    i’ve never liked how hollywood kept watering down cinderella’s character, the whole point isn’t that she wants to be famous or marry a prince to become a princess, it was so she had one night of freedom from ball away from her abusive family. but now she’s portrayed of a spoiled brat who has a mean stepmom, idk it just bothers me.

      This comment 100%."This is a feminist take on cinderella" oh i'm sorry, was the desire to escape from an abusive household and managing to maintain a kind heart in the face of adversity not feminist enough for you?

      For an expansion on that last line I suggest The Take's "Cinderella" review. She was not a weak, fragile & spoiled girl - she wanted to escape abuse and took the only way out she could. The prince didn't "save her" she saved HERSELF.

      That's a perfect sum up of the Cinderella character that I love. The 1952 animated Cinderella is still my favorite, even Disney and other companies f the original idea up.
      Mini rant: A few years ago there was a Hallmark Ornament of Cinderella holding a soap bubble like in the sing sweet nightingale scene, problem is THERE WAS A SCENE OF HER AND THE PRINCE DANCING IN THE-MINI BUBBLE , not here reflection, like she was longing for him but the Sweet sing nightingale happened BEFORE she knew anything of the prince or ball. SHE DOENST CARE ABOUT GETTING MARRIED, SHE CRIED AND FLUNG HERSELF ON THE GARDEN BENCH IN THE MOVIE BECAUSE SHE WAS AT HER BREAKING POINT not because she wanted to meet the prince. 🙄

    • @TheEmerald97
      @TheEmerald97 3 ปีที่แล้ว +200

      Exactly I hated the prince's characterization because it was so shallow. Especially giving him a "I choose Me" line. It felt meaningless cause what he wanted was to just drink and foxhunt with the boys. It had way less weight than Cinderella. Like if you want that phrase to have meaning, make sure when ya use it it always has weight behind it. If someone tries a feminist take, on a story like this, I hope they make the men competent. You don't have to make men dumb to make women smart. It's annoying, sexist, and frankly overdone.

    • @dreamer24-79
      @dreamer24-79 3 ปีที่แล้ว +125

      You've all echoed my thoughts exactly; I'm so frustrated with the "stupid" male love interests, it does feel sexist and pretentious, like it insults our intelligence somehow. I'm also tired of the "I'm not like my dad" trope, which seems to be the only character arc they can give to the male lead; all the relationships feel so contrived and unbelievable.
      Even Ella Enchanted did the romance better, and it wasn't perfect. At least Charmont wasn't instantly smitten with Ella; he did find her attitude refreshing, but their affection for each other was gradual and natural (albeit still in a short timeframe). They complimented each other; Ella in particular believing that Charmont could be a good king and make a positive impact for the kingdom, and he felt that was possible with her in his life. They actually make change happen, which wouldn't be possible if Ella made Charmont abdicate the throne for her.
      Anastasia is even better; that film is proper female empowerment, with great chemistry between the leads and brilliant character development. Dimitri is charming (and most importantly, smart!), the relationship is equal and believable. At least we'll always have the classics.

    Barbie's "The Princess and The Pauper" did a better job of Ella and the prince's character arcs in this production. Big ol plot hole: the magic at the ball was supposed to make her unrecognizable to everyone but the prince. How did the queen recognize her without it?

    • @TheEmerald97
      @TheEmerald97 3 ปีที่แล้ว +138

      That annoyed me so much. They made it a point to say and show it only worked for the prince. So it shouldn't have worked for the queen. They could've fixed it by saying only, the prince and the queen. Or have her find out it was Cinderella by having the prince tell her, "the dress my sister is wearing is by Ella's designs". I feel like they forget their own rule and just hoped no one would notice.

    • @CazuhLynn
      @CazuhLynn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Imagine, instead of blabbering like an idiot towards the queen, Ella had been humble instead and said it wasn't *her* dress because she would have never been able to make this by hand (because it was, in fact, made by magic and she had said to the fab godmother that it would never work before the spell. So why wouldn't she go with it? She designed it, yes. But it wasn't *made* by her. Instead of the blatantly girl-boss characterization, this might have actually given her depth.).
      Then later, the prince would turn out to be the one telling the foreign queen that Ella designed the dress, as proof that he supports her, because he was the only effing soul to be able to clarify that as he was the only exception to the spell.
      Cherry on top of it all if he actually wanted the throne and was good at ruling. That would have made it so much more impactful. (though I did enjoy the sister character a lot more than anyone else on the movie. But they could have had a pretty good sibling rivalry too, with her being always on eye-level and yet still getting ignored because, in the end, she's just a girl). It was pretty clear from the beginning that he in fact did not really want to rule and that his sister is a better choice. So it was the "easy" solution for this movie to have him give up the throne and spend his days with Ella, which made it all the more obvious. No real conflict imo.

    no, but actually, everything you disliked about this movie is exactly what I hated about it too
    *the costumes*: like you said, super historically ambiguous and very disjointed (and super hideous)

    *the dialogue*: truly terrible

    *the story*: trash, especially because in whatever ambiguous medieval time they live in, Cinderella could absolutely have had a dressmaking business with ZERO ridicule because dressmakers were usually low or middle class women... so...

    Once, just once, I want an adaptation where the dynamics are flipped, and Cinderella is the awkward out of touch one, and the stepsisters are the beautiful and smart ones.
    And instead of destroying her dress, the stepmother actually lets her go, so she can completely humiliate herself in front of the prince with her clumsiness and tacky dress.
    The prince is the complete opposite, but instead of making up for or overlooking her odd quirks, together they make the quirks work for them. Like if she trips while they're dancing, he turns it into an elaborate dance move. That kind of thing.
    But the twist here is that instead of the night being magical, it's a nightmare because now she's starting to feel everything she was told growing up, about how embarrassing she is, and runs away when she finally can't take it anymore.
    Instead of using the slipper, the prince requests she show up at the palace for a dance.
    Why this is genius: all he girls that show up actually dance beautifully, including the stepsisters, so he KNOWS it's not her.
    Instead of before the ball, the fairy godmother shows up when Cinderella's hiding herself away, to show her a different perspective of the ball. Specifically, what the prince actually thought of her, and how he saw her, klutz and all.

    • @Celsiusing
      @Celsiusing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hope3290 Hello. I've been trying to understand what this girlboss concept is about. Well, I'll probably look it up later. I also want to understand how it comes into this generic movie, though. I respect your opinion and don't think I have it all figured out!
      Right now to me, all Cinderella did in this was want to be a designer more than marrying the prince she saw twice. I can't say the prince dropped everything for her, because he didn't feel like being the king in the first place and only truly wanted to after thinking it could lead to her being his wife. He'll probably still be rich and maybe even find something he wants to do.
      Also, I don't know how the movie specifically fits into wanting women to participate in the same crappy systems men do (the following is most likely a misunderstanding by me). Should women only participate in the better systems? This doesn't seem like equality. Maybe the issue was that she wasn't making it better for everyone regardless of gender? But this doesn't seem to be what you're saying.
      If the actual point is for women to be able to create their own systems or something, then Cinderella wanted to go work under a queen doing what she always wanted to do, and the princess is preparing to be queen (she won't be able to do whatever she feels she needs to at first, but of course hurdles are still expected). Cinderella did want to show women all around the world that she could follow her dreams, but that's cheesy at worst.
      The Cinderella in this movie just doesn't seem to have enough going for her in my opinion to think that her attitude related to her "woman success" (or whatever the girlboss term is about) is out there. She just seems... normal.
      Ah, wait. All I saw of the movie was from this review. Oops.

    Ella Enchanted was another take on the Cinderella story that also took heavy historical liberties, like the stepsisters having boyband posters of the prince and the characters going to high school. 10:08 brave of this movie to try and tackle the contemporary and relevant feminist issue of whether women should be allowed to own shops
    I also wish that we, as a culture, explored Cinderella as an abuse story a bit more. She was abused, neglected and put down by her stepmother and stepsisters from a very young age. The thought that victims of abuse need to somehow "safe themselves" is offensive to me. My grandmother was pretty much Cinderella growing up (eerily similar story) and my grandfather married her and took her away from that home life. Why should she be a "girl boss" or whatever? The fact that my grandmother, and Cinderella too, managed to continue to be a positive influence on other people's lives and broke that cycle of abuse, that's more than admirable enough. Stop blaming victims for not being able to safe themselves.
    (in a tangent to that, well meaning but often misplaced efforts of -especially corporate- feminism, usually confuse celebrating femininity with making the feminine more (traditionally) masculine. Those can and should exist too of course and especially in the early days of feminism, they were necessary, but why shouldn't there be more of a focus on the feminine too? Rather than women adjusting their attitude to "A Man's World TM", us changing the world to suit us more)

    A fantastic Cinderella adaptation that I’ve loved since I was little is The Slipper and the Rose. It was made in the 70s and luckily the whole thing is on TH-cam! It’s a proper musical with original songs, beautiful cinematography, and a creative take on both the overall storyline and the fairy godmother (who travels around helping other fairytale characters). There’s no jarring dialogue and the costumes are 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 The stepmother is appropriately cruel and - unlike this movie - you really feel how Cinderella’s life became a desolate one after her parents died. There’s also something extra magical about the use of practical effects and clever camera tricks to do the transformations, given the lack of cgi 🥰
    Oh! And another wonderful 1970s adaptation is Tři oříšky pro Popelku, or Three Wishes/Nuts for Cinderella. It’s a Czech movie that’s also fully uploaded onto TH-cam with English subs. This one isn’t a musical, and instead of going the fairy godmother route it uses the fairytale version where Cinderella gets three acorns, each of which represents a wish for her to use in a different situation. The actress’s portrayal of the character is so cute and sassy (not in a cringey way) and her dress for the ball is GORGEOUS - what I love about that scene in particular is that because of the lack of any sort of spell to hide her identity, she instead wears a veil in order to prevent people from recognising her.

      @@Manka__Kasha Omg yes!! The dynamic between the Prince and his two friends was great. Plus I love the King and Queen's banter because they obviously love each other! In other versions there's either no Queen at all (dead) or their relationship seems to be completely non-existent. I think the ending is so cute as well when they're busy riding off into the distance while his teacher shouts at him for missing his lessons - it really pushes home that they're just a couple of teens. It's a complete contrast to other versions where the Prince and Cinderella are grown adults and it doesn't REALLY make sense that the Prince hasn't been married to anyone yet.

    If this was supposed to be the middle ages, or ... whatever ages... then after the princess became the queen, she would eventually have to kill her brother and Cinderella since abdicated or not, he still was the rightful heir to the throne. And him being alive meant instability, plots and unrest.
    So the way they ended the movie - the prince would either die by his sister's supporters hands or... he would be taken as hostage by that queen Tatjana who would probably want something from the prince's family. I mean she admitted killing a king, so kidnapping a neighboring kingdom's prince, that's easy.

I'm 24 and need a cane to get around and so many people who I don't even know will ask about it or think I don't really need it and movies doing that and saying "yeah this character doesn't need it they're faking" do the opposite of help

    You know what would be an interesting Cinderella adaptation? If they did live-action version of its source material. The true source material. Supposedly the premise of Cinderella actually originated in China. There is an old animated version that you can find on TH-cam.

    I find it funny that in an attempt to make Cinderella more "inclusive" and "feminist", she just comes off as a whiny brat who just gets a fairy show up and help her for no reason. At least we can believe the Disney animated one was a nice person. Also:
    "'Your Highness' was the man who's blood I spilled to take this crown."
    Okay, and? That would still make you "Your Highness", so idk what the point of that line was except to be cringy.

    Here's another one: Cinderella's whose dynamic with her step family is supposed to be that they make her do everything around the house, but we see the step family THEMSELVES doing work and hanging clothes, and seem to allow her to take all the time she wants to make her dresses.

    When I saw that the mice were 3 B list british comedians I knew the director was a brit and I knew it was gonna suck. Plus that toothy blonde who wanted to marry her is also a B list british comedian. They are all far less annoying than James Corden though, I don't know anybody who likes him so I am astounded at how much work he gets.

    It’s so jarring to listen to everyone else singing Broadway style and then Camilla comes in with her pop style voice that has weird pronunciation and way too many vocal runs. It’s really difficult to listen to when in contrast with everyone else’s stable belting. It doesn’t fit the time period or setting and totally ruins any emotional investment.

    My top three cinderella adaptions for story and costumes will always be:
    1. Lily James
    2: Whitney Houston’s
    3: Ever after
    Why? They focused on actual plot and character development. The singers (for the musical adaptations) were talented and their talents were utilized.
    The princes were ones we were rooting for because he listened to Cinderella and respected her viewpoints. They kind of were the Mr. Darcy’s of the Cinderella world. They were flawed men who eventually redeemed their mistakes and earned the women’s affections. They grew.
    This film did none of that.

    Thanks to all the commentary videos, I don't have to watch this adaptation of Cinderella. I didn't even know that Camilla's an actress. I don't know, the essence of Cinderella is gone- seems like Cinderella's kindness, charisma, and inner beauty doesn't shine in this retelling, which sucks. I have always considered Cindy as one of the strongest princess characters ever. Ironically, it seems like she's lost that inner strength.

    I love how sophia crave the death for our entertainment... I'm so traumatized with this movie, like---why another remake of cinderella in first place??? There are thousands of them out there... wich will bring to my next point: if the movie wanted to be so revolucionary with a new (unecessary) reboot: why the people behind this casted camila cabello? because her body/phisical apparence is a standart in general... maddie baillio (who portraited one of the stepsisters) could have been the title charcter or they [producers] could have hired a disabled actress to be cinderella even... the possibilites were huge! I respect camila's work and i think she gave her best considering she ain't an actress, but as a disabled person I feel so frustered when they could represented me and many other girls/children inside of my community using a classic story like this... this is really sad

    I agree with you on a lot of fronts about this movie. It's way too ham fisted, and they shove the message. I think they should've done some changes.
    1. If we're going to have royalty changing rules at whim, then Cinderella never has to choose. The prince can have the king let her go and just send along a royal knight to go with her.
    2. Cut James Corden's jokes or reign him in! His character wasn't funny, just crude in a stupid way that takes you out of the emotions of the scenes.
    3. Make the Princess less of a joke! With feminism as your theme, ya shouldn't treat her being Queen as a joke for most of the movie. Play it more seriously, let her getting the crown have equal meaning. The way they did it comes across as it's a pity win, done out of convenience.
    4. Do the Stepmother's backstory earlier. If ya still want that moment with Cinderella then have Cinderella not know, but let us the audience know before her.
    5. Bring back the farmer dude, it seemed like he was having chemistry with one sister but they completely drop that. Also feminism doesn't mean girl boss, it means equality, having freedom to choose what ya want. So Having the sister, choose to be married to someone shows that aspect better. Because getting married to someone and being a homemaker isn't always a bad thing. Heck you can reverse it, and have him be a house husband. Because that breaks the old stereotype of men must be out working and women stay home.
    6. Give the prince more ambition! Seriously him choosing to go with Cinderella is not as meaningful, compared to her, because he had no ambition to be king. He just wanted to hang with his bros. So give him more ambition so it's as much of a choice for him as her.
