  • Orly Shani is showing you how to make your very own kaftan. She got the idea from watching an episode of ÒReal Housewives of Beverly HillsÓ when they went to visit Dubai and all the ladies were modeling their own kaftans. When it comes to the fabric, Orly recommends silk jersey or 100% rayon fabric. Two yards will make the dress knee length. This entire DIY will cost you $50, but can cost you up to $400 in a high-end store.

For those who can't or don't want to sew the hem and sleeves, use stitch witch. All you do is iron the hem and it stays forever.

    Helpful Video.
Kaftans are a no brainer and a make a glamorous addition to a holiday wardrobe esp when visiting countries with a conservative dress code.

A for effort and idea but C for execution. Even sewing by hand there is no reason not to hem all edges. Unless using a material that doesnt fray like a tee or jersey knit and the edges roll when cut. If you want a slimmer look and open on side you can hem edges entirely first then stitch on top with wrong sides together. Ive made many simple Halloween costumes this way with folded material and using sheets. You have the person lay down on folded fabric. Hold arms out like a T and draw in angel sleeves, vampire wings, anything. But it has to be much looser as sleeves not set in. That applique is also not meant to be hanging out there with raw edges. It’s made to zig zag close around, called satin stitch. But you must Stabilize under with tracing paper or similar. I use engineering tracing paper. Cheaper than fabric stores. Sew around edges of applique. Then trim edges off applique carefully or use applique scissors. You can also trim the material under on parts you want see through. There is no glue in sewing either. Seriously ive used that all too. If you want it soft it won’t be, if you want it washable, it won’t be. Even if this was your very first project and you are hand sewing just take your time and take very tiny stitches. Look up French rolled hem. Very easy and fast by hand. You are making a little tube, a rolled hem. I still use it as practically the only thing I had do for very fine fabrics that you cannot machine sew. Ive been sewing since age 10. I’m 64 now. This is the differences in looking home made. And sorry she is not using sewing terms. Buy a book printed in the 60s or watch tutorials by those sewing for years for detail techniques. Like how to hem, how to do a binding. How to measure yourself. Note the material is flat if you are not flat as in model skinny you need more inches in width than elbow to elbow if you need to accommodate a bust, booty or tummy. Then you can do the design thing. As noted I said A for effort.

may i suggest finishing the sleeve edges before sewing side seam. hemming the bottom is not really necessary if you: stitch across (use chalk or frixion pen [fades away with heat] to draw a straight line to follow) in a small zig zag; then pull or pick out horizontal threads, cut the ones that do not come out easily. You may also add lace over “hem” stitching line at this point if you like. a frayed edge topped with lace makes a nice edge.

How do you hem the sleeves and the neckline? You can't leave it looking all raggedly like that??!! I just made this and now I don't know what to do with the necklaine b/c the edges are ragged.

Everybody please say it with me: CALF-TON like a ton of calf (for grammar police calves Lol but that defies my pronunciation purpose) so calf-ton. Not calf-tan! 🙄😖Trust me I'm middle eastern I know how it's supposed to be said. Also if you can find 2 large identical scarves or beach covers that you like you can use them and save yourself the trip to fabric store. So instead of having a fold on top you'll have a seam. No biggy.
    Let's say it again CALF-TON. 😊👏

Rosalind Hamilton you would need somewhere between 3 1/2 and four, depending on your height. Measure from your shoulder to the floor and double that, then add maybe four inches for seam allowances and hem.

$50??? I pay my Tunisian kaftans only TND 25 - this makes +/- 8 euros per kaftan... No need to make them myself; I can buy them directly from the bled. And ALL the appliques are sewn piece by piece and not in a whole big piece because I do believe that each design refers to a tribe - for example the Djerbian applique will never look like the one of Gabes or Tunis or whatever other town, therefore tribe. Same applies to Morroccan kaftans I believe.

The pic looks like a black person who made that comment so what would you call it when black women want 16 inch long hair and thin lips, wouldn't that be also stealing cultural fashion. Don't get your trousers in a bunch I am black but I am not stupid.
