I met Roger in Nashville when my Uncle, Fred Foster, and I went to a person’s home where musicians occasionally gathered. Roger came in and in the course of conversation said he had recorded a song that day that was going to be a big hit. He said if it wasn’t a hit he was going to pack it up and go to Texas. Someone said get your guitar and sing it for us. He went out to his car, came back with his guitar, sat down and played and sang “King of the Road”. We all applauded. My Uncle Fred turned, looked at me and said “That’s it-the one Roger has been looking for; he won’t be going to Texas”.
I baled hay with a grandson of Otis Redding, who told me many stories of Otis’ touring days. stories of the ole heroes of the music industry get around & got around because people were impacted by them on a large scale. too many stories have been lost or held to secrecy, too
I'm now 64 yrs old. I am familiar with this song. I love it. You've heard it from Roger Miller himself before it was recorded and aired on radio. That's amazing! ❤Philippines.
I knew Roger very well. NEVER has anyone made me laugh so hard. AND Yet, He had an extremely sensitive heart. I NOW KNOW the funniest People have the Biggest hearts, i.e., hearts of GOLD. Joan Rivers is another one.
ROGER MILLER, wrote song for so many artists, and yet sang his own music, he was one of the THE GREATEST WRITERS AND SINGERS OF ALL TIMES!!!😊❤👍🇺🇲🇨🇱🏴☠️
@Allen Elman, you are so fortunate to have known Roger. He is one of the few celebrities I wish I could have met and gotten to know. I'd just love to know what made him tick, and hear some late night stories from him. I was lucky enough to meet and have a chat with Kris Kristofferson before a gig a few years ago but I never had the sense to ask him about Roger. One of my few regrets!
I've read some of the funny things he said and I never forget them. Police Officer: Can I see your driver's license? Roger: Sure. Can I play with your gun? Friend: Did you hear? So-and-so was born again. Roger: That must have been hard on his mother Roger: My education was Korea, Clash of ’52 Any thoughts of writing a book about your friendship with Mr. Miller?
Roger was a natural songwriter with a lot of heart. The fact that he was so popular is a testament to how different the country and the world were back then. The stuff that sells now is heartless and angry. Hopefully that’s changing with younger artists.
Find me a talent like Roger Miller in the here and now. You're liable to be looking a while, and you might find that you're looking in vain ... because the man was a one-off and no mistake, as well as being a singular treasure. We miss you, Roger.
Social commentary through lyrics was super intense back then in 68. The reality behind personal pride embodied in the song "Husbands and Wives" and "Mr. Business Man" by Ray Stevens was as strong as anything coming from the Beatles or Dylan.
They are hilarious and I think I love the fact they are opening getting sloshed on tv, in a classic fashion though. People don't have they subtlety and coyness nowadays.
The whole drunken bit was just that. It was an act. Dean Martin was a serious performer. Roger Miller was a genius. I miss this caliber of artistry. I am only 54 years old and I am bored stiff with todays so called talent.
I am 63 and get bored stiff too when I watch the so called music during the Oscars, the Emmys, and the Super Bowl halftime. And most everywhere else these days.
Roger Miller was the definition of a "Stinker"! Well - that made 2 of a Kind right there. Had to be one of the best liked guys in the business - was on everyone's friends list - from Waylon, Wille to Dean and Frank - The man has that "Charles Groden look" (slight smile - eyes and mouth - You just know he's been up to no-good) The very kind of man that I was always attracted to - and BFFs w as well - God Bless those Stinkers - Life would have just stale w/o em! ;-)
Well they may look similar but Roger’s schtick at its worst was still a lot funnier than Charlie Grodin at his best haha! Seriously though as many times as I’ve seen Grodin on Johnny Carson, he’s not that funny at least insofar as improv type-of stuff goes..decent actor though sure I’ll give him that.
Show me a late model star and it's lots of flash and little real talent. Thank God for creating these two giant talents and personalities. The latest generation is mostly lots of flash and little musical talent. Rest in peace Gentleman and God Bless. Phoenix Arizona 1222 hrs MST 26 August 2024
Easy one! It does in-fact mean syrup. I heard this one all the time growing up. My parents, who were young adults when "Dang Me" was released, said it all the time. So did their friends. All of whom had grown up in East Tennessee during the 50's and 60's. Incidentally, Miller was starting his career out of Nashville in the mid 50's, fresh from the Army and Korea. If I had to venture a guess, I'd wager it was a term Miller picked up from his time living in Tennessee
Roger Miller is One of the all time greats.
+Dan Hawley You got that right. Wish we had this kind of talent today.
+Dan Hawley I agree. So underrated.
Beide sind Legenden. Ruht in Frieden Dean Martin und Roger Miller
So true

🎶it's a small world after all🎶
But that is legitimately awesome

@@madzzzporschetry really hard to assume that not everybody is lying. And then write your comment based on believing that what you just read is true.
It's 2020 and still watching them.. They're good together..acting very natural...two very talented men...rip to both.
This is when Stars were truly shining
Can't get this kind of entertainment anymore, love them both
Freakin Brilliant! This type of talent is just gone from the world today.
Thanks for posting.
yqw Matthew :)
Matthew Stavrowsky Brad Paisley is close to a Roger I think.
I knew Roger very well. NEVER has anyone made me laugh so hard. AND Yet, He had an extremely sensitive heart. I NOW KNOW the funniest People have the Biggest hearts, i.e., hearts of GOLD. Joan Rivers is another one.

With Dean Martin, it's a wonder they didn't do Chug-A-Lug.
too obvious
Rude and uncalled for they were more than " drunks "
@@dfangirl72 Oh fuggetabout it! Great song and great talent, both, huh? You can't say that Chug-a-lug isn't a great tune, can you?
love these clips brings back the real laughs love so many of these
This is so Great so Great !!!!
So effortless on H&W. A truly terrific singer on top of his other gifts.
these two mustve shared a drink or six. Roger was extraordinary. Two of them pure natural talent
They are hilarious and I think I love the fact they are opening getting sloshed on tv, in a classic fashion though. People don't have they subtlety and coyness nowadays.
They weren't drinking. Dean Martin never drank in public.
Roger was brilliant but Dean also had a much wider range that people give him credit for.

That's true. The booze in Dean's glass was actually apple juice.

I love the Rip van Winkle bit. No idea why - but it is my favourite bit of the sketch.
Thank you for uploading this video. I like both Roger Miller and Dean Martin!

No truer words ever sung...
Two way cool guys
WONDERFULLY DONE
Dean had a big hit covering ‘King of the Road.’
Great humor !!!
they were both very different kind of genius.
missed.
HUSBANDS & WIVES is a very under-rated song.
Great song! Ringo Star'cover was very pretty too.
Glen Campbell, Ray Stevens, and Roger Miller were red hot in 68.
2 greats.:)
Love Roger Miller ❤
The man was a genius
RIP both guys. Miss you.
Roger was the rooster in Disney's Robin Hood. His music is magical. He seemed like he was a good guy IRL.
timeless legends
Love That Chocolate 😁💖😂
my two favorite voices from childhood. both boozers from all get out
SeaFoamGuy 94 actually Dean Just acted drunk, in reality he never drank.
Dean never drank. Just an act
Both so natural.
2 real origionals!!
I liked the way he fixed his hair after removing his hat; he didn't want a little hat to ruin his image, Roger Miller's good face.
Songs about relationships from that era tended to be superficial. What he sang there might have hit the nail on the head.

"It's been a good year for paint thinner, hasn't it?"
Ha ha busta gut....
I want to try their chocolate milk now.

Been a good year for paint thinner.
This was on TELEVISION, people!
I still remember this song parodied for decker hot dogs.
Likr hear Roger Mill sing.
OOH YEAH MY PARENTS KANE KEKE OUR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS REMEMBER THEM FUNNY 😂
I was born too late.
They don't make 'em like they used to!
the plug hilarious
Anyone know what year this was?? Huge fan from 2024. Dad was a fan of him as well
"...better than any song Stokely Carmichael ever wrote!" Hilarious!
Roger Miller fishing and having Egg Nog. Dean joined him. Nag Me singing his song. Two people is the name of this song. Husband and Wife's.
ACTUALLY MARTIN DID NOT DRINK LIKE HE PRESENTED HIMSELF...A JOKE THAT ISN'T SO FUNNY TODAY...
great talent.ok roger what is surpel?
+bob malone A bit of creativity I guess. He's said "maple surple/surpel" instead of "maple syrup". Hope that makes sense?
+bob malone I think he meant syrup but surple rhymed with purple so maybe he made up his own word
Surple...The only word I ever heard that rhymed with purple.

Karl Nelson thx for the history
I just realized, if Roger Miller was born in the 90’s he’d probably be a well known TH-camr. Especially with how effortless that plug was.
roger miller was the robin williams of music
A side of Roger Miller I have never seen.
when wasnt Dean hammerd?
Why did Deano mention Stokely Carmichael??
Too drunk to pronounce Hoagy?
Hoagy Carmichael play on words.
weird he is smoking a cigarette on a late night show
Roger's voice was even cooler than Dean's.
uhhhhhh i don't like ti
Such wonderful men. Effortless entertainers
love these clips brings back the real laughs love so many of these
