- Harry Belafonte & Petula Clark - On The Path of Glory, excerpt from "Petula" (1968).
During this historic performance, Petula Clark held onto Harry Belafonte's arm. However, the director requested them to redo the scene by standing apart after a representative from the sponsor witnessed the original take and demanded it to be reshot due to concerns that showing a white woman touching a black man could negatively impact car sales in the South, where the company sold cars. Clark and her husband, Claude Wolff, the show's executive producer, were outraged by this request and instructed the director to erase all the retakes except for the original one, ensuring that it would be the only version broadcast.

In spite of protests from producers and some viewers, the "touching scene" went forward between Harry and Petula. Furthermore, they collaborated on a good song. This in spite of the mood of America in 1968. Thank you for presenting.
To think harry carries everyone's gene.
@@josephaaron8435 huh?
@@calisongbird Go read about him and come tell me.
@@josephaaron8435 no, you made the statement, so the burden is on you to explain it and cite your sources. I do know about him, and have no idea wtf you’re talking about.
@@calisongbird put it to rest then. I'm not finna give you education on a platter of gold being that you are so disrespectful. A fool somewhat.
Wow what an absolutely perfect piece of television, the performing, the directing, the singing. I love the way their voices weave together.
Belafonte WAS a major SUPERSTAR
Civil rights icon
Just lived a rightous life. His Live at Carnegie Hall is a magnificent album; AND Him and Lena Horne on the album Porgy and Bess 1960 is a pure classic on RCA Victorrrr!
Petula Clark is magnificent!
Petula Clark is pretty but Harry Belafonte is simply beautiful.
Beautiful outside, beautiful inside!!!
Can't believe this was filmed almost 60 years ago.
PETULA CLARK is way, way,WAY more than just pretty.
She is STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL.
She is also extremely good hearted and friendly.
And as for her voice?
Second to none.
She's more than just pretty.
Such a classy lady, Petula. A wonderful man Harry❤Rip🌹
A nice song.

Yessssss life is the greatest freewill gift we could ever have 💌🙏😊
I think this is the performance where when she touched his arm, the producers went crazy and stopped filming. They insisted that a white woman shouldn't be allowed to touch a black man on TV. Petunia's opinion prevailed and the performance was filmed with the touch. There was no backlash from the public.
Petula and her husband were determined to have this aired on TV uncut and so they went and destroyed all the other tapes so this footage would have to be used.
@@carolinewiggins2803 Great ! I am glad to hear a fuller story.
@@TranquiloTrev That information is all in the description box under the video
@@calisongbird Yes it is. I did not see it at the time.
@@carolinewiggins2803 that’s not quite the actual story…. It was her lawyer, who was also executive producer of the show, who insisted the original take be aired. There’s a short interview clip with her here on TH-cam telling the story.
Beautiful! Thank you so much! ❤❤😊
May Harry RIP. The same people who are celebrating his death, are the same people who are offended by this.
Grandioso Harry Belafonte.
Thank you so much ❤❤❤big love

Thank you very much.

Great stuff.
Her husband and lawyer had the other copies destroyed, so that only this version survived.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned or inquired of any ailments that had spawned from this televised duet touching.

15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures

I remember back in 1990 there was controversy over a magazine cover that featured Jamie Lee Curtis sitting on the shoulders of a black professional football player. I don’t remember the magazine’s or football player’s names.
Why was such a fuss made over this simple and innocent physical contact in 1968, but Judy Garland and Sammy Davis Jr held hands on his TV show in 1966? Did anyone object to that? I can't find any reference to it.
Andy Williams and Lena Horne also held hands on his TV show in 1966.
3 or 4 years before The Beatles had refused to perform to segregrated audiences and 2nd time over put it in their contract. Pet and the Fabs that is being British.
too think this gave half of the country a nervous breakdown ? Yikes !
Que ano?
