In today's video, I give you my top 3 Reasons Why You Get Beat on Defense! These simple basketball defensive techniques are super easy to implement for players at every level. By implementing these defensive techniques into your game you can almost immediately skyrocket your overall basketball skill level!
My first reason why people get beat on defense is what I call "oversliding" most basketball coaches teach players from a young age that sliding defensively is the only way to keep your guy in front of you. However, over the years have figured out that the athleticism in basketball requires defenders to be much more versatile when guarding. Think of guys like Paul George who is one of the elite defenders in the NBA he is so good at not only sliding but all at sprinting to recover if he ever is out of the play. Defense is a 90% about effort and about 10% how athletic a player is. Think of a guy like Patrick Beverly he is a super undersized guard in the NBA but is well known as one of the best defenders in the league and even takes on defensive assignments like Lebron James and Kevin Durant at times. The competitive fire he plays with is something that has made him into an elite defender! So if you want to really skyrocket your lockdown defense you absolutely need to implement becoming a more versatile player into your game today!
My second reason why players get beat on defense is that they follow the basketball. This is something that coaches hate and will get players benched almost immediately. When it comes to basketball and playing elite-level defense it's incredibly important to see man and the ball at the same time. The way elite players do this is by dropping in help side and understanding positioning on the floor. I breakdown the best positioning to use your peripheral vision so you are never caught out of position. If we look at a guy like Kawhii Leonard he is an elite defender in the NBA and a big reason why he is so good on that side of the ball is that he understands where he needs to be at all times on the floor! So if you are serious about really becoming a great defender on the court you MUST understand that following the basketball will get you beat!
My third Reasons Why You Get Beat on Defense is because they have a low basketball IQ. In basketball just like any other sport it's super important to watch film and really understand what your opponent likes to do. The best defenders know who they are playing and what moves they tend to do on offense. Having the IQ to put in the time and understand what your opponent is trying to do is so important. Most basketball players think that they can just show up and play great defense but in reality, it takes a lot of things to come together to make a player or a team great on the defensive end of the floor. If you are ready to really skyrocket your defense these basketball defensive techniques are essential! Make sure to implement these moves into your basketball workouts today!
As always make sure you are paying close attention to these basketball defensive tips so when the time comes you can really expand your game to the next level! Watch the video all the way through and implement these scoring tips into your game today!

Great vid!! The only downside of cutting off the ball handler is that if you're not careful, a good handler will stop on a dime or change direction and drop you. When you slide your feet your body is optimally balanced. It's not impossible, many NBA players do it very well such as Avery Bradley and Stanley Johnson.

As a youth coach... when I notice the other team has a very strong driver... I get my defender to shut down his right side and open up the left side drive. 8/10 times, the best drives have weak left sided drives and are easier to strip or will likely dish it away. Same goes for taking a charge... a lot of players are heads-down bull drivers... get to the lane early and take the charge and shut it down.

Is it possible to consistently steal the ball from an offensive scorer right as he is driving? And really tip the ball off his hands instead of just trying to make him miss his shot?

Mixed here and also 5,8 freshman.
I have a long wingspan so I get easy tips.
If you have short arms stay in reach but don't be to close. My brother has shorter arms than me but he is stronger so he is physical but he is fast so he basically whips me sometimes.
But footwork and movement is your best friend. Look at how they dribble and find out there favorite moves.
Then look at there hips and eyes and then predict there next move.
Tbh I rather not foul but if it's to prevent a basket in a close game foul.
I'm not the best defender in the world but incredible defense is supposed to prevent buckets

I remember in high school, I was a good defender and thought that would never change...went to JUCO College and it turns out, the people I was guarding in high school especially as a senior, were just not good at basketball and did predictable stuff like dribbling too much and what not...Im in JUCO and its people that are just as fast as me, I was actually really fast in high school as well like faster than A LOT of people lol...but when i got to college holy shit it REALLY felt like I was the worst defender...I got tired so easily it was unbelievable I never been so tired before...im still trying to improve on defense til this day and my coach makes us slide as well and he makes us do this 1v1 close out drill and we cant let them get in the lane or to the middle which is hard like that sliding stuff made me so vulnerable to fakes and now its even harder to react to jabs and stuff...so now i just look at their chest now, my teammate also told me about angles and stuff

Let’s clarify, sliding for practice is still insanely important, it helps with explosiveness out of your step. And if you are good enough and predictive, you can cut them off and potentially draw a charge. Being able to turn the legs and take strides is also important, but side jumps/slides are still important to develop skills

When I play in an unfamillar gym this is what I do
I give my man space to take the shot when he first recieves the ball. Most of the time what he'll do is:
    1. Confidently takes the shot. Stick to these guys cause they'll keep shooting the ball when open. Most of the time these guys can't drive by good defense
    2. Looks for an open man to pass. If there are none he'll either take the shot or create a play. This guys are hard to guard cause you don't know if they can shoot or only drive until later in game so you can't shut them down early.
    3. Immediatley tries to drive by you. You don't need to worry if you leave this guys open far from the basket since they won't be draining thier shots just keep them away from the basket and you're good.

Also, if you're guarding the ball against a player who can dribble, shoot, finish, and pass, if you can find a way to also be aware of the other 8 players on the court, that's a plus. Good players know how to attack the gaps in the defense, so if you keep your player away from the gaps and in the vicinity of other players, build a wall around him using the out of bounds, position of other players, and even more helpful if you know his favorite spots to keep him out of. This is how great defenses keep the James Hardens, the Damien Lillards, the Paul George's in check. No player is unstoppable

@@walterwhite4969 do you know the phrase “all is fair in love and war”? Well I would like to add basketball to that list. Try and think outside of the box when guarding players that have a certain power over you. Utilize your environment, your teammates, don’t let him get to his spot. Use your speed to get around him and steal the ball. Pull the chair on him. Make him shoot a left handed layup because you know he never makes those. Foul him, even better if you can foul him without getting a call. You never lose until you say there’s nothing you can do about it

@@walterwhite4969 I’m a generally big dude, but coach would have me guard bigger dudes that had at least 3 inches and 30 pounds on me. One thing I did what worked is I would literally elbow and poke him and he would get frustrated and exert more effort in the play, and so by the time he even got the ball he was exhausted and would rush to try and score and would fail. But now I realised, find those gaps then move them further away from the goal then score. I only did this once. But I didn't even use that as an advantage so now I will use these new strategies and win.

    1. If you see them start running, instantly step back to give you a clean open shot while simultaneously making him look dumbfounded
    2. He’s tryna see the man and the ball? Nah f that. Turn him into a football route and juke him out.
    3. Play like you’re playing Rock Paper Scissors . Switch up your dribbling and tactics, movements, everything. If you’re feeling risky, do the same move/dribble and try to predict when they’re predicting you. Always be a step ahead if you’re doing this, like, again, Rock Paper Scissors. You don’t slide your feet standing up high, your supposed to get lower then the person with the ball. You’re supposed direct the offensive player where you want them to go.

I get told that I naturally look mad all the time, so when I play defense I be staring into they soul, talking shit and trying to throw their game off. Also being an off ball pest is good if your gaurding a good player to make sure they don’t get the ball at all

Swear this is me. I can play offense to but my teammates barely pass me the ball until like 75 percent of the game is nearly done.
Like nah I'm good imma just stick to my job and guard there best dude so they can't score.
That's the thing sometimes they think defense is ass when in reality that really the easiest part of the game and best as you get the ball and build a lead

    1.Turn, Run, Cut Off Method
-Helps get back on defense and back to defensive sliding after getting beat
    2. See man and ball
-Don't ball watch, do your job of guarding your man while going into help (still watching your man) when your man is inactive to the play.
    3. Know your players weaknesses and strengths.
-Know the moves and shots they like doing, and maximize defense in those areas.
-Most players are 1 dimensional so they only have 1 or 2 moves they always use.

People now do not understand, you have to use your peripheral vision too. See your man, see the ball. Don't focus on your man, focus on the center(between your man and the ball). If your man moves, you beat him to the spot to disrupt him from whatever he's planning. That's just defense 101 off ball. 1 on 1, you try to explore your man to find his weakness, is he explosive to his right side or left side, close that door or you can make him think he can dribble on his right then beat him to position, make him dribble to his left, you can easily... Eaaaaasily steal that ball once you clip that right arm. If you're going to face a youtuber/wannabe and1, use the jordan defense, 1 hand free movement, 1 hand between the legs. Clipping them pisses them off alot, like seriously they would throw that ball to your head but make sure you if it's your turn, baseball pitch it to his face right after he does it. 😂😂😂

There's this tall guy that I really want to block but can't. Then I noticed that he always hold the ball low when he's driving to the bucket. So Instead of trying to block him from above, I'll just smack the ball from his hands before he can bring it up
