      Peter, what are you talking about? The gasps and groans ARE at the end of Sleepless Nights - it's what takes the song to a fade-out (on the studio album).
      He didn't suffer any health issues or anything during this performance - he was acting, playing the roles of the characters in his songs, as he always does.
      If he did have any issues, it was timed hella well to fit with the way the song ends.

    King Diamond is one of a kind, an absolute legend. Not only because of his singing, but he was also instrumental in creating several genres of metal, including thrash and black metal. Merciful Fate was a deep influence on the entire scene and many bands emerging in the 80s, including Metallica.

    • @Kalimdor199Menegroth
      @Kalimdor199Menegroth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      He didn't create any genres at all. He may have been an influence to black metal for his stage presence, but musically, black metal and King Diamond's music are eons apart. He may have been an influence for thrash, but so was Iron Maiden, Raven, Saxon, Diamond Head and so on. What makes these bands alike? They all played a form of traditional heavy metal. And this is what King Diamond with both Mercyful Fate and solo band is. 80s heavy metal with a bit of prog in his solo albums.

    • @xyhmo
      @xyhmo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      He wasn't alone in creating those genres obviously, but he's often cited as a major influence. Being an influence and actually playing the thing isn't the same thing (though there's certainly thrash elements in King Diamond, a lot more than in eg Iron Maiden). Also keep in mind that black metal is a broad category, eg Venom and Bathory sound very different, with Venom sounding very soft by comparison, more like proto black metal, but their influence is undeniable.

    • @xyhmo
      @xyhmo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      ”Mercyful Fate were a part of the first wave of black metal, along with other groups, such as Venom, Bathory and Hellhammer.[9] Many of these groups helped establish the style upon which future black metal artists would later build.”
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal:_A_Headbanger%27s_Journey

    • @Kalimdor199Menegroth
      @Kalimdor199Menegroth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@xyhmo Just that Venom is not black metal either. They played a heavier version of traditional heavy metal, but not black metal. You can probably link them more with the birth of thrash than of black metal. They named it, but they did not define it. Also, Bathory in its early stage (first 2 albums) copied Venom. The closest thing to black metal in the 80s was Bathory's 3rd album (when they ditched their Venom diapers). That one can be somewhat labeled as early black metal. But the rest of the so called influential bands to black metal have less to do with music than with stage antics, presence, clothing, make-up and maybe lyrics.
      Actually even in terms of thrash King Diamond's music doesn't come even close to what defined thrash as a standalone genre. I can understand them being an influence, as thrash did not fall from the sky, but the music his bands play is rooted in good ol 80's heavy metal.

    • @MrKezzaRHCP
      @MrKezzaRHCP 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Kalimdor199Menegroth I would disagree with ya comment about venom/king diamond not being influential to black metal. it might not be the music as such, but the lyrical themes are what make the bands major influencers on later black metal. Venom were part of nwobhm and were incredibly dark in lyrical content compared to their peers, thus making them along with king diamond cited by many black metal artist as having a influence on what they created. In terms of instrumetation/song structure they both influenced thrash/speed metal. This being more true for Mercyful fate. I will agree with @xhymo with the fwbm comment too. we can say that they were first wave looking back, however at the time they would have just been really heavy metal haha!

    The King is a really good guy, from what I hear. His rules for the band/staff when touring is no groupies backstage, etc. His theatrics are amazing! And the neoclassical riffs from the guitarist, Andy Laroque, are second to none. The band is telling a story on the concept albums, so depending on what you listen to you, you're only hearing part of a tale. It's like picking up a book and starting at chapter 32.

      for the FS last time - Black Metal is not only about chainsaw gutsfu** guitars or goat croaking or even blast-for-satan hyperspeed drumming. BM is a higher concept that applies to multiple exressions. So MF and KD, to me, ARE BM. mR Vaughan, your description is highly accurate, very well said.

    • @Headbanger9000
      @Headbanger9000 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jimjam6710 It is falsetto but the placement is in his head register. Professionally it is called a "reinforced falsetto". Falsetto can also be used in the chest register as well but it is predominately known for being used in the head register. Falsetto is just a technique, not a range or voice register. Another way of being able to hit higher notes that are beyond your actual vocal range. It is also called counter tenoring in the opera realm and most opera counter tenors are baritone singers (like King Diamond). The difference between using falsetto (in head register) and singing in a pure mixed or chest supported head tone is the fact that when singing in falsetto the vocal folds are still loose and vibrate against each other allowing air to escape. Making falsetto typically airy sounding and in most cases (depending on the singer) weaker sounding compared to head voice that is supported by the chest since the vocal folds are completely closed off and no air is escaping. Hope this clears things up. Im no vocal coach but i am vocally trained

    Vocal coach reacts to Helloween (Michael Kiske) "Twilight of the Gods" live Hell on Wheels. If you would compare and contrast his technique with Queenryque's Geoff Tate's technique and your thoughts on why Kiske's has maintained his voice while Tate's has deteriorated.

    • @screamsfromthegrave3324
      @screamsfromthegrave3324 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it all boils down to that Kiske takes his singing very seriously..doesn't have any bad habits and is always keeping his voice in shape, he is also aware of what his fans enjoy about his singing and he's trying to be able to do as much of that as he can. Tate let himself go years ago and even as far back as the Mindcrime days he was struggling with songs live that even just 1 or 2 years before that were effortless for him. Tate loves his booze (from what i've seen over the years) and is rumored to be a smoker too so that can't be too good when you're trying to maintain that higher head voice register and keeping it clean and strong and effortless.. Plus he really just doesn't give a shit about that higher range

    • @luisgarrues
      @luisgarrues 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@screamsfromthegrave3324 thanks for the info. I got curious because another vocal coach commented that the technique Tate uses to hit his higher notes will eventually lead to voice decline. I got curious if Kiske uses the same technique since he hasn't lost his.
