    I'm considering starting or buying a towing business. Is there more to it than meets the eye or is it pretty straight forward?
    I've been in hvac for the last 5 years and it was WAY more complicated than I expected...

    • @cashtows
      @cashtows  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For me, towing is easy. I don’t think it’s difficult but you really need to pay attention to what you’re doing and have a system in place for everything.
      I’ve worked with some companies who are just stuck in their ways and refuse to try another way. They typically quit before their renewal and continue to be unsuccessful.
      I think it just comes down to who you are as a person. There are a TON of headaches in this business, but if you know what you’re doing, you can make a lot of money. Choosing the wrong truck, providing only certain services, ignoring phone calls, not having systems in place, and being impatient are the top reasons I see most companies fail.

    • @cashtows
      @cashtows  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great Question! I am Level 2/3 Wreckmaster Certified and during the class, the instructor explained that there is no reason to put the vehicle in park during transport. Why? Because you're supposed to secure your load well enough that in the event of a rollover, you won't lose your load. So whether it's in park or neutral, it shouldn't matter as long as you're securing your load properly.

    • @cashtows
      @cashtows  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fredc8618 I will make a video on that this summer. My equipment is very well maintained and I'm very experienced. That doesn't mean that things won't happen but I would say that 9/10 times, when the vehicle goes rolling down the bed, it's operator error. Guys who have had a car roll off the end of their bed, most likely are not using the winch and just drive the vehicle up the bed. This should NEVER be done for multiple reasons, safety being #1.

    • @cashtows
      @cashtows  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can’t say I’ve ever used a second line. Ive never broke a winch line personally but have heard stories of the winch breaking and unspooling. I personally think that if you break a 3/8” steel core or fiber core when operating a light duty wrecker or rollback, you’re doing something wrong. Also, I don’t trust the screw in eye bolts from BMW, Audi, etc. I’ll soft strap a control arm before I use those.

    • @cashtows
      @cashtows  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They are but if the lower control arm can handle smacking a pot hole doing 70mph down the road, I assume it would be strong enough to pull the vehicle up the bed. I always grab both drivers and passenger control arm so that the weight is spread out. I've been doing it for years and have never had a problem.
      Only thing is that you have to laydown and really reach under there sometimes. Like you said, "good luck trying to find a control arm" can be a real issue when working a winchout or poor contions. I typically charge more for these vehicles because of this and other liability reasons.

    If you have a fuel leak what type of tow truck should be used, the garage is about 4 miles away. I live on a narrow dead end road so I’m concern how they are going to loaded the vehicle since the Blazer is facing forward and there is no way to get in front of it? Can they put it on the flat bed facing backwards, or doesn’t it matter? Never had anything towed before so I’m concern.

    • @cashtows
      @cashtows  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If it’s leaking fluids, flatbed is the way to go as it’s easier to contain. They should be able to load backwards, making sure nothing will be damaged by pulling backwards. Sounds like it will be a slow transport, not getting on any highways. Should be an easy hook but every situation is different.

    • @cashtows
      @cashtows  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I like to think of it as a balance beam. As long as you have the weight level, you’ll be fine. Things to be aware of when pulling backwards is damage to mirrors, tonneau cover, front bumper, etc. Vehicles are not designed to be driven 60+ mph backward, more liability for you as a driver.
      With that being said, I do it all the time…EXCEPT CONVERTIBLES!!! Don’t ever haul a convertible backwards, the rear window can easily blow out.

    Does raising “the feet” put more stress on the truck? I struggle with steep driveways where the feet hit the concrete and prevent me from moving back. Thanks

    • @cashtows
      @cashtows  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I plan on making a video on this in the future.
      The only way I take on a steep driveway, if I attempt it at all, would be to back up at an angle to the driveway. The steeper the driveway, the more of an angle. Get one rear tire up on the driveway and then crank the wheel to straighten the truck out. Continue backing up and let the other wheel roll up on the driveway. By backing only one wheel on first, hopefully it will get the feet high enough in the air to clear the driveway once the other side rolls on. I hope I explained this well enough. It's a lot easier to show you.

      The 4 points can be any mix of wheel straps, chains, or tie downs as long as the equipment you’re using is rated correctly. Most of my equipment is rated for 3,400lbs+ each.

      Thanks for the clarification and I'm sorry this happened to your van.
      First question I would have is did the tow truck have air ride suspension in the rear? If so, he could have forgot to dump the bags, so when the rear wheels left the bed, it took the weight off and acted as a spring board slamming into the bottom of the van.
      I'm actually surprised by the amount of damage this caused. Unless he drove the car off the bed, which is not the proper way to tow, I don't know why the bed would shoot up that fast, ESPECIALLY with the front wheels still being on the bed. It's one of those things where I would have to be there to see what was going on.

    Didn't see you put the car in park when you had your first strap on and on some cars you should lower a window some cars will lock if the key is on and then you have another problem plus if you don't carry a lock out kit then what I think your video is a good training vid but when you are showing the hook points you should show what goes where the mini j the r hook the t hook because you have the right vehicle to work with using the cluster bridal just saying

    • @cashtows
      @cashtows  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey! Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it!
      I didn’t put the vehicle in park because I transport in neutral. My question to you would be: Why do you tow in park? You need to have 4 points secured, if done correctly, the vehicle will not go anywhere. This is taught in most tow truck training programs such as Wreckmaster.
      I also leave the key in the ignition for 3 main reasons. 1. Most vehicles will not allow you to pull the key from the ignition if it’s not in park. 2. If the key is in the ignition and turned back so accessory is off, the vehicle will not lock. 3. It prevents me from leaving the key in my pocket, where in the past I’ve forgot it, and then I have to drive back to the drop off location to drop the key back off.
      I ONLY use the mini J, big J, or soft straps. The rest of the cluster gets ground off and thrown in my scrap metal pile. I realize this may be controversial but it works for me and does not, in any way, decrease safety during transport.
      Everything gets gently snugged down with the winch once I’m finished securing. My loads don’t shift or roll around using my method.
      Hope this cleared some things up for you!
      STAY SAFE OUT THERE!!

      @cashtows wreck masters don't show you everything I was watching a video from wreckmaster about loading a car on a flatbed it was a Cadillac with a long back end you know the bumper gonna scrape what should you do not worry about it or use wood plus putting it in park Will keep the car from rolling away if in a accident or when your straps rip because when you think the straps are tight they will stretch and loosen when you stop and go in traffic and don't say it hasn't been done no matter how long you been towing your still learning

      @cashtows  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Why tow in park?
      It takes more time to put it in park and then back into neutral when loading and unloading.
      As long as you’ve got 4 points secure, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
      Thanks for watching, greatly appreciated!

    • @cashtows
      @cashtows  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes I’m using an 8 point tie down system but you need to secure 4 points of the vehicle. If you only secure one front corner and one rear corner, that’s only 2 points. You need to secure 4 points of the vehicle in order to be secure.
