Something that I was taught while going through flight training: _"If in doubt, power out."_ Basically if something is going wrong while landing, give it some power and re-assume a safe altitude to figure stuff out. Your drone is much safer in the air than it is near the ground.
Ironically, I had better advice: If in doubt freeze, PermaFr0st, freeeze. Stop all movement. Then you have some breathing space for your next move. Even when auto landing, press the throttle up enough just to hold it still.
one piece of advice- when I have a large space I let the drone land by itself. when the space is small, I cancel return to home once the drone is near and then manually land slowly and gently ..
There are a couple of advantages to the RTH. I use it like James, at times, to get to LOS (near or far) and land manually. There are a couple of shoots I had where I took of from a covered balcony and obviously RTH would not work including landing. So like James said, cancel nearby and take over manually. Another thing I think I found out is that the Mavic has more "return power" when RTH is activated, more so then sport-mode, in high winds. I was in several (really !) high-wind-situations and was struggling hard to get my Mavic back, to the point where I gave up and as a last resort hit the RTH button. Still going in the same direction, the Mavic all of a sudden had more power/speed coming back then I was able to provide manually in sport-mode. Not that I aiming to be in that situation again, I found it interesting and definitely something I want to try again on a windy day in a better/controlable area (not flying over a Caribbean ocean, although ground wind speeds were fine !). Certainly something to explore !
Another tip that some may not know: The Mavic’s Pause button can be a drone-saver. Learn to press it Before you go into Panic mode. Practice using it for stopping any operation quickly. Piloting is like motorcycling. You have to "know your exits" at all times. When I'm riding I'm mindful of ditches, guard rails, etc. that I DON'T want to go toward in an emergency. On a motorcycle, though it is counter intuitive, splitting lanes is your safest default. When piloting elevation is your safest default. But you have be mindful of obstacles overhead. You should plan to launch and land where there are no overhead branches, wires, etc. If you get nervous ELEVATION IS YOUR EXIT. That's counter intuitive because you want to be safely on the ground.
Hey, man, thank you very much! I have bought Mavic two days ago, and I crashed it once, which I will explain. I have been looking forwards to buying one since they gave it out, but it wasn't available here in Iran, and later that it was, it was very expensive. So I managed to buy one recently.I fly very carefully since I have investigated a lot and seen a lot of videos about it. So it wasn't because I am a newbie. I was trying to fly it from one room to another, in the house, and in BEGINNER's mode. I flew very very slowly & carefully, but it suddenly moved towards the open door and hit it. Today when I asked the seller, who is an expert, too, he told me the reason: the door frame is metal, so when it came forward and reached the frame, the sensors mixed up, because of the metal frame, and it moved towards the door. An interference in the waves and sensors! I just had not thought about such a thing! I wrote it here, for I thought it may be beneficial for someone else, too. One more thing: I knew it takes a picture to get back home and land later, but I had no idea I must fly it ten meters up, then move to other directions, so that at 10 meters high it takes the picture! I just knew it takes a picture, but had no idea at what height! Thanks a lot for sharing this. And your area seems to be a suburban area! I loved it! I am in a suburb of Tehran which was a quiet and good place before, but now it has been densely crowded and noisy! Your film reminded me of our place in the past! Good days which are gone! Thank you!
Awesome information. I've watched tons of videos from other drone users and you're the first to explain that you need to be in the air to set home so that RTH works properly. Everyone sets home place while it's sitting on the ground.
Good info and thanks for the RTH test. I knew taking off to 30m was important, but I didn't know it would be the difference between 3" and 8' !! Glad your Mavic is ok.
Amazing! Today I stayed un a motel in Reedsport OR on my way to Sacramento. I offered to take aerial shots of the motel because they are new owners. I lifted to about fifteen feet, made a pics, rose another ten feet - another pic and a few more from different angles, And then RTH. I too noticed it was not coming to the spot it departed from and instead of hitting the pause button I moved it toward me as it was about to land in traffic. A bit more panicking and as it was about a foot off the ground I hit the forward toggle and it almost made it up the driveway but skidded for about twenty feet. Your demo was very timely. As I now recall I crashed two other times and upon reflection the reason for those crashes were the same. Now thanks to you I can avoid future crashes./
That's a good video. It's not easy to admit you made a mistake. A lot of little girls who pretend to be men have a problem with that. Also, you figured out what you did wrong and passed it on. I'm glad I watched your lesson. I shall endeavor not to make the same mistake!
I'm a new Mavic owner, having only flown it once. Before I got delivery I downloaded the manual and read it cover to cover and watched dozens of videos. There's so much info I guess it's easy to not remember everything. I didn't remember reading about the 30 meters. This is great information to know. With all of myself gps quads, I typically just go up 10 feet when taking off to be sure everything is ok first. Thanks for this.
I've built up the habit of hand launching and catching it. I got to practice this in the winter as I didn't want the Mavic pro on the ground coz of the snow. I hit the return to home feature but as soon as its within visible range, I take over and do everything by hand.
Jose Ledesma watch them finger tips...chopped mine and got lucky it only took the skin off! Was worried to look at it it hurt so much haha! Seriously, buy a foldable matt or something. Not worth the risk imo. Them props are sharp!!!

Landing manually is actually quite easy. Just practice in open spaces to feel really comfortable before trying to land in a smaller space. And luckily the Mavic is very good at hovering without drifting when in GPS mode. Also, the Mavic does actually come with 2 sets of spare props just in case of mishap.
After playing with my new drone outside, I wanted to play with it more in my kitchen because it was bitterly cold. Based on the performance outdoors I thought it should be ok. But I tried to land via RTH, and it drifted a few feet and attacked a couple patio blinds haha. I think it could have been GPS drift. There is so much to learn about this Mavic....will take months to learn all the functions.
Good demo. I see so many people complaining that the precision landing isn’t working for them, and they simply haven’t “RTFM”! I read the manual for my Mavic Air 2, and the precision landing has always worked perfectly, within a couple of inches.
Let's push DJI to add voice confirmation that the image for precision landing (that's the feature you show on your video without mentioning it ;) ) is recorded. I found it's not always obviously if it was recorded or not.
I was going to give you the needle for painting an X on your driveway but when you said "go Vikings" I realized you were a righteous dude and far above reproach. Great video by the way.
I'm a new owner. Thanks for sharing. I have been keeping my finger over the pause button as it comes in for landing just in case something goes wrong. I figure it gives me some time to avoid panicking and pushing the wrong buttons!
When I have a crash and the video still ends up on TH-cam (almost all of them do!) I fess up right there in the description including whether or not it was "pilot error" ("I fv¢k€d up") -- no need to sugarcoat things or otherwise obscure the truth. :-)

I bought my Mavic Platinum Flymore a few days ago and absolutely LOVE this thing. How steady it is even in a decent breeze!!! I'm an old school RC'er: Planes, Jets, EDF's, Cars, Helicopters for the best part of 28 years now. Quads.. well... I should have gone to something much more quality before my confidence in quads/drones was eroded. I feel my biggest issue, is trust..... I was going from cheap $80-$120USD Quads with cameras to this thing. $100 drones DO NOT handle like this. They suck, especially in breezy conditions. Even though it's a few years old now..The Mavic Pro: it's GOD LIKE compared to toy quads. Biblical attitude and altitude hold... and even though 85% of my flights are by line of sight, (What I'm used to) I'm really loving the confidence the Mavic Pro is giving me. Really looking forward to trusting that camera and sensor and GPS info I get on my screen.... as scary as it is.. Love it!! I live in the New England area , my first DJI phantom 4 crashed sustaining heavy damage to shell , camera came off the gymball . I was recording my daughter trough walking trough the woods at about 6 feet off the ground , and 6 feet away , then I increased the altitud to 12 feet flying through trees , depleting the battery juice , suddenly the drone will not respond it started to fly higher , I panic press the return mode on , to have it crashed on to a oak tree branches . One thing to take in consideration is that sensors avoidance mode will not register branches with no leaves .
I feel the same situation my mavic platinum did the same. When the battery critically low it will auto RTH (default setting), thus it climb to RTH altitude. you still have full control over it. when it climb by itself, just pull down the throttle and auto RTH will be canceled. (than land it manually) Never far away when battery only 30%

I usually take off on automatic and let it hover at 3 to 4 feet until it says home point has been updated. Then I fly away. I never had any issue with the return to home. Your accident might have been the un defined take off point (a glass table). Marking the take off point makes it much more accurate for the RTH function to operate. I use a colorful pad marked with the letter H available on line for purchase. Also make sure if you have not physically moved from your location when you took off to hit the RTH that is on the controller and not the RTH on the DJI Go app on the screen. This RTH will bring it back to where the controller is and not where it took off from. This is useful if you have physically moved and want to land the craft next to you. Hope is of help. Fly safe.
I want to say the mavic will hover 4 ft above take off and collect home point. it will say it also. I think if you just take off and start flying then you will have a problem.

Great video! I am new too but for what I heard, I think you are pointing the antennas in the wrong direction. They should point towards the sky and not in the way you showed in this video. Good tip! If you dont point up towards the sky then you could loose connection after 1.5 miles. Greetings
Read the manuals it's says when flying in front ,behind,and sides of your self you out the antennas they way you are saying. When it is above you,you out the antennas they way he has.
Return to home won my first crash as well. I was flying very low attitude around my yard with the low battery warning going off. The mavic was only 20’ from me so no biggie. Then return to home took over at 10 percent. The drone tried to ascend to 200’ before returning to home. Unfortunately I was flying under a tree canopy. Hot mess! Instant respect. This thing is not a toy. Don’t get too confident as I did.
Mavic Pro uses GPS like what's in a car or cellphone. The reason for ascending to 33.5 ft or 10 meteres is the downward VPS takes pictures of the ground and records/caches them so that it can return to its take off position and land more accurately. Taking off straight away your skipping that step and purely relying on GPS or a small sample of the ground. RTH is something that should be used on a long flight or emergency where you can intervene but this is a good idea. As the Mavic more accurately records the take off point. Even a longer hover over the take off point will help.

A lot of people say "buy extra props". I say buy prop guards. If you hit an object at high altitude for example.. in most cases it will just bump into the obstacle and not come down falling from the sky. The guards do not interfere in any significantly noticeable way with the way or amount of time it flies

Little bit wrong on the info. It's only 6 meters and the Mavic will do this for you. When you click the take-off button and the Slide to Take-off pops up, there is a little checkbox just above the slider for "Precision Take-off". If you check this box and then slide to take off the Mavic will fly up vertically 6 meters and take a reference picture noted by a small double beep on the controller when it's done so. Your precision landing point is then set. From my experience it lands almost exactly where it takes off when you do this. Every time for me so far. Also, I think what you're seeing when you took off immediately is not an inaccuracy in it's home landing point, but the point at which the Mavic recorded the landing point as you were flying off.
From page 15 of the Mavic Pro manual: "Precision Landing performance is subject to the following conditions: a. Home point is recorded upon take off, and and cannot be refreshed during flight. b. Aircraft must take off vertically. Take off altitude must be greater than 10 meters." If you use the sticks to take off, you need to go up to 10 meters before changing direction. If you use the take-off slider and use Precision Take-off, then it will set the precision point for you. I couldn't find anything where it stated 6 meters, but please point me in the direction if you know where it says that. I, for one will always go straight up at least 50 feet before changing direction just to be sure. Thanks!
This might be a double post, sorry, but it's in the interface as you want to take off, you just have to select the checkbox for Precision Takeoff: bit.ly/2oTOk3D I don't know, maybe it was introduced in a later update after the manual was printed.
Ok, so I found that tonight. It did hover to 6m when I launched it that way. Maybe they say 10 in the manual to be sure you go up high enough when launching manually?
51 Drones - Most likely it was simply an update. I've never flown mine on the original firmware, updated mine immediately after firing it up they first time, so I don't know if that feature has been there since day one. Also, I don't think your second landing when it landed 8-10 feet away from you're marker was an indication of poor return to home accuracy but instead I think that landing spot was simply the area the Mavic was over when it took its landing picture. Of course that's speculation so I might just play around and experiment with it yet. At any rate, keep the good videos coming!
I know this is an old video but I have recently obtained a Mavic Pro and experimented with this. If I am too close to the launch point and not in a similar position when it returns it will often try to key off of me to find the landing point. The other day I was closer to a large tree and it started to land too close to the tree. Thanks for all the videos Russ.
The fly more kit is awsome. Just got the mavic 2 pro last week and I can't believe how incredible the drone is. Sold my mavic pro and am glad I have the 2. If you follow the procedure it comes back no problem. Just like the pro, go to 30 feet as stated. Good video, helped me not crash my pro. Lol
mike Woodward that is what the return to home button is for. I have had similar instances as this and hey we are not exempt from making mistakes bud. That's how we learn. 😊💙

I appreciate the sentiment Mike, and I completely agree with your assessment. However, may I suggest that your presentation could use a bit of fine-tuning. You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
Crashed mine, broke 2 props but I bought the fly more combo so had spares. Crashed it in low light so make sure you fly in good lighting otherwise the sensors mess up. This has taught me something I did not know so thank you for the tips! Agreed, get the combo it's worth the investment! Bag is slightly too small imo but it's fantastic quality.
It was amazing seeing the Mavic get over the landing area before descending and then reorient itself relative to the take-off/landing area. Incredible how it recognizes the area and can determine it's orientation relative to the take-off/landing area. As your experiment showed, the higher altitude is necessary to set the RTH spot as the Mavic needs to take in enough data from the take-off area to get the most precise landing spot. The technology is amazing. Thanks again.
Very useful! I scoured the manuals and watched other videos but did not know this one detail. Fly high enough for the sensors to capture an image of a larger area for safe landing. I spent a week preparing and familiarizing myself with the mavic before It left the ground. Don't rush! It's worth the wait.

When the landing area is small, you always land the drone manually! Don't use the automatic landing mode especially on a moving vehicle such as a boat.

The TRY is a great feature, but no substitute for learni g to land on your own and on RTH you can adjust the landing manually. spare props and batteries are always a good thing. It's also helpful to learn to use the map view to spot your drones orientation especially if you can't see it clearly. ultimately no substitute for lots of stick time. buy a small cheap drone they really help to learn good stick control and they bounce well when you do crash

I wish I'd seen this vid 2 weeks ago. I was in the mountains in California and lifted off from a small sand bar on a river, great video, awesome scenary. When I pushed "return to home" everything was going well until my Mavic got within about 20ft of the ground and I could tell it was way off from the home point. At this point I didn't even know you an cancel RTH so I just held my breath and got as close to the water as I could to fish it out of the drink. Fortunately it landed about 6 feet from the waters edge. I assumed it was a GPS thing, being surrounded by mountains and all, so I manually landed from that point on. Now I know I was just a moron as I remember lifting off up to about 12 feet and then flying up and down the river w/o ever ascending to 30ft. Thanks for the video, you may have saved me from making that same mistake again in the future. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the video and I think these drones are so cool. I am a 63 yr. retired railroad conductor. I am definitely from the old school generation who did not even play video games, so I am all thumbs when it comes to this stuff. So, I just purchased a cheap beginner drone to practice. My ultimate goal is to eventually save up some retirement money and purchase a Mavic Pro and use it with a small tablet. I also have the retiree's eyes.....lol, so that should help. Hopefully, I will become decent enough at flying to graduate to the next level. Thanks for the great video and you are giving this old timer a little hope in achieving this.
I have a Mavic 2 Pro and when I slide to do auto take off it tells me a home location has been detected when just hovering at about 3-4 feet. And the precision landing is phenomenal on this thing. The new technology they’re putting in these things is amazing.

nice video really shows the importance of letting those bottom sensors gather all that data. I recently watched another person's video in Hawaii I want to say and he was kinda upset that the bird didn't come back close to where he launched from. I think this might be his issue.

Good video. I've been flying drones since 2012 and I've only used "return to home" twice and both times it was because too far out and lost control signal. Once back in range, I took control. I'm not suggesting that anyone not use "return to home", I'm just a control freak and I've had too many surprises with some of the "auto" flight modes with drones.
Now I know why I hit a hickory tree branch in my yard yesterday when I hit RTH and it started going off and I tried to take control and it did not respond right. Broke one propeller but I was able to land it okay. Thanks much for the video.

So I managed to buy one recently.I fly very carefully since I have investigated a lot and seen a lot of videos about it. So it wasn't because I am a newbie. I was trying to fly it from one room to another, in the house, and in BEGINNER's mode. I flew very very slowly & carefully, but it suddenly moved towards the open door and hit it. Today when I asked the seller, who is an expert, too, he told me the reason: the door frame is metal, so when it came forward and reached the frame, the sensors mixed up, because of the metal frame, and it moved towards the door. An interference in the waves and sensors!
I just had not thought about such a thing! I wrote it here, for I thought it may be beneficial for someone else, too.
One more thing: I knew it takes a picture to get back home and land later, but I had no idea I must fly it ten meters up, then move to other directions, so that at 10 meters high it takes the picture! I just knew it takes a picture, but had no idea at what height! Thanks a lot for sharing this.
And your area seems to be a suburban area! I loved it! I am in a suburb of Tehran which was a quiet and good place before, but now it has been densely crowded and noisy! Your film reminded me of our place in the past! Good days which are gone!

Awesome information. I've watched tons of videos from other drone users and you're the first to explain that you need to be in the air to set home so that RTH works properly. Everyone sets home place while it's sitting on the ground.

Amazing! Today I stayed un a motel in Reedsport OR on my way to Sacramento. I offered to take aerial shots of the motel because they are new owners. I lifted to about fifteen feet, made a pics, rose another ten feet - another pic and a few more from different angles, And then RTH. I too noticed it was not coming to the spot it departed from and instead of hitting the pause button I moved it toward me as it was about to land in traffic. A bit more panicking and as it was about a foot off the ground I hit the forward toggle and it almost made it up the driveway but skidded for about twenty feet. Your demo was very timely. As I now recall I crashed two other times and upon reflection the reason for those crashes were the same. Now thanks to you I can avoid future crashes./
That's a good video. It's not easy to admit you made a mistake. A lot of little girls who pretend to be men have a problem with that. Also, you figured out what you did wrong and passed it on. I'm glad I watched your lesson. I shall endeavor not to make the same mistake!

I'm a new Mavic owner, having only flown it once. Before I got delivery I downloaded the manual and read it cover to cover and watched dozens of videos. There's so much info I guess it's easy to not remember everything. I didn't remember reading about the 30 meters. This is great information to know. With all of myself gps quads, I typically just go up 10 feet when taking off to be sure everything is ok first. Thanks for this.
I've built up the habit of hand launching and catching it. I got to practice this in the winter as I didn't want the Mavic pro on the ground coz of the snow. I hit the return to home feature but as soon as its within visible range, I take over and do everything by hand.
Jose Ledesma watch them finger tips...chopped mine and got lucky it only took the skin off! Was worried to look at it it hurt so much haha! Seriously, buy a foldable matt or something. Not worth the risk imo. Them props are sharp!!!

Landing manually is actually quite easy. Just practice in open spaces to feel really comfortable before trying to land in a smaller space. And luckily the Mavic is very good at hovering without drifting when in GPS mode.
Also, the Mavic does actually come with 2 sets of spare props just in case of mishap.

After playing with my new drone outside, I wanted to play with it more in my kitchen because it was bitterly cold. Based on the performance outdoors I thought it should be ok. But I tried to land via RTH, and it drifted a few feet and attacked a couple patio blinds haha. I think it could have been GPS drift. There is so much to learn about this Mavic....will take months to learn all the functions.
Good demo. I see so many people complaining that the precision landing isn’t working for them, and they simply haven’t “RTFM”! I read the manual for my Mavic Air 2, and the precision landing has always worked perfectly, within a couple of inches.
Let's push DJI to add voice confirmation that the image for precision landing (that's the feature you show on your video without mentioning it ;) ) is recorded. I found it's not always obviously if it was recorded or not.
I was going to give you the needle for painting an X on your driveway but when you said "go Vikings" I realized you were a righteous dude and far above reproach. Great video by the way.

I bought my Mavic Platinum Flymore a few days ago and absolutely LOVE this thing. How steady it is even in a decent breeze!!!
I'm an old school RC'er: Planes, Jets, EDF's, Cars, Helicopters for the best part of 28 years now. Quads.. well... I should have gone to something much more quality before my confidence in quads/drones was eroded.
I feel my biggest issue, is trust..... I was going from cheap $80-$120USD Quads with cameras to this thing. $100 drones DO NOT handle like this. They suck, especially in breezy conditions. Even though it's a few years old now..The Mavic Pro: it's GOD LIKE compared to toy quads.
Biblical attitude and altitude hold... and even though 85% of my flights are by line of sight, (What I'm used to) I'm really loving the confidence the Mavic Pro is giving me. Really looking forward to trusting that camera and sensor and GPS info I get on my screen.... as scary as it is.. Love it!!

I live in the New England area , my first DJI phantom 4 crashed sustaining heavy damage to shell , camera came off the gymball . I was recording my daughter trough walking trough the woods at about 6 feet off the ground , and 6 feet away , then I increased the altitud to 12 feet flying through trees , depleting the battery juice , suddenly the drone will not respond it started to fly higher , I panic press the return mode on , to have it crashed on to a oak tree branches . One thing to take in consideration is that sensors avoidance mode will not register branches with no leaves .

my mavic platinum did the same.
When the battery critically low it will auto RTH (default setting), thus it climb to RTH altitude.
you still have full control over it.
when it climb by itself, just pull down the throttle and auto RTH will be canceled. (than land it manually)

I usually take off on automatic and let it hover at 3 to 4 feet until it says home point has been updated. Then I fly away. I never had any issue with the return to home. Your accident might have been the un defined take off point (a glass table). Marking the take off point makes it much more accurate for the RTH function to operate. I use a colorful pad marked with the letter H available on line for purchase. Also make sure if you have not physically moved from your location when you took off to hit the RTH that is on the controller and not the RTH on the DJI Go app on the screen. This RTH will bring it back to where the controller is and not where it took off from. This is useful if you have physically moved and want to land the craft next to you. Hope is of help. Fly safe.
I want to say the mavic will hover 4 ft above take off and collect home point. it will say it also. I think if you just take off and start flying then you will have a problem.

1 - I always land manually
2 - I turn off obstacle avoidance.

Great video! I am new too but for what I heard, I think you are pointing the antennas in the wrong direction. They should point towards the sky and not in the way you showed in this video. Good tip! If you dont point up towards the sky then you could loose connection after 1.5 miles. Greetings
Read the manuals it's says when flying in front ,behind,and sides of your self you out the antennas they way you are saying. When it is above you,you out the antennas they way he has.
Return to home won my first crash as well. I was flying very low attitude around my yard with the low battery warning going off. The mavic was only 20’ from me so no biggie. Then return to home took over at 10 percent. The drone tried to ascend to 200’ before returning to home. Unfortunately I was flying under a tree canopy. Hot mess! Instant respect. This thing is not a toy. Don’t get too confident as I did.

Mavic Pro uses GPS like what's in a car or cellphone. The reason for ascending to 33.5 ft or 10 meteres is the downward VPS takes pictures of the ground and records/caches them so that it can return to its take off position and land more accurately. Taking off straight away your skipping that step and purely relying on GPS or a small sample of the ground.
RTH is something that should be used on a long flight or emergency where you can intervene but this is a good idea. As the Mavic more accurately records the take off point. Even a longer hover over the take off point will help.

I think you should try flying it back to the x and landing.
A lot of people say "buy extra props". I say buy prop guards. If you hit an object at high altitude for example.. in most cases it will just bump into the obstacle and not come down falling from the sky. The guards do not interfere in any significantly noticeable way with the way or amount of time it flies

Little bit wrong on the info. It's only 6 meters and the Mavic will do this for you. When you click the take-off button and the Slide to Take-off pops up, there is a little checkbox just above the slider for "Precision Take-off". If you check this box and then slide to take off the Mavic will fly up vertically 6 meters and take a reference picture noted by a small double beep on the controller when it's done so. Your precision landing point is then set. From my experience it lands almost exactly where it takes off when you do this. Every time for me so far.
Also, I think what you're seeing when you took off immediately is not an inaccuracy in it's home landing point, but the point at which the Mavic recorded the landing point as you were flying off.
From page 15 of the Mavic Pro manual:
"Precision Landing performance is subject to the following conditions:
a. Home point is recorded upon take off, and and cannot be refreshed during flight.
b. Aircraft must take off vertically. Take off altitude must be greater than 10 meters."
If you use the sticks to take off, you need to go up to 10 meters before changing direction. If you use the take-off slider and use Precision Take-off, then it will set the precision point for you. I couldn't find anything where it stated 6 meters, but please point me in the direction if you know where it says that. I, for one will always go straight up at least 50 feet before changing direction just to be sure. Thanks!

Ok, so I found that tonight. It did hover to 6m when I launched it that way. Maybe they say 10 in the manual to be sure you go up high enough when launching manually?
51 Drones - Most likely it was simply an update. I've never flown mine on the original firmware, updated mine immediately after firing it up they first time, so I don't know if that feature has been there since day one.
Also, I don't think your second landing when it landed 8-10 feet away from you're marker was an indication of poor return to home accuracy but instead I think that landing spot was simply the area the Mavic was over when it took its landing picture. Of course that's speculation so I might just play around and experiment with it yet.
At any rate, keep the good videos coming!
10 meter hover was (and is) in the manual, prior to the update last month that added precision 6m takeoff with the checkbox.
I know this is an old video but I have recently obtained a Mavic Pro and experimented with this. If I am too close to the launch point and not in a similar position when it returns it will often try to key off of me to find the landing point. The other day I was closer to a large tree and it started to land too close to the tree. Thanks for all the videos Russ.

Crashed mine, broke 2 props but I bought the fly more combo so had spares. Crashed it in low light so make sure you fly in good lighting otherwise the sensors mess up. This has taught me something I did not know so thank you for the tips! Agreed, get the combo it's worth the investment! Bag is slightly too small imo but it's fantastic quality.
It was amazing seeing the Mavic get over the landing area before descending and then reorient itself relative to the take-off/landing area. Incredible how it recognizes the area and can determine it's orientation relative to the take-off/landing area. As your experiment showed, the higher altitude is necessary to set the RTH spot as the Mavic needs to take in enough data from the take-off area to get the most precise landing spot. The technology is amazing. Thanks again.
Very useful! I scoured the manuals and watched other videos but did not know this one detail. Fly high enough for the sensors to capture an image of a larger area for safe landing. I spent a week preparing and familiarizing myself with the mavic before It left the ground. Don't rush! It's worth the wait.

When the landing area is small, you always land the drone manually! Don't use the automatic landing mode especially on a moving vehicle such as a boat.

The TRY is a great feature, but no substitute for learni g to land on your own and on RTH you can adjust the landing manually. spare props and batteries are always a good thing. It's also helpful to learn to use the map view to spot your drones orientation especially if you can't see it clearly. ultimately no substitute for lots of stick time. buy a small cheap drone they really help to learn good stick control and they bounce well when you do crash

I wish I'd seen this vid 2 weeks ago. I was in the mountains in California and lifted off from a small sand bar on a river, great video, awesome scenary. When I pushed "return to home" everything was going well until my Mavic got within about 20ft of the ground and I could tell it was way off from the home point. At this point I didn't even know you an cancel RTH so I just held my breath and got as close to the water as I could to fish it out of the drink. Fortunately it landed about 6 feet from the waters edge. I assumed it was a GPS thing, being surrounded by mountains and all, so I manually landed from that point on. Now I know I was just a moron as I remember lifting off up to about 12 feet and then flying up and down the river w/o ever ascending to 30ft. Thanks for the video, you may have saved me from making that same mistake again in the future. Keep up the good work!

I am definitely from the old school generation who did not even play video games, so I am all thumbs when it comes to this stuff. So, I just purchased a cheap beginner drone to practice. My ultimate goal is to eventually save up some retirement money and purchase a Mavic Pro and use it with a small tablet. I also have the retiree's eyes.....lol, so that should help. I have a Mavic 2 Pro and when I slide to do auto take off it tells me a home location has been detected when just hovering at about 3-4 feet. And the precision landing is phenomenal on this thing. The new technology they’re putting in these things is amazing.

nice video really shows the importance of letting those bottom sensors gather all that data. I recently watched another person's video in Hawaii I want to say and he was kinda upset that the bird didn't come back close to where he launched from. I think this might be his issue.

Make sure the precision landing checkbook is ticked when you take off as well.

Good video. I've been flying drones since 2012 and I've only used "return to home" twice and both times it was because too far out and lost control signal. Once back in range, I took control. I'm not suggesting that anyone not use "return to home", I'm just a control freak and I've had too many surprises with some of the "auto" flight modes with drones.

Now I know why I hit a hickory tree branch in my yard yesterday when I hit RTH and it started going off and I tried to take control and it did not respond right. Broke one propeller but I was able to land it okay. Thanks much for the video.
