With everything country music radio and conservatives did to the chicks after their comment this is the best response they could have made. It was an amazing F you to those that treated them poorly for just voicing their opinion. It became one of their best selling songs ever, won 3 Grammies and was listed as one of the top 100 most influential songs of the decade.
Can't speak for all Americans but when Natalie said what she said this Veteran wanted to bitch slap her. NOT because she voiced her opinion but that she didn't have the balls to do it in the USA, she went to another country to spew her stuff which frankly no one gave a rip about. I don't get where these stars think everyone else should care about their opinion, Lord knows Natalie sure didn't consult with this veteran.
@@HenrietteHolder Why should she have to consult with you? WTH are you to dictate to her about what she can and can't say? Who are you to say what people in the UK care about. My favorite song from them, swept the Grammy awards for this song and album and I definitely support them, they stood their ground and basically told the haters to go to hell
Great reaction and great song! There are some comments already about the song but if you want to know more about what happened at the time especially with The Chicks check out the documentary that they did called ‘’Shut Up and Sing’’. It shows everything they went through from the time they were in London until making the album ‘Taking The Long Way’ and releasing it. It was quite a journey to say the least.
Shut up and Sing is such a powerful documentary and made me love Natalie Maines even more. "Now that we've f*cked ourselves, I think we have a responsibility to keep f*cking ourselves." Integrity is courageous. And it underscored the groteseuqe hypocrisy of right wing politics. The people who scream "cancal culture" now refused to play Dixie Chicks on the radio, ran promotions running over their CDs with steamrollers, etc. Their crime? Natalie Maines was opposed to the invasion of Iraq and said "We are ashamed that George Bush is from our home state of Texas."
Love the Chicks and they had every right to be mad! They were vilified, and they were right about what they said imo! They have a ton of great songs. Worth diving into.
I love the Chicks. I had the privilege of seeing them in person before they made it big and have been a huge fan of theirs ever since. One of my favorite songs of theirs is Traveling Soldier. PS, I also did not consider GWB my president.
Their voices and music are amazing! Seeing them live, it's just as perfect. You might like their cover of, "Landslide," (Fleetwood Mac) and if you want a bit of lighthearted fun filled with the fiddle music, give "Sin Wagon" a try. If you want another serious, impactful one, give, "March, March" a listen - it needs to be the video, though. It was written after the death of George Floyd (an unarmed Black man killed by police while in their custody that sparked demonstrations and protests all over the US in 2020) and addresses discrimination of all kinds. It's a controversial one, though, so if you decide to air it, just understand you may be stepping into some unpleasant comments. Watch it for yourself, if nothing else. It is full of passion and emotion.
Your comment isn't exactly accurate! While g.f. did die in police 🚔 custody, he overdosed on the drugs he swallowed after making contact with the police for trying to use a counterfeit $20.00! He died because he didn't want to face ANOTHER drug charge and going back to jail, or prison AGAIN, for the umpteenth time! ..from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 👋 🤠
Probably one of my favs of theirs easy. Not sure why folks think this was about Toby, the Dixie Chicks got "canceled" and their lives torn apart after Natalie made a remark about President Bush. Back in the day, a simple stupid remark about, say a President, could ruin your career and life...being it specific to "Texas" didn't help. Now days, you can hell be a big star and compare the "President to Hitler" and barely get a side glance...oh yeah if your Hank Jr. What these women and their families were put through was so over the top insanely ridiculous. Lots of great other tracks of theirs you should check out.

But when you realise why they made this song you will understand what it's all about & now they are called The Chicks you will love them more & more & also make sure you have a listen to Natalie Maines other albums which are just what the lady is all about too..
They became 'The Chicks' because the controversy the derailed their career. They were at a concert in London and Natalie made the statement that she was ashamed that she was from the same state as President Bush in 2003. It created a wildfire that instantly went out of control. Radio stations stopped playing their music, concert sales went down, people burned and crushed CDs on the news. They received vile fan mail. It was not as much what she said but the fact that it was outside of the country. At least for people that I knew that were upset about it. I think it was uncalled for because ahe has a right to her opinion as does everyone else. However at the same time i believe she said in a concert outside of the US for a reason. She knew the response she would get in the US would have been for the most part negative if for no other reason than this was less than 2 years after 911. She thought doing it in another country she would get more support. I don't think they expected it to make big news on this side of the pond. Like i said before it was ridiculous that it went so stupidly nuts either way.
That is not why they changed their name to The Chicks. They took Dixie out during the conversations about the systemic racism that exists in the US and it’s roots, imagery, all of that that was sparked after the murder of George Floyd in 2020
I'd just like to set the record straight. They did not go overseas simply to criticize Bush. The Dixie Chicks were on a European concert trip, and our impending invasion and war with Iraq was on everyone's mind. She spoke her mind on the eve of the invasion. It was an unplanned, off the cuff remark.
That's not why they became "The Chicks." They'd reclaimed their trajectory at that point. The name change was a more recent decision based on not wanting to be associated with "whistlin' Dixie" after the murder of George Floyd.
Dropping Dixie from the name had nothing to do with the ridiculous response to her innocuous statement about Bush. It's part of acknowledging the inherent racism historically associated with it.
Everyone is going to talk about the chick's and toby fight. A side note George strait was asked about his political view on everything happening at the time. He basically said that he is a performer and not going to give his opinion on the subject
The gals were in Europe & made the mistake of saying they were ashamed George Bush was from their state of Texas, because of the mess in Afghanistan. Country fans flipped out that they criticized the President, while in another country. Radio stations stopped playing their music etc. They were basically blacklisted for a few years. This was their comeback song. They still have many fans, like me, but many other people are still ticked at them.
Given that pretty much every single Texan has gone to Trump style pacifism and is against most any war imaginable the Chicks have actually been proven right by history so why is she still mad? Bush Cheney policies do not sell anywhere in the Lone Star State.
