How I Learned to Draw from Imagination: Drawing with Form

  • In this tutorial I show how I do form manipulation in drawing. This skill is a major building block in drawing from imagination as it enables one to break down what they see/imagine into simplified forms which they can easily manipulate to taste.

Just started doing some form practice because I realized I was suffering from a lack of fundamentals. Your lines are so damn clean man, will try this out today!

Great video, I've been doing these exercises for 2 days and I already feel more at ease with drawing/thinking in 3D and manipulating forms. Can't wait to have more coming! My goal is to make a comic, so these skills are a huge help.

Thank you for sharing. I just recently experienced lack of knowledge with form and it resulted in a lot of erasing and repositioning. This video and some practice will really help to get the form and lines correct.

Took a look. Seems like you're putting your channel together again. Good luck. You've got some insane hand control. Im at level one right now just trying to keep my hand from shaking when i make a line. I'll get done with a sheet of lines and realize I'm squeezing the heck out of my pencil. Dexterity has just never had to be a focus in my life.

I would say wat is working for me currently, is that i copy the line art of something but i imagine every line before i lay it, try to even imagine multiple lines and compare the shape it produces to the reference, try to memorise it, and lay it, i can still get it wrong, but its getting slowly better, i compare the angel of the lines to the corners of the paper as well, which ever is closest, i dont think u can imagine a drawing entirly as a begginer its easier to start with just lines and shapes, once u commit the face shape for example to mind u can imagine it on paper instead of just single lines.

@@MarshMakesComics If I draw a cross on a plane its simply for showing the orientation of the plane. If I was to imagine a box around the whole volume I'd use those arrows to guide how I draw the bottom and side planes. It's just helpful for me personally. The arrows are to show the direction that the 2d shape has been extruded to create the final volume.
