- In the move from BS4 to BS6, the Skoda Rapid has ditched its old 1.6 MPI petrol and 1.5 TDI diesel engines in favour of a 110hp 1.0 TSI three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. It also gets a new 6-speed manual gearbox and a torque converter automatic will follow later. There are a few more updates too, but is that enough to breathe new life into this ageing midsize sedan. Hormazd Sorabjee drives it to find out just that.

The base Rider variant is extremely value for money!!
Its almost 10 yr old now..its not offering that other rivals are offering
@@Saahilll but build quality is better than its rival in this segment. And don't forget it is proper sedan more than 4 metres long...around 4.3metres in length.

Looks like one of those after market Chinese head units with a skoda skin on Android. Used one of those they're terrible. Connecting to hotspot on one of the more premium sedans is unacceptable. Cost cutting gone too far.
Dated dashboard with the terrible infotainment system is surely going to hurt its sales

If you're an enthusiast and actually enjoy driving feeling all that excitement as you press the accelerator, then you don't give that much importance to infotainment and mileage or other bells and whistles. As he said the fundamentals are right and thats all matters. Practical car which is fun to drive around.

This same car has been competing with the 3rd generation then 4th generation and now 5th generation Honda City. I really feel bad for the sales guy, they are slamming doors and hoods to convince buyers for a very long time now.
If u really feel Honda City is a great car then type City vs Nano accident, that will b ur answer, my Rapid saved me from 2 major accidents, Someone who loves safety of himself & his family will buy Rapid. Moreover how is City in driving??? Drive any VW cars, give me the feed back🤣🤣🤣🤣( proud owner of Rapid DSG & Octavia VRS)......

@@joyjitbhaumik225 come back when you have a dsg failure and has to shell out over a lakh to change the transmission system. No doubt vw and skoda are great cars but they aren't as reliable as it's Japanese counterpart, isn't as spacious either. Each car has it's own benefit. A man with a family to carry would choose space over driving dynamics.
the thing i like about the whole vw group cars is their minimalistic design.

Finally Skoda Auto and VW is trying to hit the right spot by introducing newer engines which are lesser in CC but generates almost equivalent or more power than the older engines. The main reason to do so must be the fuel efficiency. Launching Market specific products is very necessary if they want to sustain in the market. Their products are rock solid all they need is localisation of parts so that the cost of ownership can be brought down. Also they should try to have more touch points so that it can reach to the masses. In the newer upcoming models which are based AIO-MQB Platform they should try to give more features as the competitors. In my opinion skoda have done a tremendous job by launching Rapid rider at ₹7.49 lakhs (ex -showroom).

Nice look Hormazd. I m a fan of Autocar since its first edition was launched. In 2000 Delhi autoexpo I got chance to meet u at Autocar stall . U haven’t changed much. Keep it up. Coming towards New TSI Rapid it would be nice if skoda would add DSG automatic gearbox and keep its base model on road price under 10.0 lac. I m sure it will beat competition. Trend of automatic cars have already begun.
DSG would be a welcome addition ( considering people loved it in POLO inspite of being priced high) but keeping on road at 10 with DSG is impossible. Will atleast be 11 i guess for the rider variant. Also, will they provide DSG on base variant will be a question. It would only on onyx onwards or may be only on monte carlo..
VW going to Remove due to reliability issue and will be replaced with 6 speed torque converter
Maruti offers new tech in the form of lowered safety and weaker metal every year. And thats what indians love. I am happy since i have a 2010 VW Polo, so even if a Baleno crashes into me I would be safe and maybe do a bumper replacement in the worst case.
I don't know why people don't go for skoda and VW cars!
They are extremely value for money cars that are built to last!
People always speak about High maintenance cost but when you really compare it to the rivals in long term you would see how reasonable it is!

This or Vento will be my next car.
I was madly waiting for this cars review. I believe there's no point in buying a higher variant. An aftermarket rear view camera touch screen, reverse parking sensors is all I need. Rest I don't care much. Also I'm surprised to see a later launched car is being reviewed first but the cars previously launched such as the facelifted Nexon, new Nissan kicks with that 1.3L beast, etc are still not being reviewed. Let's hope you bring all of that soon.
For Skoda: No replacement for TDi, as they are jst Magical, Powerful and Frugal, which nothing can replace. So, Skoda needs Diesel as soon possible, or else will vanish off from market. Am loyal Skoda user since 2001 and missing Diesel badly. So, Skoda pls hear the loyal customers as we are forced to switch brand for Diesel.
Small diesel engines will most likely be banned in various countries to reduce pollution and global warming.
The question in the title was whether it can replace the TDI. With the fuel consumption figures stated towards the end of the video it is clear that it does even come close. A small family sedan is mostly all about cost/km of ownership. Running costs are a huge part of this cost for cars in this price segment.
I just bought rapid rider and i am loving it. Complete value for money.

It might be no nonsense...but it's dated
Same old car with limited features and old looks but with tag of premium interiors.....these features are now a days available in Maruti Delta models or Hyundai's mid trim variants also have more features. Added to VW family's cost of ownership add icing to the cake.
Skoda and VW could have developed a newer 1.2ltr engine either naturally aspirated or turbocharged for sedans and for hatchbacks and compact sedans they could have gone with the newer 1.0ltr turbocharged engine.Although this newer engine is not bad at all it delivers what a buyer expects from it but as compared to competitors they are offering 1.5ltr petrol engines so they also could have gone for a bigger engine which is fuel efficient as well as more powered.
Prakhar Sinha the new tsi has been given more power output than the outgoing 1.6 petrol engine and even 2-2.5 kmpl more fuel economy , as for power only Verna turbo petrol is more powerful and that also is a 1.0 turbo dct
Oh..1.6 ltr downsized to 1.0 ltr..can't imagine this small engine in a sedan..is cost cutting reason?

I own a 1.6 tdi done 1lakh kms, and still going strong, rapid is not about the bells and whistles, it's for the sheer drivability and handling, so if you are looking for a no nonsense car it's the best in its segment, it can do a 170 on a chennai Bangalore highway without a fuss with great stability, the rapid used to be front heavy due to the heavy 1.5/1.6 litre Diesel, now with smaller more petrol at front will make the handling more sporty

The car needs a generation update not facelift.
The all new rapid is ready it is already launched globally. Most probably their factories are still not ready to manufacture vehicles based on AIO-MQB platform and thats why it is still not launched in India also this is the only reason due to which they are importing Karoq as a CBU.

In our country we have really good brands like Skoda, Volkswagen, Ford like... but herd mentality people go for safe low maintenance car and end up buying unsafe cars.

Why hatchbacks it should be compared with compact sedans because while comparing with the hatchbacks Rapid is always going to win if Drivability is the sole priority of the buyer and not the features.
Rapid will eat them even at zebra crossing. So no comparison.

City KPL is not at all confidence inspiring...that too in 2020. Is there any cng option available ?
With hyundai and maruti we get only good engines yes they are Powerful, silent, refined etc etc.. But.with vw, skoda we get good complete car... perfect elegance and of course gentlemen car.

What is engine rpm @ 100km/hr? Very high rev means high wear at long trips!soon prone to less compression! This engine might be best suited for city with a hatch&
No worries. It can keep at 100kmph with 2000 rpm. Matching with diesel engines

saeesh25 that special features a “tsi” engine the word tsi only is enough for people to know and the build quality is much much better than a similarly priced Maruti baleno or Dzire , Honda amaze , hyundai aura or i20 at 7.5 lakhs

For the 1st time the European Car group has realised to survive in India we got to offer base model at least at affordable Indian price with 4 years free service labour & 4 years Warranty. Skoda Rider 1.0 TSI price with all safety features & built quality might attract many buyers over premium hatchback like Baleno, i20, Swifts, etc...
Actually the rider variant is priced for what it's really worth. Other variants are just way to ambitious than what they offer. Hyundai verna sx would blow it out of water when feature list is considered. Agreed Skoda offers turbo engine and sorted dynamics, but please let us agree that it's a aged product and can't really stand in same line as the others
If they offer DSG from base model and keep proper pricing and add few required features like engine start stop,cruise control,navigation, it would sell in good numbers!

Not only for me we indians use a car in city and highways. So in future make a compact sedan of length 13 feet and width of same 5.6 ft.

An enthusiast will buy rapid, and a buyer will buy a verna or city, for me rapid is a emotion.
This Monte Carlo version costs 15 Lacs on road Bangalore!!.. I don't think the higher variants of Rapid are value for money.. esp considering the design is old particularly the interiors.. even certain key features missing for that kind of money!..
While the 1.0ltr Turbo petrol is exciting to drive.. the poor bottom end torque combined with lower displacement will make it a dud carrying passengers on full load esp in hills..

I am eager to know If this new version still scrapes on speed breakers. The value of ground clearance is not a direct indicator of ability to go over speed breakers without scraping. Older ones scrape on every other breaker if ppl are in back seat.

After 2000rpm you won't feel any power lag.
@@Prakharsinha07 I am currently having the 1.5L vento tdi and have also driven the new 1.0L tsi version like in this rapid.I know that a petrol engine could not be compared to the diesel and i surely agree with the fact that there is punch after 2000rpm but it has become more linear now. I personally liked the mid range punch.😂
TDI can never be replaced. Punch is on different level

Simple design makes her elegant
I have rapid 1.5 tdi diesel with dsg. Diseal engine is so powerful and fun to drive with dsg. It has alloy wheels and 1 inch bigger tyres than basic version. Just drove 1.0 petrol of my friend. And sorry to say that this is no way near to the power and performance of Tdi 1.5 beast.

SKODA Rapid Plus inside dashboard is ditto of VW Polo. I had VW Polo ,
then I decided to go to SKODA Rapid Plus , but now my disliking point is
only with the dashboard in which i feel bore with same inside scenario
of VW Polo's inside.
No way in hell TSI petrol can match up with powerful TDI Engine.
At 5:25 u defined a real difference for drive enthusiasts .... tdi rocks any day

How important could be Sunroof in mid-sized sedan as such? Instead they should concentrate on providing functionality like powered driver seat with memory function, at least in top spec variant.

Can anyone comment on how reliable a small capacity 3 cylinder turbo petrol can be. Surely they are put through extreme test and stuffs like that but how is it in long term. In a way - is a bigger naturally aspirated engine better in terms are maintaining/ problems that may arise in longer run? considering you are planning to use it like 12- 15 years
