Hi Gary, follow up to let you know my mechanic replaced all new solenoids with a kit. Original 420012 solenoid short to positive and the code didn’t clear. Still won’t go into drive. The D on the gear shifter flashes. Engine light comes on. Drive Train Malfunction on dash.
Hi Gary, as you have replaced all the solenoids when only one was confirmed faulty, what do you do with the removed serviceable solenoids? Can these be cleaned and tested and used again? What do you do with them?
I have a 2011 335 Xdrive. 100L miles started getting symptoms of slipping. I would turn the car on and off to clear the limp mode. Eventually I couldnt do this anymore ad it was just rev and wouldnt engage. took to shop, they found a leak with only about 2 quartz left. Changed fluid and filter, was driveable but shifted sloppy. Opened it again changed the seals. Same. not improved. Now they are going back into it again to change solenoids. The shipe said the transmission fault still on. They arent reading the codes properly or this wouldnt be so much rework. Im hoping this is the fix. Shop says it shifts slips between 3/4th?
Hey Gary, so yesterday after resetting transmission adaptation on a zf8hp45 the car started shifting very roughy from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st. I than later got this code 420321 - Gear-ratio monitoring: Gearshift 2 to x not plausible and car won’t shut out of 1st unless I turn the car off and back on.
Nice video, thank you, but nothing about the elephant in the room. Most people do not read their owners manual, if they did they would know how to disengage the electronic park from inside the car, no dragging the dead cat or laying under a dead car needed. So when you buy a car first thing first is tune into that famous radio station RTFM also known as Read The eFing Manual. Nice to start with step one before step ten.
First of all, awesome video Sr. I have a 2016 audi A6 3.0t with the zf8hp55 i believe is a pretty similar to this one. i have had a pretty rought downshift from 3-2 since i bought the car with 20k, with a ocasional clunk most of the time when downshifting but also some times when upshifting 2-3 and i take the pedal of the gas slightly, not good on stop and go traffic for sure. its less rough on the mornings and it gets wors as i drive more during the day. im now at 52k and i did a fluid and filter service at 50k. after the service the issue went away for a couple of weeks but eventually came back again. i also had the adaptations reseted with no improvement. but after i changed the fluid the issue dissapear for a couple of weeks and the transmission downshifted smootly. i also noticed the adaptation counter for clutch B is way higher than the other ones, is currently on 158 times with a pressure fill of -1.5bar vs the other ones the adaptation counters are on the 10s or 20s. If you could give me any advice i will be forever on you debt Sr. Thanks for the videos, Keep the good work.
Thank you great video, all the Ohms matched but the GREEN (NB3) reads 24.5 Ohms. I'm hoping that's correct, what do you think ?. You’re a expert! Truly! My ZF8 jerks downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. Sometimes upshifting to 2nd. The dealership told me my fluid level was low. No leaks apparently. Could the jerking be caused by a bad valve body? Thank you
@@GaryFerraro I have but the problem is still there. I get a bang and low idle shifts which makes me wonder if it’s the valve body due to loss of pressure.
Thanks for this video Gary, very helpful as always. Question, do the internals of the mechatronics (between the two metal plates) ever fail as well? Seems like most 8HP issues are related to electronics, and not so much the mechanical components. Just figured I'd ask, as I don't see anyone ever rebuilding the 8HP's like I used to see the 6HP's being rebuilt.
@@GaryFerraro ahh gotcha. Are those still somewhat similar to the BMW versions? I've noticed my 335i has the same valve body as the 3 series, 5 series, 7 series, etc...

I'm installing this replacement in my car this weekend, but going to swap over the TCM so I don't have to deal with the coding and what not. Fingers crossed it works!
Hi Gary, this is really helpful. I am getting a hard jerk on takeoff and stop in a 2011 535i with 160K miles. Since I am second owner, so I plan to do the sealing sleeve, the filter, fluid, solenoids, as well as a few of the gaskets on top mechatronic unit. I have done this on my wife's and daughters e60 535i cars and after resetting adaptation and the relearn procedure, the transmissions drove so smooth - like brand new! However, I noticed that on the 6HPs there is a foam strip above all of the solenoids where the TCU mates with the solenoid electrical connections - I assume this is to keep fluid out of the connections. I could not tell from this video if you would need a similar foam strip for an 8HP transmission. Was it possible embedded into the 8HP TCU so it did not show up on video, or is it just not used on 8HPs? Thank you for these videos!
Hello Gary, its a good video.... I have a BMW X3 Diesel Automatic, I have a question, could you please help me to find out which solenoid in a valve body is a 2nd gear solenoid and reverse gear solenoid. Cause, I get a jerk when its kick down in 20-25 speed.

Thanks for the incredibly helpful video, Gary. All of my solenoids tested fine, but I noticed some melted plastic near the TCU chip as well as some discoloration and that "burnt electronics" smell. So I think this is probably the culprit that caused my transmission fuse to keep blowing. My question is where would I be able to find that part? Having a hard time locating one.

@@GaryFerraro Its before the 1-2 shift. So if the car is in 1st gear during acceleration there is a drop in rpm (simliar to a harsh shift) and after that the shift from 1st to 2nd gear is fine. I suspect that there is a problem with torque converter clutch lock up.
will keep that in mind, There is 1st fill and 2nd fill. First fill is with engine off, fill it til it runs out, start the car and fill it again til it runs out. Drive the car and recheck the fluid, make sure there is a steady stream coming out, then the car is full

No problems on S mode and manual. Just on drive.
Have you ever met this problem?
Any idea?
Thanks

Have you reset the shift adapts?
@@GaryFerraro thanks for your quick reply.
Yes I did. Reset and standstill adaptation are performed with diagnostic tools.
When I let the car downshift by itself, no bump . Only happens when I am using the brake pedals in D mode 5-4 only
When you reset the adapts did anything change and then go back to the way it was ?
@@GaryFerraro when the adaptation are reset and performed. No change are noticeable and the bump from 5-4 still present.
What's strange is that the downshift are smooth when you are in sport mode, manual mode and when you don't use the brake.
It occurs only when brakes are applied.
@@vbautomatic609 ok any codes in the Trans or engine, wondering if the adaption is not working, you do have an option to reset them correct? Usually something changes when they are reset
Thank you for this! There were 2 solenoids that were not changed though (a green and black one). Since everything is out, wouldn't it be recommended to change all of them? Also where can I buy quality (German) solenoids?
those are the park release solenoids, they checked out ok, they are usually good haven't seen to many problems with them. Where are you located?
@@GaryFerraro I'm outside of Chicago. I have a GA8HP45Z transmission. There are some rubber seals above the mechatronic unit (1 gasket and 3 tube-like gaskets) I'd like to replace as well. Basically anything that should be changed while I have it out. Thanks again.

Hello Gary. Your videos are superb. I have a bmw 525d f10 with zf8hp45 tranny.During acceleration form stand, the car jerks (probably harsh tcc lock up), it doesnt matter if I start from 1st or 2nd gear. The shifts after that are fine, there are no fault codes stored, adaptation values are fine. Adaptation reset and oil and filter change didnt helped. Is the problem with mechatronics or torque converter?
does this have a harsh 1-2 shift? or is it after the 1-2 shift?
@@GaryFerraro Its before the 1-2 shift. So if the car is in 1st gear during acceleration there is a drop in rpm (simliar to a harsh shift) and after that the shift from 1st to 2nd gear is fine. I suspect that there is a problem with torque converter clutch lock up.

for my 2010 Range rover??? Thanks for a great videos...
where are you located?
so how many liters of oil got it?
Awesome stuff Gary. You think you can do a video showing the fill procedure for this transmission?
will keep that in mind, There is 1st fill and 2nd fill. First fill is with engine off, fill it til it runs out, start the car and fill it again til it runs out. Drive the car and recheck the fluid, make sure there is a steady stream coming out, then the car is full
It it checked warm and running in neutral ? I could never find mention if neutral?
Hello. When I run a ZF gearbox, there is a phenomenon of jerking from D1 to D2 and D2 to D3. What is the reason?
Has this been scanned for codes? sounds like high pressure
I got a f10 2014 535i rwd that’s giving me transmission faults can I just swap it with a used one or should I rebuild it, and if I swap it how do I get it to work does it plug and work or do I need to relearn it, this is what the dealership told me “RAN SHORT TEST FOUND FAULT CODE 420321 GEAR RATIO MONITORING CLUTCHES A,B C, 4209A1 TEMPERATURE SENSOR HOT MODE1, 4209A3 HOTMODE 2. Hi Gary, my bmw g30 have a noticable shift from 1 to 2nd gear? What could be a problem?
Hi mister, great video!!! Question, I have ZF8HP55 in my Audi A6C7 Allroad 230kw. When I tested solenoid all of it shows 6.0 omhs. It means that all of it is ok or no? I think almost same like yours in video! Thanks in advance! :)
Would think they are ok, Do you have a codes for a solenoid?
Thank you so much. Could not find much information on this issue. I got the 420042 and it's pretty much the same code but a short with solenoid C. Quoted $6000 from BMW but I will do it myself.
Edit: did you have to take out the transfer case bracket in order to release the mechatronic sleeve to get the valve body out or was there enough room for you
I don't remember, you may be able to sneak it out or just move it enough to get the valvebody out
Great job👍
what do i need to screw up? I'm usually pretty good at this step.

Should have ohmed the solenoids first, so if solenoids did not fix then there is a problem with the tcm, At this point you either have to replace the valvebody/tcm or send your unit for repair. I send mine to Europe for repair, the company is called Softelectronic in Bulgaria

They are only sold as a set, i didn't want to have another issue so i changed them all but that would be up to you, you really don't have to
