ever since I saw it back in 1979 when I was 15, periodically I have dreams of the sets, not the alien itself, as if I was on the ship. same thing with Blade Runner, I sometimes have dreams of the sets there too.

The late but AMAZING Ron Cobb did the sets for the Nostromo whereas Giger (pronounced 'geeg-er') did everything having to do with the Alien except the chestburster which was done by Roger Christian. Giger's attempt looked like a plucked turkey according to Scott. LOL

I saw it when it was first released. They had an excellent marketing plan. The commercils advertising the movie only showed one of those eggs with outer space in the background. The voice over only said, "In space, no one can hear you scream". I had no idea what the movie was about but had to see it anyway. Scared the crap out of me. It set the standard for all future syfi moves.

I think the John Hurt character gets up first because he has the most 'get up and go'. He’s the pioneering type, the one who volunteers to be in the first group that goes out, who says 'we have to go on' when approaching the alien spacecraft, the one impelled by curiosity to go down and explore the egg chamber… Consistent character development, which is one of the keys to the movie's credibility. They are believable human types.

The Alan Dean Foster novelization describes Cain's drive to always be first and to keep going on, as his lust for riches. When Cain volunteers to be the first group to go out Dallas replies, "Yeah, that figures" because he knows Cain all too well.

You misunderstood the self-destruct countdown. When Ripley activated it, it started a ten minute countdown, however for the first five minutes, it could be overridden and canceled. When she saw that the alien was blocking the way to the shuttle, she went back and tried to turn it off, but she waited too long. When the computer is counting down the last few seconds, it's counting how much time is left to override the self-destruct. When Ripley misses the deadline by a few seconds, it starts counting down the final five minutes until detonation.

For most of you reading this, there is probably a retro cinema near you that screens a classic movie series and shows "Alien" and the sequel "Aliens" as a double-teature. I have watched that experience and both movies are spectacular on the big screen and with the theater sound. Also, did you notice Sir Ian Holm as Ash who was also Bilbo Baggins? 28:30 "What's the point?"
    Burial.
For thousands of years, sailors have "buried" their dead crewmates at sea by basically tossing them overboard (usually with a bit of a funeral ceremony, of course).
These guys are just sailors in the ocean of space and they are giving their fallen crewmate the space variation of a "burial at sea".

But in space you may need to recycle their body

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

True. Plus, having more than a hundred pounds of rotting meat and viscera lying-around tends to be very bad for recycled atmosphere. They could theoretically have stowed his body in his cryo-chamber (although we don't know how those operate, so they may not be appropriate for non-living material), but it's important to remember that these are just "space truckers", not scientists or explorers. They're just trying to finish their shift, get paid, and go home. Nobody paid to train them for anything but their very-specific role in hauling ore through space. All of this is way-above their pay-grade, part of an obscure clause in their contract that everyone going to space presumably signed (in the same way that any ship at-sea would be legally expected to respond to a distress call) but that had never, ever actually come into function before (as far as we know, anyway; what the Company knew about the Alien, and when they knew it, is a big question here. Remember that we're dealing with interstellar distances, so MOTHER is just their onboard computer with all the data it was given before they left. There's no way to talk to anyone over such vast distances without huge delays; even sending a message from Mars to Earth takes about 8 minutes. That also means that "Special Order 937" and Ash as a plant happened before the Nostromo ever left Earth).

    • @blakewalker84120
      @blakewalker84120 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@michaelccozens I agree with almost everything you said.
However, I'm fairly sure that any ship captain already has training, orders, and opinions about how to handle something like a crew member dying.
      Try it.
      Earth has ships.
Tanker and cargo ships are basically "sea trucker".
Ask some of those captains if they already know what to do and have plans in place for the death of a crewmember at sea.
      They do.

Even in the present day, burial at sea ceremonies can be done per request of an active duty or retired naval crewman upon their death. It may have been a similar last request of the futuristic space crewman to be buried in the depths of space upon his passing.

    You guys misunderstood the self-destruct.
At 41:50 you see and mother say the ship will self destruct in 10 minutes.
Then you guys started talking and missed when mother said "The option to override detonation expires in 5 minutes" - all you heard was the last two words and you thought she only had 5 minutes left.
She still had 10 minutes until detonation, but only 5 minutes to cancel it.
Again at 42:55 you hear "Option to override destruction expires in 1 minute" and assume she has only 1 minute left to escape. She still has 6 minutes.
Why is she trying to stop it?
She couldn't get into the shuttle because the alien was in the way.
So she tried to stop the destruction so she could hide and wait for it to go away or go to sleep, then she could try again.
    But she was too late.
At 43:40 Mother says " The ship will self-destruct in 5 minutes."
You said "She got another 5 minutes" but no, it's the same 5 minutes she always had (it started at 10 minutes and now it's down to 5).
She just no longer has the option to cancel the self-destruct so now she must get to the shuttle, even if the alien is still in the way.

YES!! That (among other comments - like "was he like that the whole time?" - about Ash being a robot) drove me nuts. I mean, I get it, you miss things during a movie, but they must have talked so much they missed so much of the detail.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah, it's not made explicitly clear, but the "self-destruct" here is actually just turning-off the cooling system to the ship's nuclear reactor. Once the nuclear pile reacts a certain temperature, there's no way to stop the positive-feedback loop of increased temperature increasing reactivity, which increases temperature, which increases reactivity, etc. The ship's just a bomb at that point, with no way to defuse it.

True. Kane's also right, though; contractually, they can't leave without discovering the source of the transmission, at least not without forfeiting all their shares for the current job and probably being black-balled from any future employment in the field. There's a lot of discussion around the "hyper-corp" future of Alien, where the massive Weyland-Yutani multinational essentially rules the entire planet, with governments serving more as unofficial arms of the firm. Very similar, historically, to the corporate/governmental dynamics in so-called "banana republics", or to our apparent current relationships with state-protected monopolies in all but name, like Boeing.

Still one of my favorite movies of all time. My best friend's dad took me and him to see this in '79 when it was new (right around my 15th birthday!) All we knew about it was: "In space no one can hear you scream." I still love that! My friend's dad had this to say as we came out of the theater: "Mild fright..." We laughed at him because he was visibly shaken. He was an Episcopal Priest and probably had an interesting sermon that week. I didn't go to the service so idk and never asked. lol
Now all of these actors have been in SO many movies, including many movies I like. Kane is John Hurt - Ollivander the Wandmaker in the Harry Potter films. Brett is Harry Dean Stanton -- Toot the trustee in The Green Mile. Captain Dallas is Tom Skerritt; in Up In Smoke he is Cheech's cousin Strawberry. Lambert played by Veronica Cartwright was Gus Grissom's wife in The Right Stuff (her little sister Angela played Penny Robinson in the original TV Lost in Space). Parker is Yaphet Kotto; also Mr. Big/Dr. Kananga in the Bond 007 film Live and Let Die. Sigourney Weaver is Ripley of course in all the original Aliens movies; she's also in Galaxy Quest, Dave, and in Avatar as Dr. Grace Augustine. Finally Ash was played by Ian Holm -- the one and only Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
So today, I always paraphrase Parker's line in this movie after Ash's reveal: "A robot! Bilbo Baggins is a goddamned robot!" 🤣

Hey, Ruben, Daisy and Ivy! I tried posting this under the "Aliens" reaction on Ruben's channel but it never appeared so I'm posting it here and under the "Alien" reaction so you can see it!
This is one of the best sequels ever made!
Don't stop here! Please react to the SPECIAL EDITION aka ASSEMBLY CUT of "Alien 3"! Many will attempt to dissuade you but it is essential and iconic!
Unfortunately, you didn't see the superior SPECIAL EDITION version which has the Amanda Ripley scene, the functioning colony scene, Newt's family's discovery of the derelict ship scene, the automated gun scene, the Hudson speculation about queen ants scene and the name exchange scene. Those scenes provide a great deal more context and character beats lacking in the theatrical cut. It is the version both James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver prefer.
The future Ripley inhabits is implied to be a dystopic corporatocracy. The most pervasive and powerful corporate entity is the Weyland-Yutani Company, a 22nd-century version of the British East India Company of the 17th- to 19th-centuries. It is a multinational conglomerate involved in robotics, interstellar transport and terraforming with a stake in every colony world. The Company is the TRUE VILLAIN of the Alien universe. Ash and Burke were following a secret corporate mandate to obtain a xenomorph specimen in order to profit from research and weaponization.
The colonists who venture beyond the compound like Newt's parents are prospectors who can lay a claim to any discovery they make. The Company would get a large percentage of the find but the colonist would own a piece. A valuable ore would mean a fortune! After Burke heard Ripley's story, he contacted the colony boss to dispatch someone to the coordinates Ripley had indicated in her report with no warning of danger. He must have done a little digging and found out about the Company Directive to investigate any possible sign of intelligent life and to bring back a specimen. He sent Newt's family straight to the derelict ship.
Neither Hicks nor Apone were treating Ripley in a sexist manner when she offered to help prep. They regarded her as a civilian. They were both accustomed to females in their unit such as medic Dietrich, pilot Ferro and heavy-gunner Vasquez. When she demonstrates her proficiency with the loader, they were laughing good-naturedly at her bravado and their own underestimation of her abilities.
    Some trivia:
The picture of Ripley's elderly daughter in the Special Edition is actually Sigourney Weaver's real-life mother!
The late Al Matthews, who played Sgt. Apone, was a true-blue Marine who was the first black man to be promoted to Sergeant in the Corps during his service in Vietnam!
The knife-trick scene was originally supposed to be performed by Lance Henriksen alone but he convinced director James Cameron to surprise Bill Paxton by involving him as they shot the scene! Paxton's wide-eyed terror is completely real!
Fan favorite Vasquez is played by non-Hispanic Jenette Goldstein! She goes out like a warrior and enables Gorman to reclaim his honor.
Ms. Goldstein now is the proprietress of a Los Angeles-based boutique that specializes in bespoke large-size bras! The motto of her company is, "At Jenette's, the alphabet begins with 'D'."!
Bishop's programming to not harm humans or allow them to come to harm through inaction is ripped straight from Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics!
Carrie Henn, who played Newt, never acted again but became a schoolteacher. She still maintains a correspondence relationship with Sigourney Weaver thirty-eight years later.
The late Bill Paxton, who is one of two actors in the cast who have the distinction of being attacked on screen by an Alien, a Terminator and a Predator, will NEVER be forgotten for his reading of the line, "Why don't you put HER in charge?", referring to little Newt in her oversized helmet. Lol.
The other cast member to share the sci-fi monster trifecta distinction is Lance Henriksen who played Bishop.
Ripley girding herself for battle by strapping on all her weapons and gear is an homage to Sylvester Stallone's John Rambo in "Rambo: First Blood Part 2". Audiences at the time immediately recognized the visual grammar of the scene and called it Ripley's Rambo moment!
"ALIEN 3: ASSEMBLY CUT" is a DIVISIVE film but it's an EXCELLENT entry in the series. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU SEE IT!!! Many will try to dissuade you but it is ESSENTIAL VIEWING! It's directed by David Fincher and features Charles Dance and Charles Dutton. It's brutal, fast-paced, has a solid cast, has some extraordinary scares, provides new insight into the creature, presents a fascinating dilemma and concludes the trilogy elegantly. It even has an iconic scene that became EMBLEMATIC of the entire franchise! I strongly encourage you NOT TO SKIP IT! Make sure you see the ASSEMBLY CUT (Special Edition with longer runtime). It is available on Redbox, Prime and right here on YT. "Alien Resurrection" is the optional one because it's a hot mess except for one cool aquatic sequence. The ambitious prequels, "Prometheus" and "Covenant", mark director Ridley Scott's return to the series but they are mostly good JUST for Michael Fassbender's performances. Scott demystifies the creature and unsatisfyingly attempts to address who the elephant-headed pilot of the derelict spacecraft was. A new interquel directed by Fede Alvarez called "Alien: Romulus" will be released later this year.

Hey, Daisy, Ivy and Ruben! This is one of the greatest and most influential horror films of all time!
I prefer the original THEATRICAL CUT you saw because I feel it's paced better and lacks a scene which contradicts the sequel. However, the Director's Cut boasts a moment when Veronica Cartwright smacks the cr@p out of Sigourney Weaver which definitely SHOULD HAVE BEEN in the Theatrical Cut!
Despite preferring the Theatrical Cut for the first movie, there is ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION that you must watch the SPECIAL EDITION with longer runtime of the sequel, "ALIENS"!!!!!!! There are critical additional scenes that add context to the movie and it is the version director James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver themselves prefer.
Director Ridley Scott kept the entire cast in the dark about the famous CHESTBURSTING scene except for John Hurt. Their reactions were absolutely genuine and mirrored the audience's response! Veronica Cartwright got sprayed by fake blood and fell over backward. They only filmed the scene twice. It remains one of the most ICONIC IN CINEMA HISTORY!
The PACING is deliberately slow at the beginning to acquaint the audience with the ship's geography, to demonstrate authentic-looking space travel and maneuvers, to familiarize the audience with the crew, to establish the threat posed by the creature and to generate suspense with the mystery of the derelict craft. There's a lot of rich character humor and foreshadowing in those crew interaction scenes as well as a subtext about this future society being a corporate dystopia. "Alien" is set in the year 2122.
This movie and "Star Wars" changed the future aesthetic from antiseptic cleanliness to lived-in, worn-out dinginess. The smoking is meant to convey that space travel has become commonplace enough that it is the province of workaday laymen.
The Swiss artist, H.R. GIGER, who designed the xenomorph, tapped into insectoid and reptilian features that evoke primal fear. His artwork is very bizarre, erotic and has a distinctive look called Giger-esque. The final product is an iconic movie monster that is pure NIGHTMARE FUEL! The creature's life-cycle and biology is explored throughout the series. By the way, the alien's retractable inner jaw is found in nature in a deep-sea fish!
THE WEYLAND-YUTANI COMPANY is an international conglomerate involved in robotics, interstellar travel and terra-forming. They have a stake in every colony world and are basically the 22nd-century version of the British East India Company of the 17th- to 19th-centuries. They are a ruthless corporation looking to exploit or weaponize the xenomorph for profit regardless of the negative consequences. The Company is the TRUE VILLAIN of all the Alien movies. In the "AvP" films, you actually meet the company founders before their merger, Mr. Weyland and Ms. Yutani.
This crew is not a group of explorers, scientists or colonists. They're just SPACE TRUCKERS hauling rocks. This was a First Contact situation they were wholly unqualified for. Hence, all the bumbling and bad judgment calls. Their chief concerns were company policy and pay inequity. Ripley was the only one with the willingness to make difficult command decisions that would have saved all their lives except for Kane's had she not been undermined by Ash. Of course, Ash was privy to a secret corporate mandate.
Like most Captains, Dallas had an inherently CALM DEMEANOR. By minimizing the situation, it prevents both him and the crew from panicking. You can tell he's very worried because he seeks counsel from Mother. He also acknowledges his culpability for the predicament by preventing Ripley from volunteering to go into the shafts and by shouldering that burden himself. He accepted this task not even knowing if fire would be effective! His last act is a rather valiant gesture and I always feel bad for him despite his initial missteps.
Parker is MY FAVORITE supporting character! Yaphet Kotto played him to the hilt! He's the blue collar EVERYMAN who just cares about payday and who enjoys deliberately antagonizing his superiors but ends up sacrificing himself for a fellow employee. He's also the only one who made a move on the chestburster before being stopped by Ash!
Some viewers strongly believe the alien raped Lambert! This is nonsense. The PREHENSILE TAIL probably drew her closer to itself so it could mouth-punch her with the retractable jaw. Those viewers aren't mistaken for perceiving phallic eroticism, though, as that was Scott's intent.
The giant elephant-headed alien pilot of the derelict spacecraft is one of the GREAT MYSTERIES of the franchise. Was he a zoologist, a bio-warfare specialist, an exterminator, a trader in exotic organisms, a waste disposal tech or a trucker like Ripley's crew? No one knows.
Sigourney Weaver became a FEMINIST ICON because of this movie. Ripley is one in a long line of strong female characters that have been showcased in sci-fi and fantasy dating back to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars, in 1912! There's not a man I know who wouldn't follow Ripley into hell.
You must see the SPECIAL EDITION of "Aliens" and the ASSEMBLY CUT of "Alien 3" because those versions greatly enhance both films.
If you intend to see the "ALIEN vs. PREDATOR" films, then you need to acquaint yourself with the PREDATOR franchise. The first is an action classic with Schwarzenegger. Danny Glover's underrated urban-set "Predator 2" features some memorable set pieces. Dark Horse comics explored the crossover concept inspiring Hollywood to make two crossover films with moderately successful to excellent results. They're fun and exciting guilty pleasures with the second one, "ALIENS vs. PREDATOR: REQUIEM", being particularly lean and mean. There is also a "PREDATORS" film produced by Robert Rodriguez that is definitely worth a look. "THE PREDATOR" (2018) REBOOT, however, should be considered extremely optional as it nearly killed the franchise! "PREY" is an excellent 18th-century-set prequel to the original film that was released on Hulu! The Alien films have a RICHER SUBTEXT while the Predator films are more ACTION FARE but they're both fun sci-fi thrillers. Below is a VIEWING ORDER and an INTERNAL CHRONOLOGY:

Not that it matters much, but:
Venus is a rocky planet like the one they landed on, with a toxic and corrosive atmosphere. Venus has no rings.
Saturn is all gas except for a core deep inside made mostly of molten metal - there is nothing to land on or walk on.
The planet they landed on in the movie is not a planet; it's a moon orbiting a gas giant like Saturn.
It's only called LV-426 (in the next movie, not this one) so it doesn't have a classical name in the movies, but in the novel it is named Acheron.
It is smaller than earth but just about as massive so gravity is nearly the same.
There is obviously an atmosphere but it is not safe for humans to breathe.
It is located in the Zeta Reticuli star system, nearly 40 light years from earth.
The planet is fictional but the star is real.
In fact, it's two stars, a binary star system, bright enough that you can see them without a telescope.
You're talking about being "in our universe."
    The universe is everything.
Billions of galaxies, each with billions of stars.
Our galaxy is the Milky Way, which has about 100 billion stars.
Our sun is one of those stars.
Zeta Reticuli is two more of those stars, very very close to us.
Our star (the sun) is called Sol and has a Solar System consisting of 8 planets. Earth is the 3rd planet and Saturn in the 6th planet om this Solar System.
All of this is contained within our one and only universe (that we know of - if there are other universes, we cannot see them or detect them).

Obviously, one of best movies ever made. This movie is almost flawless. However, I do have one issue. I just want someone to explain to me the reasoning behind why they designed a ship, that carries 7 crew members or more, to have an escape shuttle that won't sustain any more than 2 crew members. What sense does this make? So if something happened to the ship, and the ship was about to self destruct, and they all had to escape on the shuttle........what......are they gonna draw straws or something to see which 2 get to go, and which 5 will stay behind and die????

    • @kevinpogue7294
      @kevinpogue7294 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

From what I read somewhere, the ship is suppose to have two shuttles. It may have only one because of corporate negligence, budget cuts, what else. Maybe it's a Boeing type of situation. It's like the Titanic not carrying enough life boats.

    • @jeremybr2020
      @jeremybr2020 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@kevinpogue7294 2 shuttles would still only be good for 4 people. And the main reason the Titanic didn't have enough lifeboats was because of aesthetics. They wouldn't have that problem on the Nostromo. They could care less about aesthetics. It's all practical. There's really no way to justify it. H R Giger was the artist behind "the Alien" creature. It was inspired by nightmares that he would sketch out upon waking.

AND YOU THINK THIS IS JUST A MOVIE ?
Revelation 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

love this movie! it still pisses me off that no one apologized to ripley for just trying to do her job and follow protocols. ESPECIALLY lambert. she got what she deserved for slapping ripley.

Now that you saw the brilliant Alien original screen adapt, NOW you should watch the 'Director's ext cut', same goes for Cameron's "Aliens" sequal. And also see "Event Horizon".

This movie and a fairly large handful of others are why us Gen-X are as nuts as we are😂👍fun fact:..the ending "bikini" scene?..Sigourny was SOOO hairy they asked her to shave and she refused (the 70's man😅)..it took them WEEKS in editing to "trim things up)...they were completely pissed😆🔥🤘 Ripley...the original woman badass😀🤘Alien 2 is worth the watch also 👍
