From the BBC docu-drama, "Krakatoa: The Last Days." The movie is also known as "Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction" and aired on Discovery Channel. The movie brings to life the journals and recollections of four witnesses who survived the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatoa in August of 1883.
This segment features the Beijerinck (Beyerinck) family in the village of Ketimbang, Sumatra. Controller Willem Beijerinck was one of seven assigned to oversee the growth and development of the Dutch colonies. Krakatoa had been building up activity, sending forth little explosions and a column of smoke from May to July. Many viewed this phenomenon as spectacular yet harmless. But to a few, such as Johanna Beijerinck, Willem's wife, this was an ominous sign of terrible things to come. This is her account from her journal.
On August 26, 1883, Krakatoa entered into its paroxysmal phase, with eruptions on a virtually continuous basis and explosions heard every 10 minutes. A black cloud of ash arose from its depths to 17 miles (27km) high. The combined result of such heavy volcanic activity birthed the first of the tsunami that would destroy the coastal villages surrounding the volcano.

There’s a written account of the final eruption by a Dutch woman who was fairly close by, saying that scalding hot volcanic ash blasted past their house and gushed up uncontrollably through the cracks between the boards in the floor like fountains, burning everyone indoors. The native people outside were almost all killed.

Moral of the story, if you're in a coastal resort and the tide suddenly and mysteriously goes along way out, don't just stand there like a stunned mullet scratching your head and say to yourself, "...that's weird huh?" Freaking look for high ground and get there as soon as humanly possible. Don't go back to your appartment and get your bags, don't stand there gazing, get your ass to the nearest hill at least 50- 100 meters above sea level, or at least a solid concrete high rise building.
Even in late 2004, with global web and info revolution already in reach, most didn't know about the Tsunami which was about to strike, so we can assume that back in the 19 -Century, when the info was usually preserved only at universities, very few knew about such a nature penomena.
Odd how westerners are dressed so warm and snuggly in a tropical climate.
@@schoolssection Fair point. I was in Jakarta in 2015 and it was extremely humid. I’m used to a dry climate and even in shorts and a t-shirt it was uncomfortable outdoors. One of the first things a friend and I did when we arrived by train from Bandung was walk the entire block around the national monument. It must have taken us an hour. There wasn’t a breath of air circulating it was just completely still the whole time we were there. Great experience though. Wish we could have stayed longer and seen more.

@@schoolssection Clothes back then were made from natural fibers so while it could get hot, they were not as warm as polyester and synthetic fabrics. Wool for winter, cotton and linen for summer as it has always been even in the desert. If you want to dress modestly, cotton is the way to go in hot climates.

Never forget reading a first hand account of a guy who was running for his life ahead of the wave looking back to see a woman give birth as she was running behind him. It was a great book one of the best I've ever read: 'Krakatoa' by Simon Winchester

The only problem I have with that book is two thirds of it is about the history of the area for the first few hundred years before the eruption and then what the societal effects of the eruption were on the area afterward. Not enough about the actual eruption.
I read that book twice. That's how much I enjoyed it.
It's on my read list now.
The most terrifying thing is that this isn't the biggest eruption of the Krakatoa Volcano, there was a much larger one 1348 years earlier in 535 AD.
And also remember Mt Tambora nearby. We know it also put on a much bigger show back in 1815!

Little did philip know about tsunami and ash wave that travel at mach 1.
1:27. “The volcanoes 25 miles away I know what I’m doing” Something he would later regret saying. Not knowing of the full power of the volcano.
It was just the minimum power. Supervolcano can bury people even hundreds of miles away.
I’m afraid I may have said the same thing had I been there. Twenty five miles back then was along way.

Imagine that I provide information and you examine natural disasters in Indonesia, the tragedy of natural disasters in Indonesia is 100 times more devastating in the world. Nature in Indonesia is very beautiful but very deadly and dangerous. It was on a much different level compared to other countries.
Krakatoa 1883 was able to kill many people with just the sound of its explosion, plus a tsunami with a height of 30 feet and an earthquake simultaneously. It was recorded that there were 2 islands that were destroyed near Krakatoa, even measuring 5x Tsar Bomba, 2x larger than Singapore and the impact of the explosion reached various countries.
Tambora 1815 was a pure explosion that caused a worldwide drop in temperature and resulted in poverty in parts of Europe, America, Africa, Asia and Australia. For 1 year there was no summer and millions of people died. Even the sky turned black as the sun was shrouded in smoke from the explosion.
Toba Supervolcano has experienced an explosion that paralyzed all humans with its total population, even the explosion was felt as far as Africa. Therefore, Toba now has the largest natural caldera lake in the world, in the center of which is an island almost the size of Poland.
The Samalas supervolcano was recorded as an explosion that knocked down dozens of islands and land into pieces, giving rise to a new volcano called Rinjani. In fact, the explosion was not far from the island of Bali and surrounded by dozens of volcanoes.

In 2015 there were 1,694 natural disasters.
In 2016 there were 2,342 natural disasters.
In 2017 there were 2,175 natural disasters.
In 2018 there were 1,999 natural disasters.

In 2020 there were 2,925 natural disasters.
In 2021 there will be 2,796 natural disasters.
Natural disasters in Indonesia are number 1 in the world and even internationally labeled that Indonesia is a very dangerous and deadly natural disaster-prone area, taken from 2015 data. Imagine if I wrote from the 1800s - 2021 there would be more than millions of natural disasters in Indonesia .

I remember watching this film as a child, it was one of those films you never forget while growing up. This was a horrible tragedy, and show clearly in this film the dangers of living close to volcanoes, a lesson we have even to this very day, continue to make these same mistakes, as we continue to build our homes and towns far too close to these (most of the time), sleeping giants.
I understand why we do it, volcanoes, leave behind highly valuable mineral deposits, and the ash is very fertile for growing crops. I think in future, if we must build communities in these dangerous places, we should limit the number of people who are to live and work there, on a voluntary basis, with an understanding of the risks of being there, and keep families as far away from these dangerous places as possible.

Volcanic ash is interesting stuff. I live in Portland, Oregon which is 40 miles south of Mt. St. Helens. When it eurupted in 1980, throughout that summer, we got several heavy dustings of ash. Its like gritty talcom powder. In the air it suffocates a cars engine and if it settles on a car you cant brush it off without scratching the shit out of paint. Spraying the street w a garden hose it just gets sticky and pushes around but doesnt wash away. It lined the street curbs for years after.
Volcanic ash contains very small, very sharp particles of a very touch volcanic rock.
Just as builder's sand is different from beach sand, the brand-new volcanic ash has all it's sharp edges intact.

FINALLY, an accurate fictional depiction of a tsunami. No ridiculous 100 metre breaking wave, but a flash flood from the sea like a sudden rapid huge tide (IMO the old English term "tidal wave" is a far more accurate description than the now universally-used Japanese name "tsunami" meaning "harbour wave").

@@jonahmoran3751 I haven't seen that. But I'd say the best depictions are all the videos from ACTUAL tsunamis like the many made of the recent 21st century ones in Japan, Thailand and other places.
This is one of the reasons why I posted this particular clip. A lot of people didn't know the warning signs of an on-coming tsunami and its destructive effects.
So folks! If you see the water recede from the shore drastically, then run for high ground!

Same in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami or boxing day tsunami as many call it. I have heard many stories of people going down to the beach to see what was happening and some even playing in the sand where water once was.

Keep in mind some areas do not always recede. Tsunami can have positive and negative sides to the wave. You may only see a rise in sea level. (Negative side = classic receding water at shore, positive side = sudden rise in sea level)
Whatched this in school today.. Everyone laughed in the sight of the two young boys playing whilst the tides washed back, Then they laughed even more once the tsunami forms and the two boys and mother.. Were swept away and probably died. While the boys were laughing, I told myself to keep it together, Becuase i acually found this terribly sad, And at the same time interesting. Over 36,000 people died!

I agree. I first saw this on Discovery Channel. Their shows have always been good in a dry sort of way, but this one left me breathless! Being entertained PLUS learning something new without feeling schooled was a great achievement on BBC's part.
I know I saw this as a movie. Wasn't seen as entertainment but as how truly horrific that had to have been to all those people.
@beaverfeaver12 - This movie is based on diaries of people who went through it. When the volcano became active and destroyed itself, it displaced a lot of water and thus created all those huge tsunami (and all that ash, and all the pyroclastic flows/surges, etc.).
Seeing this again, 15 years later, reminds me how far we've come with respect to learning about nature and how powerful and devastating it can be. Looking at it now, from the perspective of the 21st Century, I would be running for the hills at the first sight of the waters receding.
Gives me the chills since I live within walking distance of the Atlantic Ocean.

In the captain's log of a ship 40 miles away, it was reported that half the crew had their eardrums shattered by the explosion.
When I learned about Krakatoa in the 4th Grade, I remember being told that the explosion could be heard all across the Pacific Rim--thousands of miles away.
I read that blast was so loud that people from South-Western Australia, India, and China heard it!
I don't think this was the final explosion.
It is interesting that the relatively small eruption of Krakatau (not Krakatoa) in the 1880s received so much attention, when the great eruption of Tambora in 1815 was so much worse - both in terms of the number of victims and the societal consequences in Asia, the eastern United States and Europe. Krakatau was a tragedy, but Tambora was as close to a supervolcano as we can get.

+J you mean the 2004 tsunami were that phenomenon was MUCH more evident. The 2011 tsunami was more dangerous to people living further inland where people didn't see the receding ocean and had little warning. Japan is much more mountainous so the coast is harder to see as opposed to the Indonesian islands. So stop acting like a dumb ass.

Yeah but it is inaccurate. The tsunami was actually forty feet tall and the survivors only survived becasue they climbed up a mountain. Nobody survived by lashing themselves to a pole or getting up to a second story. And while all that was going on everyone was being choked by the falling ash from the volcano.
Oh, and that baby died.
As a child growing up next to the sea, and I do mean next as the tide line was less than a 100 yards away, tidal waves scared me, where as the earthquakes were simply sorta fun.
The music accompanying this film is amazing. So haunting. It is an indication of the horror about to happen.

people back in 1883 didn't know the sign of tsunami so the think oh fish! let's pick it up! it even happened back in 2004 in Malaysia and Thaiwand they curious why the water is going down so they play in the water and the beach and as soon ans they saw the wave they run. Good thing today every country is now know the sign of tsunami so they don't do that anymore and the second reason We Indonesian did that is because we just really likes fish :3 i mean who wouldn't like to eat fish?XD.

I took a Vacation to Sumatra in 2018, until we heard a loud bang, around an hour after that, the water started receding when we were at the beach, I tried to warn my family they didnt listen until they saw the wave, we started running, but my step sis didnt make it😭

Whatever form and reason it is for language, etc, for me it's very good. Given that back history, we can't imagine if we lived in that era. How fierce, thank god we were born in this year.
This reminds me of Squidward yelling Krakatoa.
I know it's a older movie, and I'm nit-picking, but when the initial eruption occurred the people ran around screaming too soon. Everyone would have stopped and looked around waiting.
I remember hearing that when Krakatoa exploded in that gigantic volcanic eruption and the ensuing tsunamis that followed didn't it say that the casualty count was like somewhere over 300,000 people killed from both the tsunamis and the pyroclastic flows.

The sheer amount of energy released by that eruption is almost unfathomable. Even more so, the distance at which the explosion could be heard.
What to do what a tsunami is approaching: Stop and stare! Run ten feet stop and turn around and stare! Do this while you are trying to get away.. Keep running slow and keep turning around to look at the tsunami. If you do this you will survive.

As a surfer, seeing the shoreline recede, I would run immediately.

@drewnickel - Since volcanoes are unpredictable even with scientific monitoring, I would say that those volcanoes you've mentioned are also possible dangers. I don't take ANY volcano for granted, even if they've been dormant for ages.

I saw a piece of very grainy B&W film taken in Alaska during the 1964 quake. It showed the shore with a short pier, and the water going out. Two kids were on the pier, and when the water came back there was nothing.

During those Times The Philippines was under the Spanish Rule whose rule lasted until 1898. We're under Spanish Rule for about 333 Years while Indonesia was under the Dutch rule.
