Victor Carrillo they are all actually dying... Slowly deteriorating away. These Family members are probably in the earlier, less weaken state. Matthias may have chosen these individuals to go ambush and kill him when he arrives back to his personal fortress. It seems they wanted to corral him with the fire instead of just simply dousing him with the flammable liquid. Not a ready good tactic, as he repelled and dispatches them winningly.
Why does Neville even have to return home? He could duck in anywhere, it's a big city, The Family would never find him. Maybe he just wants to protect his art collection.

His house is fortified and has weapons for him to defend himself. Plus it’s his home turf so he’s more confortable there. If he’s out in the city, you never know if he accidentally runs into a nest of family members wherever he decides to hole up. There’s just too much of a risk and potential disadvantage. Better to risk going home.
Had he not made it back, there would be no lights to protect his home. Matthias and the Family would have gotten in and then Neville's home would be destroyed. Remember, it was his home before it all began (as he told Dutch when asked why he stayed there).
You run into this same scenario when it starts getting dark in Minecraft. You can dig yourself a hole for the night (or a tower), but you almost always just run back to your base.
You know, I think I'm going to get a couple more CO2 extinguishers....one for each trunk and a couple for my house and garage. Might even go for a floorboard mount in the cars.

Awful soundtrack that's dated terribly. Sounds like a lousy tv disaster movie. Love the idea for the film, just wish it had been done with more forethought about the future. Thanks for the upload. Still fun to watch.
