  • Educational video of me attempting to oil paint like William Adolph Bouguereau. This is a reupload- after the first version was age-restricted. Nudity in classical art is allowed on youtube for educational purposes. You can view the full uncensored version on the members only page if by hitting the join button next to subscribe. Please consider doing that because I am surely losing all the AdSense from having to upload this twice.

After using oils and painting portraits for a few years I don't look at my work as just painting instead I'm sculpting with oils and that keeps me in the mindset that I'm trying to recreate a 3d body onto my canvas and it's really changed how the finished works look.

I know the censoring in this video doesn't make any sense. But neither did TH-cam age restricting it despite allowing nudity in art for educational purposes. so I scrubbed back through and censored as much as I can along with the thumbnail.
on a real note: this is my favorite video I've ever made. I was heart broken when it got age restricted and the views instantly to less than 10% of what they were. So, you get this reupload and I really hope you guys enjoy this video and help it out by giving it a like. If you want to see the uncensored version the age restricted version is still up for channel members - consider hitting the join button to get access to that and some drawing basics tutorials.

I think it's fully automated, tbh. The problem with a site like this is, whilst I 100% agree - artist nudity is not sexual nor is it "inappropriate", but if you allow artistic nudity, people VERY quickly start to take liberties, which not only risks actual adult content leaking into the website, but also actual inappropriate/illegal content doing the same (look at Twitch, the same thing happened there, and now it's basically an adult site that has kids on it). I hope one day there's a better way, but I feel like there isn't much choice at the moment :(

I'm so sorry man, saw the uncensored version and it was super inspiring!! I love painting so much, I'm mostly self taught through studies and sketches trying to understand anatomy and dynamic movement. Something I love doing to see how well my colors are blending and melting into 3d flesh is doing all of my under-painting and skin without my glasses (I'm legally blind) and using the haziness to get a beautiful blend, then I add my details, clean it up, and do a looser impressionistic background! I love having gestural impasto frame such a soft focal point. I think viewing the painting from afar or squinting could mimic my glasses trick.

    You inspire me SO much.
Sometimes I cry with how bad I want to improve with my art. I’ve definitely improved and can call myself an artist, but I am certainly nowhere near where I could be in the future. This motivated me to keep on going, and your positive attitude and talks of continuing on and making progress gave me some peace of mind, and some anxiety over not making the right progress, but I guess you won’t always know if it’s “right”. I guess, as an artist, there is no “end point”, we can only just continue to try and improve on what we personally want to achieve with our art.

Nice video, I have a few comments. Sometimes doing that dead color or grisaille layer can be really helpful to be free when adding color. It makes it easier to model in a dead color, and then glaze over once the modeling is finished. The optical mixing also can create a beautiful effect with all the layers and glazing. Lastly, drawing with the brush like Titian, Ruben’s, Rembrandt, or Velazquez to name a few can feel more freeing than a tight academic drawing with charcoal in the beginning. Obviously, these are all just suggestions your paintings and drawings are really great!

I would love to see you try your hand at replicating ancient Graeco-Roman frescoes or encaustic paintings. Painting was actually considered the highest form of art in ancient Greece but almost no ancient Greek paintings have survived (outside of frescoes and the Fayum mummy portraits). Although mosaics were usually copies of paintings so some of them have survived indirectly in that form.

Not to disrespect the master, but when you say he had such a keen eye for every shade and every perfect color, and that he applied them masterfully on the first try-well, I mean, if you were creating your own painting rather than copying color by color, you'd have the same freedom and confidence. In fact, if Bouguereau were making this copy, he'd likely either be more forgiving about the exact shades, knowing it's more about the flow, or he'd face pretty much the same challenges.
