The key word is practical effects. The Poseidon-Adventure pretty much only used practical effects, which held up far better than special effects like the explosion seen here.
I just watched it Free with Ads after 42 yrs when I saw it 1st time at 16 in theaters and I think it's a campy film. It's basically...."The Volcano Adventure". Which is just fine. James Franciscus was a very underrated actor and always does a great job!
This movie taught me that lava bombs = mini nukes. I love that James Franciscus keep staring defiantly at the lava right up to the end. Great actor crammed into a terrible “corporate a-hole” role.

I was bitterly disappointed and bored as was the whole cinema as nearly the entire cinema just talked through the whole film like it was an afternoon tea social ..

Looks like Warner slashed the budget this since it originally had $20 million budget when it was slashed in the middle of the production. Or, they spent too much money on the hotel to film.

She occasionally throws up the terrible offspring of our pride and carelessness to remind us of how puny we really are in the face of a tornado, an earthquake or a volcano. The reckless ambitions of man are often dwarfed by their dangerous consequences.
Cleanup crews from a big company are gonna find calcified and charred alive guests including the burned alive Nicki Spangler who crumbles before a cleanup man's eyes. Did any of the guests who wants to run down the other side stairs to escape the fireball escape?
I still dont´get why this film wasn´t as succesful as Poseidon Adventure and Towering Inferno. It´s almost as good as them. Much, much better than Dante´s Peak and Volcano.
That’s an insult to those 2 films frankly. I’m attached to this one as it frightened the socks off me as a child (something about the slowly impending doom of the flowing lava, the bridge sequence gave me nightmares) but it’s a rubbish film. Disinterested actors, paltry script, abysmal special effects even for the time (which aren’t something you can say about the other 2, rather obvious model Poseidon in the opening of that film not withstanding) and a really anti-climatic ending overall makes it a complete dud in my eyes. It’s a shame, it’s got loads of actors and actresses that I love in it, but they’re all wasted and none of them gave a damn about the film.
I honestly thought the lava bomb and shattered mirror was good. The acting was fine in this film. It needed more extras ...and a bigger budget for the volcano and lava scenes. The oil strike at the beginning was very well executed. I give it an honest 2.5 stars.

Lousy movie. And whose idea was it to lower an observation capsule down into an active volcano? The way it droops downward makes it look like a limp weiner.
It would have been composited back then, green screen wasn’t the norm yet, not even close. Hence why you can see the matte lines around the explosion. It’s pretty dismal, could have still worked as a paltry special effect that at least looked presentable/sort of well edited into the shot even though it still looks rubbish, but they couldn’t even get it to fit right, you can see the very bottom of the hotel just under the (very flat) bottom of the explosion! 🤣
IT IS SO HARD TO BELIEVE..... That With All The Talent & Big Stars In This Film, It Turned Out So Awful. Sometimes You Just Can't Recapture "That Old Magic", Even With The Same Folks.....
It’s crazy that this came out after The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno and Earthquake and yet those three have far more superior effects.
