- The Delores Project in Denver, Colorado, has an emergency homeless shelter for 60 unaccompanied women and transgender individuals over the age of 18 who are without a safe place to stay at night. They also have 35 units of permanent supportive housing and 95 units of affordable housing for individuals and families.
Their campus was developed using trauma-informed design creating physical spaces that promote safety, well-being and healing. To start the process of healing, homeless people need a safe place that provides security and dignity.
The Delores Project is one of the best homeless services I have toured. Being able to bring people from the streets to housing in the same facility is brilliant.

I think that politicians should get their salaries docked if more than a certain percentage of people in their area are without proper homes & if this does not improve by a certain amount each year. There needs to be accountability. It is ridiculous for people to be on the street & it be costing the taxpayer extra to keep them on the streets. This destroys peoples health. Time this was sorted out.

I’m not homeless, I’m not American. But i get that there is a severe crisis not only by seeing these videos but seeing videos of what US suburbs’s in big city really are. I mean I’m not a citizen but it seems an attitudes of most civilized countries (like Italy which i live in here there’s lack of associations and I’m asking where the homeless people go?) of showing the bright side of them like the economy is growing, big cities, big buildings, big advertising company, the middle class citizens houses, the army, the police, politics, religion...But in a big system with a lot money circulating into that there are big faults even for other states economy. I know invisible people has a good purpose, I see hundreds of videos and I’m still not tired of hearing people opinion of what’s wrong with the system they live in. But when i see this video i think i don’t believe it, i’m sorry but with homeless people that are working hard and not having housing; this seems the luxury image i talked before. The people are too proactive to be true (like this comment section). If all people are happy even in these comment sections; where are the bad stuffs? I don’t think they have really touched in their lives any. They have no idea of what means understand or care about others’s problems. With the image that we give from the outside we are all philanthropists.
The way she smiles when she talks about helping these people is enough to make me warm inside

Yes, but at the same time no, i understand that maybe there's no enough money, but a shared room or apartment isn't a home, but at least it can be extremely better than the streets

I have worked in homelessness nationally for 20 years. A lot of places are like this - this is what the places look like when they first open. It costs a lot to run things things. Things to think of: Why don't the clients cook for themselves? Why are the people still called homeless if they have shared housing with all these amenities? Why do they have to call every week to keep their place? Why is it free? They can pay some. i worked at a large shelter where we modified it and charged $80/month after the first month which is free.

A couple of years ago you interviewed a fellow from Colorado who had Schizophrenia. His name was either Mark or Mike. I hope that man can find something like this shelter. He had been severely abused as a child and suffered from schizophrenia.

This is a great project. I like the idea of combining homeless shelter, permanent supportive housing, and workforce housing. I haven't seen this before. But I always have an issue with the idea of bunkbeds. For one, it reminds people of prison, and for, two, it is not safe for older adults to climb on top of a bunkbed. When I had to live in a homeless shelter and then they took us to the apartment complex, there were all these bunkbeds that were unsafe, loose, and dangerous. This is something I want to consider as I plan my own homeless shelter. However, I do appreciate this video. It is likely one of the most helpful I have watched in a long time. This is excellent. I wish they could replicate this design across major cities in the US. It would solve so many problems.

When you see trailer parks where the trailer is only 2 feet from each other and are only 10 feet by 30 feet.
There is no reason why the government could not do this, create trailer park Community of 1000 trailers on 10 acres with a dining hall, just like the army.

It also is wrong to assume receiving some income for no work means no one will want to work. On the contrary, people will be willing to work more lower wage jobs because they're basic needs are covered and all of the money they make gets saved or spent.

looking to see many more places like this around our beautiful U.S.A.... proud moments.
First, it is definitely admirable to assist those on the verge of, or are already homeless. The cost of housing is out of control, with rent/and required deposits.
Second, it is also fantastic that there are facilities like this one in Denver, which is newer, and has options for those who are in vulnerable positions. Personally, I have volunteered at a shelter in New Britain, Connecticut years ago, and intermittently donated food.
Third, however, my concerns with this type of set up are the following:
1. Who monitors the all gender bathroom ? Do individuals sign up for time ? How is that managed, if someone wants privacy ?
2. Who monitors the room with all of the beds ? Are there strict rules regarding noise, appropriate behavior, crime, and possible illness ?
3. Are there security cameras on the premise that can provide additional monitoring ?
Last, are there programs within the faculty that assist with job placement, addressing SUD/mental health issues, or can provide temporary transportation ?
Personally, I feel it is important to not only assist in the immediate need, however, depending on the ability of the individual, provide them the necessary tools to becoming financially stable, so they can leave the shelter with a possible job/career and other housing.
The "other housing" will always be a sticky part with all the housing pressures in most of the USA. I don't know this facility, but I can assure you they leave no stone unturned when it comes to additional services, with consultants or transport etc. As for the communal safety and quality, too much control is not considered particularly healthy, the place will not be full of cameras for example, not to mention that cameras help with investigation but hardly ever with prevention - plus people become experts at disabling them and evading them. You basically keep a place like this as safe as you can, but not safer. If there's a high turnover (despite their effort to provide at least weekly states), there'll be the odd rotten apple, which then will be removed no doubt. But you'll be surprised how even rotten apples have some common sense and they'll go the extra mile not to bite the hand that feeds them, when the feeding is good and the environment respectful.

My town needs this. Lost my job from sickness, someone hit my car when its been parked out of the way for almost a week, phone got stolen and my friend and his mom wanted to move out of the blue and i told my Dad and he wouldn’t let me move back in with him. I thought i was gonna be homeless and started freaking out and crying but my friends cousin is letting me stay with then for a month at least

Ingenious! Provide housing for the homeless (with some amenities), create a school-like atmosphere (with possibly some mild discipline involved) and keep 'em active with daily, non-monetary daily chores.

Gets them off the street. Tent cities lower property values, high crime, sexual assault, rats, etc. This is not a perfect solution, but it's a solution.

I’m confused.. one week?? To back out on the streets after that week? I would rather not do it for just one week.. she seems very happy for just one week. It’s just too hard to give up after just seven days.. one year should be time and make a thousand or two more of these types of housing.

Great idea. I'd like to see yearly updates on these projects to see how well they fair. Being brand new, yes it looks great, just follow up and see what time tells about how successful it turns out. Good results would be a great incentive for other places to follow suit.

It's like a Hostel but for free.
An idea I always had for the homeless who are really struggling. Maybe have them join a program where they leave the city go off into some part of the country. They can get the help and rehabilitation they need but at the same time as they progress they can join a hobby like growing crops, or learning to sew or something so that way they can make profit while they are there or maybe even get paid? Idk something I always thought about
Heres what you dont understand.. people dont care. A few do. Most could care less if they all froze to death. They dont care.
In my experience there's a 20% or 30% of guests who have mental issues that never get resolved, and even taking your medication regularly is tough with unstable housing and income. And you have a similar percentage that does not "fit" the local economy, either because of looks, health, IQ, age etc. There's some hope they'll qualify for disability, SS or pensions at some point down the line. And then there's a minority that are young or healthy or smart enough to fix their lives, but they would probably "succeed" even if you left them naked and afraid with a plastic spoon in a mountain trail in winter.
