rewilding attempts start getting traction, namely in Scotlant.
