Hands-On Review: Denon DJ Prime 2 DJ System

- Denon DJ announced the Prime 2 alongside the Prime Go, and they represent the second and third units launched in this standalone, all-in-one range of DJ systems (the first of course being the runaway-successful Prime 4).
As the name suggests, this is a two-channel version of the Prime 4. But what else has been cut down? And is it a viable choice for the pro DJ who doesn't really need a four-channel controller? In this hands-on review, I'll give you my thoughts having spend an hour with it at a Denon DJ press event. (Expect a full review of the product once we've been able to spend a bit more time with it.)

Nice ... best 2 channel standalone, best 4 channel standalone and best players on the market with the 5000s and 6000s. Denon are setting the standards now.

I switched from an XDJ RX2 to a Denon Prime 2 and the Denon smokes the RX2 in every single way. I don't miss anything about it.

Wassup Phil ! Thanks for a great review. I just pre-ordered the Prime 2 from Guitar Center on Presidents Day Weekend Sale. Now if Pioneer and Rekordbox made the Ipad fully compatible with the DDJ 1000 that would be awesome.

Digital DJ Tips changed my mind . After thinking about it I decided to stay with my DDJ 1000. I don’t mind using a 2012 15” Mac Book Pro. I love using Rekordbox and DJ Pro 2 with Tidal and Spotify. I’m waiting for Pioneer and Rekordbox on IPAD next. That would be cool.
Been waiting for this controller I’m a massive fan of the prime series os and the screens 😍 definitely should have 4 colour effects and the price should be £1000

I have question about hot cues.
I was trying Prime 2 today and there was one thing I couldn't figure out. Whe I use my MC3000 together with Virtual DJ I use a lot of Hot Cues. The cool thing is that each time I use any of my Hot Cues and then press CUE button music stops at the last Hot Cue I used instead of going back to "main" cue point ( the one next to PLAY button ). It's so annoying that in Prime 2 each time I am testing my Hot Cues I have to find the way to go to the one I like. For example I want to jump to one of them and prepare loop... If I just pres hot cue button It starts playing and I cant set the loop.
I hope you understand what I mean.
Is this possible to make Prime going back to last Hot Cue I used? I was testing only with original OS without updating.
Yea, screen could be a bit bigger. Serato or engine is both fine with me.

Denon should really consider opining up their software to a pool of professionals to play around with to suggest improvements - a place to pool knowledge and experience to enhance the software. P.S. not played with it yet but will have a mess around before seriously considering purchasing the hardware. Just an idea as I love what they are bringing to the table in the form of hardware.

I'm a software developer. If they open sourced the software I would contribute for free.
1st time I saw it I didn't know What was going on. Later figured out that the track title cue points & BPM was for one track ... but the actual audio file that plays, would be different and the wave for displayed could be something else. Have to completely ignore all visuals and mix like it's vinyl tables ... can really throw you off if you're not paying close attention and just grooving

Hi! was going to get the 4 but was big for my purposes (and transport too). Now Prime 2 seems to be the right choice. Just let me know what are the differences between Prime 2 and Go. I am tango dj so don't need a lot of effects and loops, only a good software to manage the 6000+ .mp3 files to create playlists.

HI mate, i would like to ask you something. Is prime 2 ok for beginner? Or do you recommend another ALL IN ONE System like the XDJRR pioneer?
The Prime 2 is an all in one system as well, it'd be great for a beginner

This looks fantastic. Pioneer having no onboard track analysis or streaming is a deal breaker for me.
As all the Denon (and Numark Mixstream) kit runs on the same OS, you have a few units to choose from!
I was hoping that you would address my one main question.....how easy is it to locate tracks from a large database when you no longer have a laptop keyboard and have to use the touch screen?

Does the auxiliary input pass through one of the mixer channels and the FX unit?

PLEASE Denon, follow the example of the Prime 4 / VDJ and *add Serato DJ Pro support for the Prime 2* as well! Then you would have the true 2-channel BEAST 😎 on the market, thanks to great flexibility, and more Pioneer SR/SX/RX users like me could switch. The Prime 4 is great, yes, but bulky and not everyone needs all channels. Thank you!
They have a forum that they watch like a hawk for suggestions TriStar so if you want to add to the number of people who are calling for this I'd suggest posting there :)

What do I use to transfer sound through to Facebook live when doing live sets ?? Cables or were to plug in the back of it .
Use an audio interface like the iRig Stream (that's what we use)

I just wish this had the 10” display the prime four has , the it would be the ultimate standalone 2 channel controller.

How come they didn't put an HDMI video output port so you can see it on large display monitor.

You'll struggle to find a Prime 2, so on that basis, DDJ-800. However, they're very different things - one is a controller, one is a DJ system. Figure out which TYPE of device you want first.

Definitely, though if you already have a computer a cheaper controller to get you started until you know what you actually want/need might be a better choice

my MCX8000 is already a 2 channel stand alone device with screens.

Because it actually works. Loved my MCX8000 but had MANY issues with it freezing. Had to sell it and never regretted it. Try these prime units and you will understand.

I too have owned a MCX8000 and is is a piece of s*** compared to the RX2, P2 and P4. So many flaws you wouldn't believe it. I'd rather use a DDJ-1000 with a laptop & serato. My friend now owns a P2 and it is bloody amazing.

Why is every light flashing on it? Can you turn the lights off? Can you turn the image on the disks off too? I don’t need a light show
No, you can't turn all the lights off, they're needed to feed back info to the DJ. you can turn the central images off though, you can just replace them with black.

Quick question, I’m undecided on the Prime go and the Prime two.
The go has no individual meters which I use to keep my volume in check before bringing in the track, the go doesn’t have this, however I could Maybe learn to live without. I also will be getting on and off trains ( not very busy trains) with my kit so it needs to be a portable rig. Would you say it’s ok to hop on and off trains with the Prime two? I see they make cases also for the prime two which could help.
Fantastic for the mobile guy. The font seems to be the same as any laptop just on a smaller screen. Big fan of denon in general. Glad to leave the lappy behind. 4 channel version is simply to large for sensible mobile work.

I think the single USB slot is a big mistake, seamless handovers and B2B will be impossible unless everyone carries both USB and SD. In my eyes that's one area where the RX2 still wins against this.

there are another 2 round the back. it just doesnt have 2 on the front of the unit like the prime4 and xdj-rx
The Prime 2 has 3 USB slots, 2 of them are in the back

Bought a Prime 2 in February 2021, after having pioneer gear for years.
I thought this would be the answer to all my prayers 🙏 , how wrong could I be.
Terrible sound 🙉 ! diabolical effects bank, no fader adjustment, sync button very strange 🤷, engine software terrible, no pro link function, not enough jog bend adjustment (too abrupt) , waveform hopeless, and a crazy pad section, in which the colours are not changeable 🤦.
There are some plus points.
Nice touch screen with great library features, built in wi-fi and loads of connections for storage, that's probably it.
I don't know if the prime 4 is any better ? but I'm thinking of changing back to pioneer again soon,
very disappointed 😔
Well, have fun with your overpriced Pioneer plastic trash then. While we others enjoy Engine DJ 2.0

Prime 4 all the way ;) very nice for party kids in home school ' but not professional stuff only prime 4 for mobile dj .
