I'm a novice artist and have purchased $100s in supplies based on suggestions by youtube instructors. Then I discovered TEMU and I really like most their supplies. While learning it's feels right to feel like I can practice without worrying that I'm wasting money. Thank you so much for backing us up on doing more with less. 😊
When I started painting I learnt using cheap paints, but it was to learn the techniques and learn from mistakes. As you get more confident get a few expensive paints - key ones you use a lot off. I still get cheap paints and I mix them with expensive paints and they still work fine. You will find a lot of Purists in the art world pushing new comers to buy expensive art supplies and paints only for the new artist to get frustrated and give up plus waste loads of money.
I'm a 15 yr old artist who uses pens and old notebooks and I see my cousins and classmates get so fixated on their tools, their sketchbooks, pencils, and such that they forget about practicing. I love what you said "limitations is the mother of creativity." I'm gonna use that all the time now lol. Love the vid bro❤❤
Hi ! I recommend looking at @ProkoTv for videos on anatomy, they are more of an education based art channel but they aren’t boring (in my opinion) and use humor too to teach. They break down the fundamentals and make it easy to understand
I looooove cheap drawing utensils from china … they are so so good … i prefere them mich more over over priced brand supplies. Thanks for shedding a light on it!i watched a few reels and vids from you and i think you are propably the first art youtuber i like haha
I love your video. There's a lot of great advice. Especially love that you mention the time it takes. It's easy to watch a 15 minute youtube video and think that art like what you made only took 30 minutes or a couple of hours and that you just sit down and crack out master pieces.
I love your posts Jake! Clearly been to art school, and to be taught the proper "technical way" to do things is liberating. I think Picasso said: "you have to study and perfect the rules before you can break them".
Thanks for the tip on the Marie's pencils. I just bought a bunch to try out. I use the Wolff's Carbon and wanted to try the Conte, but I'm excited to give the Marie's a go.
I use cheap and expensive oil paints - the expensive are usually whites and a few other key colours so that I can add some brightness. Black I tend to make my own mixing either various browns or Blues or crimsons. I agree I find that some cheap art materials are actually really good. I started off oil painting with the cheapest of the cheap and over time developed my key 6 main paints I always use. Got some expensive ones and plenty of cheap ones 😂. Seeing you sharpen your pencils like that is the same way I was taught by my high school art teacher way back in the 90s 😂. If he saw a sharpener it would be flung across the room into the bin 😂.
Great video! Great drawing! 15:29 that is actually my favorite tool to draw with. Favorite #2 pencil. That and a the 4-in-1 bic pen/round stick grip purple bic pen.
I think the amount that quality matters comes in waves: At the start it is mostly unimportant - you need to first get the skills. Then it starts to matter cause you have some ideas, decent enough skills, but the materials help pull it through. Then you get better and don't need to rely on the materials as you can work better with them. And lastly for the most complex expert pieces - when the idea and skills want to produce something that is just not possible without the right materials.
I agree there’s some things I wouldn’t buy from Temu is sketch paper although it looks good not really good in quality who knows how long it will actually last or it’s life expectancy same with the materials they are made from oils charcoal etc. But if you’re a beginner artists this is a great way to save money! Also Picasso used to use house paint for some of his paintings when he ran out of paint so his work is still valuable today!
I got fountain pens from Temu, some were nice some had not the best nibs but hey they were cheap and pretty 😁😁 one of them didn’t come with a converter but i was able to work it out with another pen I had. So overall it was fun using Temu pens, especially being so cheap
Y’all don’t need Temu to do this, simply go to a dollar store and get pencils, you can shave them and build up to the color you want. They also have water color pencils which work great as normal color pencils, but even better.
I don't think the conte pencil you showed in the beginning is charcoal, i have it too but amazon doesn't call it charcoal.. conte does have a charcoal pencil tho, it's the same name i think but it has a gold ring at the end of the pencil
The Conté charcoal pencils breaking breaks my heart. Ive heard it from other people and have it happen personally when using the 1710 Bs. A year or two ago I bought 5 of em and they were all duds unfortunately. And them being 2 bucks a pencil is a huge bummer when they don’t sharpen to a long taper. The only functional ones I have are 10 or so 2B 1710s with no problems at all from before I bought the duds. Not sure what’s going on with the QC but it’s very disappointing cuz I do love those pencils. Wolff’s 4B/6B carbon pencils are still great though for sharpening with a razor to a long nice taper. And I do like Marie’s charcoal pencils too. Although you really gotta lay in the tone and work it into the paper. The Wolff’s carbon and the Conté are very smooth when laying in tone
I think one important thing in learning is to not being fighting with the materials so reliability is worth paing a bit more, with charcol i haven had a problem with the .90 cents pencils if you cant afford that then art comes in second place, also at some point learning to disrespect better material is usefull to evolve, back then everything was more expensive than synthetics and toxic too lol
I imagine charcoal is charcoal for the most part. the papers are acid free so they should be fine. Being skeptical about the paints is reasonable, they'll probably yellow due to high amounts of oils.
You cant sharpen the Conte because you need a good sharpener. M&P brass sharpeners. Always use a new blade with Conte. Marie’s is not the same as Conte. Invest in a good sharpener and you will have NO problems
If you create something it is not important with what, but how. You can have super tools, but without experience and knowledge you won't create anything.
It's in the title. Also, if you really wanna stop supporting big companies that make profit from genocide/slave labor, I recommend you stop buying from coca cola, any pharmaceutical company ever, shell, apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and many others. Good luck with that
@@RaymondThePainter I get that it offended you but he isn't supporting it by buying from them. Him stopping doesn't stop hundreds of thousands from buying from these places. Unsubbing for that is pretty low
We need more stuff like this on art-TH-cam

Just so u know, there's a big risk that you could get your credit card info stolen by temu, be careful with that!
@@Mark-nh2hs so true! Thank you for good tips!

Marie’s is a good brand. I use watercolors and Marie’s has a student and Masters grade which I use and I have no complaints

I don't understand what he's talking about the entire video, but i really enjoy watching this
Somehow this rlly motivated me to draw more, thank you haha
Omg i thought it was just me sharpening the conte pencils wrong this whole time. Wasted a whole pencil trying to sharpen it lol.

It would be nice if u time-lapse the art instead if cutting it into the next step
Terraria?
