It was her lawyer Pete Pryor who took a stand on this, not her.

My goodness I knew who Petula Clark was since 6th grade but honestly I don't recall knowing who Harry Belafonte was anyway I grew up at a time when a Black and White TV in your home meant something so everyone was or were Black or White. Beautiful song.

Everyone here is praising Petula for her bravery. How about praising the actual person responsible for taking a stand and insisting the original version be aired. Her lawyer Pete Pryor.

And much respect to Petula’s lawyer - he was the one who actually took a stand and insisted the original clip be aired. Give credit where it’s due.

@@calisongbird - The lawyer works for THE HUSBAND. Petula Clark is the wife of THE HUSBAND, not the lawyer. The lawyer is only doing what the husband insists. Its the husband who has the only say on whether or not Petula touching Harry was offensive. The husband insisting the lawyer take legal action is the real driving force here. If the husband shared the sponsor's attitude, this would have been a different story for sure.

It's laughable that the sponsor freaked out about seeing a little white lady touching the hand of a large black man. If that sponsor was alive today and browsed the internet, he'd have a stroke!

There is a poignancy to the coincidence of his death coming so soon after the 55th anniversary of that special. NBC needs to re-run it in its entirety. I know it is available on VHS and DVD, but still, it’s TV history. It should be on TV again.

I have always loved Petula from high school days even though heavy metal and acid rock were fast taking over in my generations. And I have long loved Harry Belafonte. I still do. Both of them, for their good character and their songs.

Glad to find this. There was actually a taped part of the show which was before an audience. I was there. Harry Belafonte was not there. Petula sang several songs. One was done twice as she complained she could not hear the orchestra well enough. At the end of the taping she thanked Harry Belafonte for being part of the program. However he was not there on such date. Wish
Harry had been there for the portion I witnessed. We were part of a group of UCLA students which had been invited.

This is absolutely fascinating, because there is also an interview about this with Steve Binder, the producer she mentions, and HIS version is that it was the first couple of takes that had them standing apart and it just wasn't working, and then HE came up with the idea of her coming down and standing next to Belafonte.
It's weird that she says Binder was a "great guy," but then sort of paints him as the bad guy who was so uncomfortable that he tried to reshoot the number. But in Binder's version, it was the sponsor who objected and he was horrified by it. He also talks how racist one of the executives on the sponsor's team was, and how he had to fight to get Belafonte on the show at all.
