The jontron debate was with me, like many, my first exposure to Destiny. Like many others, Destiny's debate with jontron was the beginning of a path to properly rationalizing my political positions. Jontron debate was my first exposure to destiny and funny enough it actually made me resent him because i was such a fan of jontron. However, somewhat recently i revisited that video and realized jontron was kinda crazy and destiny did nothing wrong.

We should all be more like Destiny. Even when I disagree with him, he has a lot of traits that I would like to have and would like people I engage with to have. I think we would all have better conversations.
The Steps to Maintain Your Gamer Identity: One, be offended by everything but claim to be offended by nothing. Two, Double Down when others point out you're being an asshole. Three, grift hard on those who give you dollars.
I feel the way Destiny talks about corporate finance misses what the actual problem is. It's not that corporations just have complete power over people and can pass the most unpopular bills. Corporations just are able to get far more bills heard that match their interests than people and that leads to outcomes that disproportionately benefit them, because bills that are just popular with people need a lot more behind them to get off the ground. That still seems like a significant problem even if corporations aren't passing wildly unpopular bills.
I also feel the way Destiny talks about the two party system misses what the actual problem is. Yes, no system in politics is perfect, but the scale of the problem is completely different. A two party system decentivizes change, reduces views/goals available to vote for and it limits choice in dire situations when you're choosing between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton... Sure, you can get some shitty situations but at least there's change/strong political discourse happening in parliament, and more importantly, at least there's more alternatives to look for in periods of stagnation. Destiny seems like the type of person who embraces debate, argument and the change of opinion through discourse. A two party system devalues that whilst multiple parties embrace it. One issue I have with Destiny himself however is how he focused on the people within the argument rather than the argument itself. Just because idiots believe something, or your only experience with something is through idiots, doesn't mean that perspective is devalued. I'm not socialist, and sure, a lot of socialists don't understand the economy in the slightest, but there are also people who've spent years studying politics and economics AND support socialism. Just because your only experience with debating socialism is with idiots, doesn't mean all of socialism is illogical. And same with the diversity in media argument. I'm left, understand that diversity in media isn't always political BUT am largely opposed to the forced diversity/social political intent seen in modern entertainment. Just because there are plenty of racists within the ranks, doesn't mean the argument itself is devalued. Same as with the pro-diversity stance; Just because there are a lot of SJW's who want to eradicate white people in entertainment, doesn't mean that diversity isn't something needed within our entertainment. The worst and most extreme people are attracted to the 'side' closest to their beliefs. They're also *significantly* more vocal than everybody else is. He should be more aware/understanding of these people than using them to decide which 'side' is right.
@@pagatryx5451 In terms of the two party system, I completely agree. Destiny talks a lot about getting people out to vote, so he should know better than anyone that a large reason for people not voting is disenfranchisement. Something like ranked voter choice would help immensely with that, or we could do a general runoff election. The two party system definitely limits political discourse and general creativity in finding new options to deal with the problems of today. I also completely agree with what you are saying in the second point as well. I remember there was a point in time where Destiny was telling Peachachoo that no one important in academia were marxists, which is just insane. Like Destiny often says the socialists he debates are too stupid to get him to read theory, but that seems like it should be a great reason to read theory. The people you are debating aren't representing the ideas well, and there are places where they are formed in a much more robust and logical way. I'm a socialist, but I still tend to agree with Destiny far more than the socialists they debate, because I don't feel like they represent those ideas well at all. Idk about diversity in media. I agree that it can be done in poor taste, but you can make shitty shows that don't have diversity as well. I don't support making it hamfisted, but it seems like a lot of the concerns surrounding it are really just dog whistles. Not everyone, but this doesn't seem like a larger problem than just making bad media, which any reasonable person is already against. I do get your broader point here though and agree. It does seem like a lot of Destiny's beliefs are formed by people who he argues with on stream, and Twitch seems to almost cherrypick dumb extremists. There can be a lot learned if you attempt to reconstruct people's argument in the most charitable way rather than trying to win an argument. That's another issue I have with Destiny. He often says he is just interested in the ideas someone has, but he does things that make it much more difficult to express the ideas with clarity. Like when he turns debates into shouting matches or just assumes people are acting in bad faith. That makes people far more guarded when explaining themselves, which makes the discussion of ideas far worse. I largely agree with you assessment here, so hopefully it's something that gets better with time (I'm not too optimistic though lol).
Destiny is right, don't watch debates to inform yourself. They're for entertainment and potentially other perspectives. At least that's what I've experienced 🤷♀️
Online discourse has been changed by censorship, it's an echo chamber, the right wing has been removed off TH-cam, at least the good ones that debate, what's left for the right wing is ppl like Crowder which ppl who take politics seriously think he's a joke. Online discourse has not changed, the algorithm has.
@@Willowtree82 weirdly enough I think milo was smart enough to eventually contend with more intellectual topics than the other people in his little goon crew of knock offs. I think his discussion with destiny more or less proves that. But I’m the other hand he seems like a shifty person and more importantly had no incentives to use his brain in more useful ways until after the mass deplatforming. So basically the only way for him to be even serviceable as an online intellectual figure was to bully him offline. Funny how life works.
@@Willowtree82 The right wingers who do occasionally debate like Mark Collett, Eric Striker, Mike Peinovich, Vincent James, etc. can still debate people on TH-cam. It is true that they have been censored off the platform but they can and do appear on debate channels and the videos do not get taken down just because they are on them.
@Frank Marano ah yes, because everyone wants to show their real face when they're doing political commentary that will draw hate from fascists, especially when it will lead to a long line of comments about their body and makeup if their appearance isn't absolutely perfect on a stream where the camera can pick up every blemish (if not every pore). Maybe you would, but there are reasons people don't want to. But sure, we could alternatively leave the Vtube fandom to be coopted by the fascists by being wierd and gatekeeping about the aestetic. The JonTron debate was the first Destiny video I ever saw and it helped de-radicalize me. And the whole $5 an hour thing at McDonalds is crazy, I was making somewhere like $16-17 an hour at like 16 years of age working at a KFC, but then again Australia doesn't exist so maybe it was a fever dream.
Does Australia not have different min wages based on age. In the UK a few years ago when I started working at 16 I got £4.11 working in retail even though the older workers who did less work and barely tried got £7 or 8 just for being over 21
@@Bjarku so? That's a huge segment of people. Like any popular political group or movement will have a core of hardcore ideologues who kind of guide the conversation and direction of the group, and then a load of people who are basically just normies who joined in because the beliefs of the group seem to make sense to them without really having the time to devote to thinking about it. That larger group might be able to be swayed away, but they still grant legitimacy by their size and tolerance of the ideology.
@@Bjarku Haha nice dude, I mean I can't prove to you I was an alt righter only a couple years back. @@MrKiingpin Yeah we do, wages vary obviously from employment to employment. The national minimum wage is $19.84 for people 21 years and older. Cancel culture outrage is more outraged for people who unjustifiably lose their jobs because people complained to their employer about false things and they got fired. Obviously people who are self employed like Jontron aren’t going to fire themselves...
Yeah it was used to hold powerful people accountable at first but mutated into a bastardized version of itself that targeted people who already have almost no power. Especially when it’s ideals are pushed so far that even the marginalized members of its own community are tarred and feathered for not towing the line perfectly when their only really support group was the people tarring them. Contrapoints has a great video on it.
@@Kraator57 that's bad but it's still exceedingly rare. 99% of people who think cancel culture is this big important issue for society do not personally know anyone who has been "cancelled", and base their opinions on either celebrities being pseudo-cancelled, or some of a much smaller number of cases of some normal person getting publicly shamed over something petty and losing their job for it.
@@krombopulos_michael No it’s a thing. It was interesting to hear Destiny's opinion on two party system. Even though I think I disagree with him I do agree with some of his criticisms of coalition governments. It would be interesting to hear his opinion on US's voting system (first past the post) compared to other versions. I feel like it is this choice that imo creates unnecessary forcing towards a two party system. In a lot of countries without this system a lot of the time parties mostly automatically slide towards hybrid two party systems either way but it still keeps the possibility of more parties more open than in the US, if the citizens at some point feel the need to more parties. But I would be open to changing my mind on this. Maybe Destiny already has expressed his position on this, I am not a big Destiny viewer at all and only just recently started watching a bit more of him.
FPTP in America makes the two-party system mathematically inevitable. America would still have a two-party system regardless if the nation were to merely stray from a winner-takes-all voting system doomed to such ends by Duverger's Law. The reason why is because of the schism between the capitalist class and the working class in America and how this relates to political power. There's tremendous financial control over the political sphere which is in my opinion the most causal force for America's two party system. This comes in multiple forms such as campaign finance, the lobbying influence on legislation, or the media oligopoly that controls the narrative on any meaningful candidate.
personally, I like coalitions in my country. A coalition government in Australia holds second place for the most amount of bills passed in a term I believe so the efficiency argument doesn't really work here. I do conscede that unimportant parties can gain disproportionate power in theory but in practice, at least in Australia, pretty much every party will form coalitions if they can get power.
i really liked jontron up until he got into that alt-right shit, i can't watch someone i've lost that much respect for. he still hints at things occasionally and it's just as embarrassing now as it was in 2016 or whatever
Although I never went any deeper than being an anti-sjw liberal, the jontron debate convinced me that people like Blair white, Warski, Sargon etc. have beliefs that lead to all the repugnant stuff the republican did for the past 4 years. I really do have destiny to thank for pushing me away from that kind of content.
Isn't the problem with media bias that 99% of people DON'T go out and read shit? I mean, evidently this is a problem, right? We're still tackling with whether climate change is real/an issue. It seems like addressing media bias seems like a more reliable way to educate people, rather than relying on them to give themselves an honest education.
The bit about anonymity toward the end, it's really a mixture between anonymity and identity. Destiny doesn't exist with anonymity, but neither does Sargon. The cults of personality lead the charge, and the anons carry out the actions. If you took away anonymity, it would just diffuse responsibility and lead to people climbing over each other like they already do with things like virtue signaling and clout chasing, neither of which really exist with anonymity. Conversely, if you made everyone anonymous, you get more of a focus on the ideas but don't get accountability, like the Internet was before social media was its centerpiece, leading to something that's probably a much richer experience but also much less culturally accessible because of all the offensive or weird things & it being harder to find repositories of ideas and their evolution/counterpoints without them being tied to personalities.
The story about getting fired from the casino actually illustrates very well the core of why Destiny is so disliked broadly. He is incapable of tempering his language to navigate social spaces without creating animosity. He assumes he is correct and that the people around him should have no bearing on how he exists in a social space. In any other profession, Destiny would likely not remain hired anywhere for very long, and his ability to function as an Internet personality only exists because he doesn’t have to navigate management.
1:27:41 "I think I covered all the questions I had, there's just one last question I had that's really really important to me personally.." I'm REALLY disappointed the question wasn't "Do you love black people?"
It is less likely to be flagged for offensive content if there isn't cursing early on, but the filter doesn't go too far into the video to scan for profanity.
51:17 Yeahh Destiny is right: he really is uninformed when it comes to governments formed by coalitions. He should look into how coalitions are formed, because it's not like the small green party with 4 seats is gonna govern with some big right-wing party. In a coalition agreements are made beforehand in strong negotiations and the political interests of each party in a coalition are pretty much aligned. And no one is claiming this form of government is the ''silver bullet'' or something: people are simply claiming these kind of governments are more democratic and are therefore ''better'', even if it's just slightly more democratic, it's still better. That's the point. Two-party systems are inferior. Period.
I think multi party systems are better than two party just because they more explicitly show who has the most power in coalitions. In two party systems, there is so much dispute over where parties should be and who should be leading because its hard to define to what degree each faction represents the overall population best. If you have a 3 party coalition where one party has 60 seats, another has 20, and the third has 5, its very clear that the 60 seat party is the more popular one and has the mandate to lead the coalition. The 5 seat party will probably weild slightly outsized power of they're needed to keep the majority together (like Manchin in the Senate), but they will also know that if they really push it too far, they can be replaced with another small party or group of independents, while the bigger ones cannot.
it would be quite a pog moment if jon came back to the internet being de-radicalized for lack of a better term and just hang out and chill with destiny
I mean he never really left. He did take a break but he often does anyway. Last I saw he was slightly hinting that the election was rigged so I don't think his politics have changed much.
it always feels so weird when people talk about 2010 as like the dawn of the internet when even broadband had been around for like 10 years at that point
Destinys reason why he doesnt want to be a bad person is so sociopathic lol. He never considers the morality of it and just that being seen as a bad person could impact his life negatively.
I’m Australian. We have mandatory voting. But in practice, voting itself isn’t the thing that is compulsory. Showing up to the polling place is compulsory. Once you have your name crossed off, nobody is actually policing whether you vote. You can just leave. So the obstacle of apathy is dealt with, but if you genuinely still have no opinion at that point, nothing forces you to make a choice.
Man that was a nostalgia hit for me. I remember posting on TeamLiquid and trying to get clout just to be able to get my SC2 stream up on the featured list... Good fuckin times man.
This guy's ego is insane... I'm sure he's probably smart, but he obviously thinks everybody else doesn't know what they're talking about and that him searching something on google for 5 minutes makes himself the authority on what's correct or not. He's right a lot quite a few things, but his ego/self-justification knows no bounds.
She's cool. I generally agree with Destiny's take on vtubers, but her point about people who otherwise wouldn't make content online feel like they can now is pretty valid. I mean, we got this nice interview because of that idea. So idk, seems like a pretty tough idea to grapple with.
I can’t debate people. Girlie:“Do you think America was founded on good ideas (joke)” Me off my meds: THIS IS CURSED LAND. EVERY LOCAL WALMART HAS AT LEAST 30 SKULLS BENEATH. REPENT TO THE GODS AND ACCEPT YOUR HELL.
I agree that what people are like now is more important. Hartley Sawyer was fired from The Flash for stuff he tweeted years ago and from everything I can see he isn't like that anymore. His character on the show also was kind of about change, so I find it extra frustrating.
Wait they can’t fire you for that in other countries? That actually sounds awful. Most the time my coworkers call in sick they are lying and I know it. It’s really frustrating. Maybe if you get a doctors excuse but like whenever I call in sick the doctors visit for the more is too expensive to be worth attempting to get it.
@@bigboy2217 in most countries you get a certain number of allocated sick days per year. Some people do lie to use them up, but most don't. Generally if you are going to be out a few days in a row or exceed the annual allowance then you do need a doctors note though.
@@bigboy2217 I mean the fact you can't just get a doctor's note without paying is probably why no one does when they feel sick. If I feel sick for a longer period in the UK I just go to my GP and get a note for free in like 10 mins, otherwise if it's just randomly feeling ill I'll just call in sick. In fact my work explicitly says not to come in if you're sick since it just gives other people your cold/flu/etc so it just wastes productivity. They're more likely to send you home than to ask you to come in. And that's like 100x more likely at a food place where you serve customers. So if I understand correctly, the American system makes people come in when they're sick for fear of losing their job and healthcare which will make them sicker, forcing them to sicken other workers and clients. Sounds like a shit system but we all know that, you're just trying to be edgy and shit on your coworkers. Sounds like Stockholm syndrome to me my dude.
yes, but it's more common for entry-level jobs. i've been let go from a couple factory jobs for that. i really don't think they'd fire a doctor for calling in sick once.

The scariest thing about that johntron debate is that he went back to business as usual and his fans (who I assume are pretty young) defended him so hard. He said the most crazy shit in that debate and it just sucks to see his fans not know what they were defending.
I remember that debate and just blindly believed sargon that destiny just cornered him into stuff he didn't wanna say and defended jon tron cause I thought he was just right leaning and not totally crazy. I think a lot of people fell down that lie like I did

It was the Journey into XJ9 that sealed it for me.
Jontron debate was my first exposure to destiny and funny enough it actually made me resent him because i was such a fan of jontron. However, somewhat recently i revisited that video and realized jontron was kinda crazy and destiny did nothing wrong.

He relies on personal attacks a lot and obviously thinks very highly of himself
all you have to do is stop complaining about it and start stop consuming. nobody force you to work or buy at the McDonald

Does Australia not have different min wages based on age. In the UK a few years ago when I started working at 16 I got £4.11 working in retail even though the older workers who did less work and barely tried got £7 or 8 just for being over 21
@@Bjarku so? That's a huge segment of people. That larger group might be able to be swayed away, but they still grant legitimacy by their size and tolerance of the ideology.

The fact that Jontron's videos still get millions of views and no one remembers this debate is proof that cancel culture outrage is fucking stupid.
Destiny has a good exchange of memes and serious discussion with a vtuber of all things.
to be fair, the vtuber mentioned being worried of threats so she has to go anonymous

Urgh yeah, people who arrive at opinions different to me trigger me so much. I go full NPC meme face.
Jontron really fell down the rabbit hole.

@@Miatalustrium makes sense.
Period.
34:40 jontron
Thank you
I think multi party systems are better than two party just because they more explicitly show who has the most power in coalitions.

Johntron was wrong about sooo much. Everything he said about Europe was dead on tho
