When I was active duty (87-94) we loved the A-10. Got to see it in action. Awesome aircraft. It’s papa, the A-1 Skyraider would still be effective today I think.
As a Vietnam era Spectre(AC-130H) driver, I would expect the Special Forces guys on the ground to love to have the A-10s overhead during the day and an AC-130J overhead at night. Love that 105mm!
Ghostrider Don here; Nate rundown on CAS as an Aviation guy you nailed it. This October at the Special Operations Association Reunion we are going to be briefed by a member who is a OIF OEF veteran of the 20th. SOS and 4th. SOS Ghostriders. Of course the 4th. have the C-130 J Spectures. He also may hook you up with the crews that supported you. Great job.
As a Recon Marine turned Apache Driver I was a little disappointed we didn’t get better marks from you but I understand. Nothing is scrutinized more than the Apache as everything is recorded and viewed by non pilots including lawyers and politicians. The other aircraft don’t have that stuff to deal with and investigations wind up being he said she said. The aircraft you dealt with were D models. We have E models now. Many improvements including station time and Day TV. I must remind you that your assertion comes from GWOT, not Near-Peer. The A-10 is going away and the AC-130 can’t operate in the radar environment. The Apache can. We can fly lower to avoid radar. Good video and I wish you luck with the channel. DOL
I retired in 2011 but in my time downrange (3 deployments to Iraq) we supported tons of SF troops. Unfortunately, I think with 64s (at least back then) every Battalion had its own way of doing things, and given the varying experience levels of crews and the way they were trained at that time, it doesn't surprise me that some might be reluctant to fire "danger close". To be honest, if there was more constructive feedback from supported units like this...some of the complaints might actually be addressed. Everyone I know wanted to do the job and support the ground units to the best of their ability.
Pylon turn…that’s the word you’re looking for to describe the AC-130s orbit over the target. A constant left hand turn that keeps those guns trained on target. Gotta love the gunships…you can run, but you’ll only die tired!
Just added perspective. I’m a former F-16 driver, and in Desert Storm/Shield I was an ALO, FAC, Air Liaison Officer with 2/101. Worked a bit with the Rangers, 5th Group there at Ft Campbell and the Task Force. What you would call now a JTAC. Don’t disagree with much. But the big difference in an F-16, and A-10, is training. 15 and 16 guys get far less CAS training than the A-10 guys do. CAS is a very intensive mission that takes a good bit of brain bites all as you are flying your jet, assessing the battlefield, watching out for threats to you. It really takes a lot of practice. I mean I’d equate it to perhaps CQB as a reference as far as practice and training for good result. Here’s the problem in the future. We’ve not faced a peer to peer threat since maybe 1953? That A-10, and that AC-130 just aren’t going to be around for the first part of what ever we get into. They wouldn’t survive. So you’re going to need F-35s, F-22s, F-15, 16, 18s. Those Marine F-18s are going to be better at it, they practice more. Just this Desert Storm FAC F-16 guys 2 cents, which probably isn’t worth a penny today. 😂
Great video! As someone who flew on AC-130H and AC-130W I would rate your knowledge a 9 out of 10. The small gaps in info are just not publicized due to OPSEC.
Awesome video Brother! I remember having the Cobra and Harriers in the first Gulf war. All are aircraft are devastating to our enemies. Thank God they are on our side. Have a great night Brother!
I argue that nothing beats attack helicopters in close air support. A platform that hovers, quite accurate with its chain gun, and has lots of ammunition. Has two pilots, which allows them to consult with each other. The fact that AH hovers and has constant target retention, it can be asked for a more precise real-time orders. For example, there are apartment buildings, in one building there are friendlies who ask for danger close air support, and in the other apartment building there are insurgents. AH can perform a burst outside of the building he thinks the insurgents are in(based on what troops on the ground described), and receive an immediate response from the troops on the ground. An excellent way to prevent friendly fire.
My background is civilian aviation but, the military has far more interesting machines than much of the tin I’ve worked on. Awesome shirt 😂 Thanks for another great video.
I think this video will blow up with some time its really interesting. Tilt (John Meyer) from SOG told a crazy story on a podcast about him bringing in fire from an AC 130 5 yards in front of his position lol he said because it was night time so every time it fired you could see a flash of its outline in the clouds, like a ghost just orbiting the battlefield. Intense af lol
"Can't use the AC-130 into an area where there's enemy SAMS". Unless you're an idiot named Gen Horner trying to kiss Schwarzkopf' s butt and you send one on a daylight mission at 1500 feet and get it shot out of the sky. "Spirit 03". Had a friend on that bird.
The crew was asked to RTB as the sun came up. They chose to stay and defend the Marines that absolutely needed them. They knew the risk and still chose to stay making the ultimate sacrifice. Pretty sure my gunship crew mates would have done the exact same thing.
Spirit 03 unanimously chose to stay on station to protect the ground troops, and we extensively used Spectres to hunt SAMs in Vietnam Desert Storm and recently in Syria.
Sweet breakdown video. I think what I'm hearing is Army Air Corp, clipper wings, strategic bombers, bombing the shit out of it at the right spots. Oh and Army
Saw an F-16 turn a barricaded shooter into a crispy critter in a Second story building one night, I believe they used it because they have a much longer loiter time, because of the weather and how far we were out, in the Hindu Kush, maybe? I dunno, anyways it was badass Fun fact about the the 105’s on the Ac130, they have to commonly source parts out of museums because the guns are so archaic, to make repairs
