Our history with Macassar is recorded in our songlines. We have sword, tobacco & flag dance & the macassan prayer to Allah is in the song. Macassans traded with coastal clans who traded with inland clans. Produce included pearls & trepang (sea cucumber) traded for knives & cloth We also traded language. Today in Arnhem Land we still use about 400 different words from the Macassan language. eg we use the word Rrupiah Galiku Manimani barramatha berrang Balanydja Some economic terms:. Balanydja-payments rendered for goods & services under contract Dhä-marŋgum-liability Molwat-asset Meŋurr-value People travelled back and forth between Arnhem Land and Macassar. There were intermarriages and today we have Yolngu familes in Indonesia.

masha Allah .. this took me back to my Arnhem Land days.. I spent 18 years there and the people of Galiwinku and Gapuwiyak always talked of the Makassan visits and some of our friends were related to them.. and yes I learned language and the language discussion is all true.. I was a balanda..... this was like a journey home.. and the azhan is part of the funeral ceremony (bungul) for the Yirritja people.

Dan inilah salah satu bukti konkrit bahwa Bangsa Makassar (Wajo,Luwu,Mandar,Melayu) sangat mengedepankan kemanusiaan dalam menjalin/diplomasi dg bangsa lain sebab berbeza dg propaganda2 cerita karangan Yg dibuat oleh pihak2 sekutu lokal Belanda (eropah terlemah😅) bhw mereka dijajah oleh bangsa Makassar padahal singkat.y hanyalah "kedengkian" hingga tertinggal jauh oleh bangsa Makassar

The Malay people were in Africa long before the Europeans, Madagascar has its roots Malagasqua meaning people of Malay, that's how the Khwena Xhaam or commonly known as bushmen called them and gave them permission to settle on the island, the Malays came for trade and the sea cucumber. History is written by the European or rewritten for their benefit.

this is true. the global south shares a common history and experience including colonisation and destruction of culture by the europeans. billions of people around the world share this experience but we are kept divided and exploited by economic systems set up by the same european families guilty of colonialism.

Great video Drew! Can I ask you more about the image used in the thumbnail for this video with the Makassar man and the Yolngu man greeting each other? Was it a ceremony or a dance that involved Yolngu visitors to Makassar or Makassarese visitors to Yolngu country? Those hand stencils are not connected to Australian Aboriginal people. During an invitation from a university in Ujung Pandang about 20 years ago, to attend a 3 day seminar to discuss the contact history, we went on an excursion to the caves and the late George Chalupka, who was a rock art expert, assessed them as being Asian hands in size and shape and judging from other signs, said that they were probably about 5000 years old, far younger than Aboriginal stencils. Secondly, the languages are also not related, however in some places along the north coast of Australia there were up to 500 hundred loan words from old Makassarese, many of which are still in use. There was also a 'Macassan' creole used all along the coast NT and Kimberly coast that Aboriginal people who had no common language would use. People who are old now say that their grandparents still spoke it, but it is gone now.
Several people in the video have passed away, so it would be respectful to put a notice at the head of the video saying this.
Thanks for the video, enjoyed seeing glimpses of how Makassar has changed. The museum at Sungguminasa has really been updated radically. The first painting looks commissioned, illustrative of a narrative. The figures are rather unusual in style, however there was a quick tilt up an authentic Wurramu carving donated from Elcho Island through MAGNT in 1996 that I can vouch for.

Thanks for your input and advice. I can see how the video may imply that these were Australian Aboriginal hand stencils. It was not my intention. I was only trying to briefly summarise Sulawesi's history. I should have made that clear. I plan to make a higher-quality video for the future and will make sure to clarify the matter. This was my first attempt at a documentary. I am working on a number of projects to help spread the awareness of this history. I am hoping to provide a number of resources for Australian schools and the general public. If you have any rare or interesting information to share or images, that will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for your kind words and advice.
      Regards
      Shaheed Drew
