The COVID-19 Fugue

  • When life gives you lemons, make lemonade... Or in my case; make a fugue.
In an attempt to make the best out of the bizarre times we live in, my musical contribution to the worldwide pandemic comes in the form of a complex, 4-plus-voice fugue, based on the subject of the ...virus itself!
With some touches of artistic liberty, I interpreted "COVID-19" as an acronym for the musical terms "C° V-I D 1-9" (as explained at the beginning of the video) which when combined, shape a rather spicy fugue subject.
It was no surprise that the subject's 'unorthodox' nature made it quite challenging to integrate it in a tonal context;...a fact, however, that posed no obstacle to two-weeks worth of quarantine-induced free time, together with some Regerian/Mendessohnian inspiration.
Putting all my music degrees in practice (and some amateur-ish editing skills in Adobe After Effects), I created a 'viral' (pun intended, hopefully) fugue, which will take you on a journey across 7 tonalities, 12 subject entries and lots of juicy modulations.
    🛈 Legend:
Subject entries can be seen in red.
Subject inversions are marked in blue.
🛈 Don't know what a Fugue is? Check this video: • How to Listen to Class...
On a more serious note, much like with many other musicians, this has been a period of reduced incomes for me. Concerts, rehearsals and lessons have all been postponed until further notice.
If you would like to support me and would like to see more projects like these, you can buy a copy of this fugue from my website using the following links:

    🛈 Notes & Acknowledgements:
    • The piece has been digitally recorded on a Yamaha CPL-645 (unfortunately given the circumstances a grand piano was not available) and visualized using the MAMPlayer (created by Stephen Malinowski).
    • On bar 25 of the video there has been a misprint: The fourth 8th note in the tenor should be a c natural.
    • The G flat and B double-flat of the diminished chord of the subject have been enharmonically respelled as F# and A respectively to better fit the tonal context of c minor.

The unsettling and eerie sound accurately depicts what going outside during this time is like. And the as the sound starts to feel peaceful and cheerie reminds me of the deaths going down and as soon as it gets intense and unsettling again is the death rates going up, George Floyd ,and the LGBTQ+ rights but as soon as the music gets peaceful again is a start of a new year and a new change. But who knows maybe I’m wrong and just dug to deep? I’ll let you decide. 🤷‍♀️

      簡単に言うとCOVID19(コロナ)を

This is such a cool fugue - I hear a definite influence from Bach's 'Musical Offering' (the theme opens with a similar rising 4 note motif, so it makes sense), but there's an inventiveness and a willingness to go for certain chord progressions that are uniquely in your own voice. Wonderful work!

Nicholas, this reminds me of Bach's Ricercar a 6 from the Musical Offering - the pattern in the first five notes of the subject, especially, and the way it all builds.... some very grand fugue subject entrances scattered throughout. It certainly seems to be written in the spirit of Bach, but I can hear Mendelssohn in here as well.... the lighter, sweeter elements for example. It seems to be driving very hard at times like Bach, and then you ease your foot off the gas pedal and a fresh light shines through. Though these mood shifts are unexpected, and I'm not sure exactly what to think - the overall emotional arc to me feels like it could use some tweaking - nevertheless it's all very well constructed and I'm very impressed with your contrapuntal dexterity. And I would love to hear this on organ or arranged for a chamber ensemble, to bring out different colors. You're a very gifted composer and I've now subscribed to your channel. Thanks so much for your own musical offering - I think Bach would be proud. Actually, the whole setup - using the letters and numbers to set up the fugue subject - is very much a Bach type of thing to do. Great job!

My god... that texture... the structure... the development... the key modulations... the inversion+normal subject in the end... the modal interchange... damn, I'm completely bamboozled, this is undeniably awesome stuff!!!!!!!!!!!! From a simple subject to a 5-part fugue, you might have put a lot of work to conceive this masterpiece

This is awesome! I love counterpoint, and it was clever how you used the letters. Reminds me of how Bach would spell out his name, w/ H as Bb oc. I'm thinkin' of writing something using the letters of my name now just for funsies haha! Terrific job!
Edit: ironically, 10 months later, I'm writing another fugal section and decided to revisit this fugue for inspiration lol.

What but fugal form could adequately express the waxing and waning of the Covid plague. Bravo composer and pianist.

True genius! When I first heard the opening theme my first thought was "no way will he be able to make this sound like a Bach fugue!" But you DID! Shows both your own genius, AND the genius of Bach, who was a master at taking strange sounding themes and weaving them into amazing fugues! Congratulations!

I always admire composers who can do anything at all with such "impossible" subjects.

It's amazing how such an atonal Melody can be turned into a beautiful figure through harmony
