I use this mode from my Fenix 5X to "broadcast' using Extended Display Mode to my Edge 130 Head unit on my MTB and RB. It's definitely NOT a Tri-Only feature and offer me the ability to use a single Garmin device for the actual Activity Tracking, but gives me the luxury of seeing the watch stats on the handlebars, vs running both devices in tracking mode with 2 resulting activities results.. My unsolicited .02 in case you wanted to hear it! ~ Peter
Hi Ray, I’ve seen this video a few times but I watched a lot more closely last week as I set up my devices in preparation for my first triathlon. The instructions detailed worked flawlessly and helped me to have a really enjoyable bike leg. Thanks for all your amazing videos.
Watch and monitor still paired? Remember in triathlon when u swim posible the distance between sea and bike is around 500 or 600 meters the quuestiin is if both watch and monitor are paired?
Personally, I just put my EDGE comp into helmet in the bike bag and then attach it to the quarter-turn mount and go out of the transition. When I am out on the course, I just turn the Edge on and it automaticaly is in the Extended Display mode because it return to the same state when it was turned off. So, the Edget starts up and picks up connection with my watch and starts to display whatever is on my watch at that moment. My point is - no need to have it turned on during your swim, you may end up having it stolen by some fast swimming thief
Ha... I was looking at this the other day and was wondering why I would want to use it since I’m only using my bike computer for one segment. Thanks for the video explaining it all!
Have 735XT (for running) and Edge 830 (for cycling). Nice to learn about this feature. Now I just need to learn to swim more than three lengths of a pool.
nice work, thanks. If u go swimming u probably dont take your bike with u in the pool, the connection will be lost to your watch right? When u start biking, does the remote display on your edge resync your swimming activity and continues flawlessly to show data 1:1 as on the watch? edit: after 5 minutes in the videos u explained it clearly ;) thanks
The loss of hill-climb features alone is a reason to keep the Edge in stand-alone mode. I was dissapointed to find that map screens are downgraded to a compass direction indicator only. I'll run my Fenix 7s watch in triathlon mode and the Edge 1080 in standard bike mode for the bike-leg but it's a shame that Garmin can't make this feature work a bit better because it's got great potential.
By editing he date fields on the watch you can have your total bike time on the head device I have my current speed, average speed distance and total bike time, the the 2 fields at the top you can’t change. I use this all the time both in training and in racing. Also an easy way to get heart rate data with a chest strap when cycling!
Not sure if you knew, but since it sounds like you've got a Garmin watch, you can also broadcast your HR directly from your watch to your Edge, without having to even do Extended Display Mode. It's called 'Rebroadcasting', and it within the HR sensor option.
You know one of the interesting things about this, is what you said initially. It really is only useful for triathlon (or duathlon) use. Given that, they could have designed it to be much more useful. For instance, instead of displaying all the metrics for the watch it could be just a page on the head unit (showing total tri time and sport time) and record the bike segment on both the watch and the head unit. That would probably not be much more programming work but would be way more useful, giving you advanced metrics and navigation while still giving you your total race times. Designed by programmers not triathletes! BTW, it’s not like this hasn’t been an issue for like, forever. That was the purpose of the watch handlebar mount back in the day. Why not fix it correctly, it would certainly get Garmin all the serious triathletes (that they don’t have already).
As another thought, rather than a separate page (or in addition) they could have data from the watch show up as configurable data fields on the head unit. Easy peasy.
Great video! Do you happen to know if the 245 can be used for triathlons? As it’s listed in this video. Garmin categorise it as a triathlon watch but I haven’t seen any triathlon mode on it. Cheers
Hello Dc Rainmaker, thks for your videos! one concern is from my watch i send Normalized POwer NP data, NP, NP last lap, for example , the edge 130 or the 130 plus, would show it? since the 130 lack about this metric i dont know if it would show it, thks your help !!!
cyclocross mode is more like it. most races amateurs do the whole event on one bike but anyone who has done a muddy race knows how annoying it can be to pit and either fumble with swapping the head unit or doing a lap with no data. with extended display you record both bikes and don't fumble with trying to swap the head unit in the pit. when you get your A bike back you again have data in front of you.
@@Dcrainmaker most of the pro cyclocross racers just use watches because they swap bikes often but due to the technical nature of cross racing you can't look at a watch display while navigating a course. the data has historically only been useful postrace. with extended display now we can see the data from the watch. being able to see HR and race time is huge for pacing
Another great video. The faults you highlighted, such as climb pro, do you know if this now works with a device like the fenix 6. Just purchased the fenix 6 Pro sapphire after your great reviews and tips.
I presume you're sending HR data to your watch via a chest strap? What are the pros and cons over using the watch's sensor? Does it support the full suite of health tracking features (stress, body battery, etc)?
ive been trying to figure this out forevers with my garmin fenix 5x plus. i was gonna buy a garmin computer as well but didnt cuz i wasnt sure if it could sync! meow i know! thanks a lot man!
Yeah, once in extended display mode it's full takeover time. So basically, you lose out on a lot of Edge-specific features. I'm hoping down the road they'll find ways to make it a bit more mesh-like. Allow things like the map page or elevation charts, etc...
1) Is this over Ant+ ii) I would add another caveat: You need to buy a second device instead of just the bike mount for the watch. c) Are you using the DJI Osmo cams microphones or is that a Coros helmet and you are using the helmet microphone? There is a moment where the sounds hears like under the water
1) It's via ANT+ (using the standard ANT+ Extended Display profile, in fact, one 3rd party even uses it in a similiar way). 2) You do need to buy a second device, but more and more I see triathletes with dedicated bike computers. 2) The audio is come from a lav mic under my jersey. I thought it sounded pretty good throughout, but maybe I missed something.
Is this why Garmin seems to have moved away from quick release kits for their watches? I want a watch to replace my 310xt, but want to put it on my quarter turn mount rather than strapping it to my handlebars, and nothing at the moment seems to offer that option.
I’ve found with my 735xt watch it drops out constantly with my stages power but on my Garmin edge 130 it never has power drops. So because of that I don’t think I’ll be using extended display mode.
This would be a very helpful feature but my powermeter will have power drops when connect to 735xt watch but my garmin edge will get the signal for the full ride.
I tried it. when I came back from the swim the 1040 screen was frozen. Anti climax.... So I suspect u need to be in range when u start the activity. ? And in a triathlon the swim start and the T1 can be far from each other. (Watch epix gen 2)
Many years late on this, but I have a few lessons. If I want things like Cadence & Power displayed, I should pair those with the watch then, correct? Also, if I wanted to see HR from my watch, would this mode be the best (even if it's not a triathlon)?
Does the lap button work on the Edge unit to enter T2? I typically like to hit my lap button immediately before dismounting. Can I do that on the bike computer or still do it on the watch?
Both are solid. I often use a FR945, but for cycling I somewhat prefer a dedicated bike computer on my handlebars, rather than having to twist my wrist. But that's just personal preference.
Interesting idea but not worth the bother. It’s more fun to spend time during the 5 hour bike leg doing math in my head about how fast I am going to need to run based on my swim split plus my bike split!
Hey folks - thanks watch (again...as it may be). Here's the full post as well with a ton of FAQ type things I've been adding to: dcra.in/TriDisplay

Great vid. I like how you got into full Triathlete mode by putting glasses arms under helmet straps 😉

AKA secret cyclocross mode so you can have a headunit on your pit bike and one on your race bike but record from your watch!
Doing my first triathlon this week - this really helped, didn't know my 735xt could link up to my 520 plus, so thanks!!

Thanks for the video. I wonder if you can see navigations and maps on Edge in this mode?
No, you just get the one page. It’s pretty lame, in my opinion.
Hey, great video, I use this feature on my mtb-rides, but.....does this work also together with the handlebar remote control?
What is the aero mount for your bike computer called and where do I get one? Great video Thx
Great video! Do you happen to know if the 245 can be used for triathlons? As it’s listed in this video. Garmin categorise it as a triathlon watch but I haven’t seen any triathlon mode on it. Cheers
Looks like F245 can be used for EXTENDED DISPLAY mode but with single activities, as no multisport mode in it.

Enjoy!

Why did the geese cross the road? Because whaoo still hadn't sorted their routing out properly

What are you using to mount the garmin computer to your areo bars?
Huge help!! Thank you!
The glare on that head unit is outrageous,
Cameras always make glare look really tough. It’s generally the bane of my TH-cam existence.
Real life though? No issue with glare.
It's a useful feature if you've got a watch which calculates the Training Effect and a bike computer which doesn't
Love this! Well made and works great!!
Can you select which data fields show? For example, i don't want to see lap time.
I presume you're sending HR data to your watch via a chest strap? What are the pros and cons over using the watch's sensor? Does it support the full suite of health tracking features (stress, body battery, etc)?

Hi, great video. I wanna make a question: what is the name of the garmin edge mount on your bike? Share the link, please?
Hi! Is there a way to send suggested workouts from FR955 to Edge830? I can't find anything on this.....
ive not been able to add elevation chart field on my edge130 using extended mode or any maps or navigation. which is a bunmer

Slightly off topic question: how comfortable have you found the Marq to wear? It's a big watch.
I’ve gotten used to it over the past few months. Though once I’ve got my review done, I’m back to my FR945.
@@Dcrainmaker I would imagine the 945 is much more comfortable to wear
Definitely for my wrists.
Do you like the marq ? Do you think next gen fenix/945 will have less bezel and more screen?
Since Marq Athlete is available to public now, should we expect a review soon?
Yup.

Will it work on the Descent Mk1
Which garmin it is 935/945?
Interesting. But I don't want to bother with 2 devices at triathlon. I just rotate my watch so I can read it while using the airobars.
Why won’t this work on my Fenix 3HR?
This is awesome! What is your favorite watch/bike computer combo for triathlon?
I prefer the Garmin FR935 or FR945, and then an Edge 530 or Edge 830.
Nothing wrong with duathletes lol
Nope, not at all! :)
Long course duathlon is so much better though. Powerman duathlon! Check it out! 😜
It doesn’t mirror it exactly. I can get my power meter to show on the edge a lot of sensors not on the edge that I have configured on the watch :(
Very nice
Sick. I’ll drop a like for that.
The audio. ☹️
Interesting idea but not worth the bother. It’s more fun to spend time during the 5 hour bike leg doing math in my head about how fast I am going to need to run based on my swim split plus my bike split!
Duathlon = how to ruin a perfectly good bike ride every time 🤷🏻♂️
Why can't I just use my phone as an extended display?
Very nice.
